When I first started ballet almost a year ago, I felt sick to my stomach every time I had to go. My instructor always brushed me off in class, never followed up the many times I asked for private lessons (even though I could pay), and constantly ignored me in general. My classmates were advanced girls who had been dancing at that studio since they were little, and every time I tried to make friends, they just gave me weird looks and walked away, talking amongst themselves. Quickly, I realized that for someone who was truly serious about progressing in ballet, and who wanted a deeper connection to it, this was NOT the experience I was paying for. I started at my new studio in December and fell in love with everything about it. I quickly made friends, my teacher was much more open to private lessons, and many times assured me that I wasn't a bad dancer at all and that I was actually very good. I started at 19, and I'm turning 20 in a few days. My advice to "late" starters is to just listen to your instincts and know why you're doing this and who you're doing it for. If you don't feel like a studio is taking you seriously enough no matter what you do, leave. It is doing nothing for you.

Brooklyn M. My heart hurts to hear about your first experience! I’m 22 and started nearly a year ago as well, and have struggled to feel accepted at my studio. I agree with the sick feeling: sometimes I didn’t want to go purely because I felt awful being left out and being surrounded by far more talented dancers. It felt incredibly liberating to remind myself that I’m not dancing because I want to be popular and socialize during class... I’m dancing for myself, and my journey is entirely independent from anyone else in that room.

Do NOT compare yourself to younger dancers . It does happen.

For my entire life I have liked dance and I remember times back in 5th-7th grade where I would go outside at night and just dance to music. However, when I first got into Kpop back in 2017, dance became something I loved and really wanted to get into. Im soon to be 17 and I took my first ballet class over this past summer and I absolutely loved it, but because of money I wasnt able to take it this fall and its made me super sad. I dont want to be a ballerina or a dancer in the future, but a doctor. However I have a passion for dance and I wont let trivial things stand in the way of that. Thank you so much for this video. I danced ballet was I was young and quit...still not exact sure as to why I did. I used to look back and say to myself...ugh! If I didn’t quit, i could have been doing this professionally by now. That was such a wrong mindset, because if I had not quit, I most likely would have not discovered musical theater (in college...ahem lol ) and then that journey brought me back to dance in a whole another way than I expected. I did a ballroom dance competition at the age of 26 and I’m finding that I can incorporate dance in different ways the older I get. I used to think I’m starting back “late”, but ya know, I don’t know where my path will lead & I’m not stopping now. BTW, older dancers can also look into their community colleges for less rates. You never know the connections you can meet wherever you are. Key is to just continue to improve and help those around us.

This video came right on time for me and made me really acept myself. I'm 16 and will be starting dance class next week, although I've wanted it for a long time, but didn't do it because the academies in my city wanted to put me in the classes with the girls way younger than me, like the kids, which always made me feel left out, and eventhough I've tried to open myself in this subject, everytime I mentioned dance class with my friends they made me feel down, saying I was to old and would never be good, specially the ones who have been dancing for years said that I wouldn't be able to make it. So I let it go because everyone told me no, until I overheard a teacher talking about this inclusive dance studio. I went there and they did make me feel comfortable, and now I'm starting there and all those coments about me starting to late started coming back and making me feel bad about myself, but your video touched me and now I feel like I can do this. Thank you so much!!

Thank you💗 I’m the eldest in my class (19 in level 4 & 5 ballet class), and although my dance teacher is SUPER supportive, it does sometimes feel challenging when I’m surrounding by much younger people who are way ahead of me, and I’m out here fumbling and falling! (But trying!) So thank you for all this advice💗

I wish there was a routine or something to follow because I started at 13 which I pretty late in dance. I wish there was a guide that I could follow for late dancers so they can advance quicker, bcs ppl like me r usually very lost when it comes where to start and how much is too much. 🙁

Thank you so much for this video!!! I danced on and off through childhood (when parents could afford lessons-some years they just couldn't) and then went on to dance 3times a week 14-16 years old before I got a back injury. im now in my mid 20s and doing aerial hoop for past year but noticed that practically all of my transitions etc are looking terrible again, can no longer do splits and spins or point my fingers and toes the way I used to. Ive kept debating over the past year whether it was too late to go back to dance classes to try and get back to where id like to be and your video has helped make my decision :) x

My case is a bit different. I started at 2 and continued until I was 7-8. I danced 4 days a week and I did recitals every year and competitions for two years. I was passionate about it but I was so difficult to work with as a child. I wanted things my way and my way only. Now that I’m older, I’ve changed and I realise that dance is what I’m meant to do. I wish I was easier to work with at that age. I’m really sorry for this. :( I’m 16 and started a few months ago but I’ve missed out on so many years. I’m a bit out of shape too. Even though I’m at a healthy weight for my height, I need to do body recomposition - losing fat and gaining muscle. It’s a long journey but one I’m prepared for. Thank you for the video :)

I used to dance ballet when I was 6, but I stopped at 8 because my teacher always yelled at me for talking and not concentrating, when it was the girls next to me talking to each other even though I was in between them. So I stopped because if you're always yelled at, it's honestly no fun.
Then I've started gymnastics when I was 9 and joined a gym at 11and I love it, but in the last few years I've had thoughts about starting up ballet again. I absolutely love dancing, but I also don't wanna give up gymnastics, so I told my parents that if they raised my allowance a bit, I could pay for gymnastics on my own and they't only have to pay for ballet (which I know is really expensive).
And I also told my Mum that I know that I'll never be a professional dancer, but this video really gave me hope and now I know that I'm not really a late-starter (even when I'm turning 16 next Tuesday) and that even though I'm (hopefully) starting at 16, I can still become a professional dancer and ballerina and whatever.

I’m about to turn 13, and I’ve been dancing for like 3 months. I really needed to here this, and I think this helped a lot, but my issue is I’m not going to a studio. My friends and I dance together and put on little recitals for our parents. But, I’m really nervous that being self taught is gonna have a different affect then being in class. I have been able to get my a la secondes and pirouettes thanks to your channel, and I do try to dance everyday, but I’m just scared it’s all for nothing. Do u have any advice for me?

I live in Japan, and I Don't know how to speak japanese.
I fell in love with ballet and just started when I turned 12, which is a couple of months back.
My studio is holding a performance at the local hall.
My mom is NOT happy with how they arranged everything.
She is trying to get me to go to a bigger, more 'trustable' ballet school in my area.
However, when I went to the ballet school, they were all SO good, and the students and I can't connect in any way, even though I make friends really easily, which made me feel sick in my stomach and I even said 'I don't wanna go back ever again.'
But apparently, it's the only choice if I want to continue taking ballet classes and MAYBE pursuing a career.
But staying in the current studio won't help me go anywhere.
    What should I do??

    • @Ann90265
      @Ann90265 Pƙed 4 lety

Hi, I know you want a response from Auti, but I thought I'd toss in an opinion, for what it's worth. If the "good" ballet school is your only choice near you, you will have to develop some strategies to make it work for you. It's nice to have studio friends, but you are really there to learn and progress. The others are good because they have probably been doing it longer than you. You can take the opportunity to learn by watching them and what makes them good. Just don't compare yourself ("Compare equals Despair"), because you just started and your circumstances are different from theirs. Work for your Personal Best; not Best in Show. Before long, if you keep at it, some of the other dancers might quit, get injured, get married, drift away, relocate, or whatever, and you might eventually find yourself as one of the better ones there. Just be patient and make it your goal to simply improve from where you are today. Keep a diary of how you are doing with each of your moves. That can help you notice your improvement easier. Good luck!
