  • When building with bamboo, there are a few methods you can use to secure joints. Bamboo pegs, Nuts and bolts and lashing are the most common ways to join bamboo together.
    We also go into how to fasten two pieces of load bearing bamboo with bolts.

    Thanks for the video. Just a couple comments I have... when Drilling through, you could drill backwards thru the exit hole and Reem it out a bit more so that you get no fiber ripping when passing the rod through. Also it can be easier sometimes if you happen to have a long thin drill bit that you can use to pre-drill. Also, a couple months after construction you may have to revisit those bolts and snug up the nuts again as the bamboo will slowly shrink in diameter. Aloha amigo!

      Definitely, Ideally you're building with dry bamboo, but everything you said was spot on, I could have better drilling practices, my eye for detail needs work.

    For lashing try "bank line" (I use #36 twisted tarred Catahoula brand). It's cheaper than paracord, plenty strong for the purpose, and doesn't stretch as much. Thanks for putting out more videos! My wife and I love watching.

    If you grow some bambusa textiles. Cut the bamboo split it hammer it soak it 48 hrs then wrap your bamboo fram joints with it. It will dry and never loosen. Much better than paracord or hemp twine.
    Thanks: Miami Bill

    This was very informative. I've been thinking about how to build bamboo fencing and thinking about techniques for joining is very helpful. I'd be interested to know (or see a video) of adding some kind of organic/natural coating on the outside of bamboo to increase longevity. Thank you!

    What about lashing it with wire? I see some channels from Vietnam doing that on their bamboo structures. Some drill the bamboo and string the wire through it for extra security.

    Instead of tightening the nut to near crush-point, would be be a good idea to use an extra nut at each end of the threaded bar as locknuts?

    Hi,
    Interesting video… I wondered if cable ties could be of any ‘alternative’ use in the whole proces of connecting bamboo…

  • @justinw1765
    @justinw1765 Před rokem

    I live in a colder climate. What do you think about a simple, log style cabin made out of large diameter bamboo (obviously the void areas would be filled with some kind of insulation)?
    Heck, if you could find something to seal the outside of the bamboo really well (to be air and water impermeable) you probably could pull a weak vacuum on it and get like 97% of the air out and make it super insulating. And then you would only have to worry about insulating the areas in between where the bamboo touches (the kind of U/V shaped areas where obviously there won't be much insulation). Could be done with fiberglass, expanding foam, foam sheets, etc.
    Actually, thinking about it some, you would have to be careful doing this, because between the atmospheric pressure and the weight of the bamboo on top of the bottom pieces, it would be likely to break. You would probably have to do like at least 1/4 to 1/2 of the bottom of the bamboo wall with bamboo that has expanded foam inside of it, and then the rest with the weak vacuum. It might just be too much faff all in all. I know how to make vacuum insulated panels for cheap, so I would probably just line the inner wall with these, and use expanded foam in the poles themselves (this should strengthen them against crushing. Heck, you could alternate with every other pole with expanded foam, and then put cellulose insulation, kapok fiber, or what not in the other ones).

    Would it be ok to notch out both bamboo poles making them fit into each other before lashing them together or would it make it weaker ?

  • @acatisfinetoo6921

    But you mentioned about the bolt breaking the bamboo, so will not break eventually when you start to add weight?

    • @HomesteadinHawaii
      @HomesteadinHawaii  Před rokem

      It depends on what the bolt is doing. I donʻt try and use bolts to hold all of the weight, thatʻs the bamboo job. Bolts just keep it together.

    Can you use young, soft, just cut bamboo to bend it to the shape you want?

    • @HomesteadinHawaii
      @HomesteadinHawaii  Před 2 lety

      No. You bend bamboo with either heat and a bender, by making relief cuts or by using a bunch of splits bounded together. All from well aged bamboo

    Instead of concrete- node- void fill, please try construction adhesive expanding foam injected through a tiny hole. And please do a follow up video of your experience. I have not tried it myself but I think it would work because it will create great added structural integrity of the “longitudinal” fibersThank you BUT! Too much foam could cause an explosion from inside out? And I guess concrete could do the same
