Battery Powered Garage Workshop Lighting

  • After recently moving home I have access to a garage that I want to turn into a workshop, unfortunitly it doesn't have any electricity or lighting which isn't ideal.
I have solved the power issue by using cordless tools and want to deal with the lighting problem using the same dewalt 18v batteries.
By using these batteries I can have spares for everything and I only have to charge up one type of battery making my life a lot easier.

I have upgraded the system with a proper ceiling mounted light panel.

Ceiling mounting it will spread the light way more effectively, and make most things easier to see, and it won't minorly dazzle you when you get too close.
Extra help would be reflective/aluminum tape along the length of both sides of the strip. -However, another strip will benefit way more. But that's another $15 and half the battery life.

Thank you for making this video! I've been wanting to learn how to use an 18v tool battery to power a custom light panel for a project I'm working on for my mom and her upcoming birthday. She has very limited vision and needs custom lighting to read and do her tasks, so I'm going to build something similar, my question is about dimming. If I was to add a dimmer somewhere to this, where would or should that go, and can you guide me on that, I have very little experience with electrical wiring.

    Awesome idea mate!

Way cool. Once I discovered the 18v to 9v barrel plug converter (for milwaukee heated jacket)... the possibilities seemed endless! Do you know much about step regulators?

How long does one 4ah battery last? Also is there a link for the dc converter?

I used one of the in much the same way, however in my personal experience I found that after a few weeks my Dewalt battery stopped accepting a charge... I'm not sure if it died from being used in this way, or maybe it was just a coincidence, but I stopped doing it after that just in case, because the batteries are too expensive for me to keep trying it.

Same as you - rented property and garage in separate block. I've got 2x Bosch 18v garden tools (only one battery) and a 12v power drill. Which power source would your prefer? I've got two batteries for the drill...

Having no power in your garage sounds like such a pain. Can you not just get an electrician to run power to it? Might be cheaper than all of the batteries and non-stiop charging?
Alternately, can you get higher Amp Hour Dewalt batteries to run more LED strips?? Or maybe cheaper "generic" brands that use the same charger?
Also, try looking at mounting the LEDs against a mirror or have them sit in front of a mirror type surface to get extra light bounce. It could increase your light output quite a lot.

+Seon Rozenblum it's a rented property so no modifications sadly.
Going to try different mounting options soon but I will also try some reflective surfaces
The best value batteries £/Ah are the 4Ah batteries but I will have to give the cheaper ones a go, for a more controlled power draw they should be ok.

And not nearly as much fun... sweet gratification!
