Everytime I hear and see Katherine Ciesinski, whether it be Bach or Barber, her musical soul, ever-true, peers into the stillness of eternity.

This is very beautiful indeed and yes I hear shades of the late, great Rosalind Elias whose Erika on disc is a stunner. Miss Elias (as Erika) was chosen by Byng for the premiere of VANESSA
at the MET in 1958 and she deserved that honour. After Callas refused the role of Vanessa, it went to the versatile Eleanor Steber who was as splendid as splendid can be as you can hear on the marvellous recording. Maria's excuse for not taking the role was that she hated to sing in English but I think she was simply unwilling to try a first time opera composer even if it was BARBER.
Have heard a lot of Katherine on CD including her role as Gounod's SAPHO, a rarity, with its immense final aria before Sapho hurls herself from the cliffs to her death. I'll never forget Miss Ciesinski as BRANGANE in Tristan und Isolde (live at the Canadian Opera) She was fabulous. Her "watching vigilance" with her sung notices as Tristan and Isolde are in the throws of passion made for a remarkable Act II. Her solid mezzo filled the hall (even in softer passages) with Wagner's extraordinarily beautiful music..... K. C. was a superbly dependable performer with the gift of being able to delve into such a variety of roles from early opera to 20th Century Opera. She was a well known mezzo but deserved much higher status.

Late this evening I changed the channel to Classic Masterpieces, and Itzhak Perlman was just finishing up the Barber concerto, and a note in the screen's margin mentioned Barber's Pulitzer Prize for "Vanessa," and I thought, geez, why have I never listened to that, and so here I am at this site, and thank you for your warm enthusiasm. Very beautiful. But too bad the rest of the opera is not at this level (except for the quintet)
