  • Hey sailors,
    Most likely if you start working on cruise ships you will be sharing a cabin with another crew member who will start off as a stranger to you. Knowing the things I mention in this video will help you prepare to live in this small space.

    Hi Lucy, I was on the MV island Princess in 2012 as staff photographer - in our cabin the top bunk was the bunk to get - it had loads of room and you could sit up on it. So I had the bottom bunk for the first half of my contract then moved to the top bunk for the second half.

    Big time cruiser and completely enjoy your video. I am much too old to serve on a cruise ship but really enjoy hearing your experiences. One thing I thought I'd point out to you and your viewers. Today, nothing on a cruise ship is dumped into the ocean. Certainly no trash, food waste (unless treated) and certainly no water. All water is treated on board ship and is recirculated and/or stored for disposal upon arriving in port. I am sure your cleaning products are regulated so as not to counter the various water treatment and sewage treatment processes that are on board. Happy cruising!

    I never used the cleaning products that the ship provide, I am a mentaly ill when it comes to cleaning, so I was used to by the same products that I use at home (when the ship is doing my country itinerary), I also bring a broom to the ship, to sweep the cabin carpet every week and a dustpan. In the toilet I put that thing that oozes a good smell whenever you flush the toilet (I don't know the name in english).

    some of these cabins are extremely noisy, they put me next to a workshop, which was fine, but at night they were having parties almost every night in there, I had to call security numerous times. If you are "lucky" your cabin could be located next to some dancers, those people never sleep and keep you awake a night long. Then you have to wake up in the morning while they are sleeping until 3pm.!!!. Complaining about it does not help, you end up quitting your job. This happened to me when I worked for Royal Caribbean, I had no room mate, but the cabins located at the bow fwd are the worst on Jewel of the Seas.

    I have an overactive bladder. Maybe that’s TMI lol. But I usually switch with people on planes so I can have the aisle seat. Otherwise I will constantly be waking someone up, whether it’s to get out of the middle or window seat on a plane, or by getting up and down a bunk bed a bunch of times throughout the night. Would this be something I try to just ask my roomie or should I talk to the hiring manager /HR OMGGG this is so embarrassing

    If you like your freedom and human rights and you want to live like a modern human being, do not accept a job on board...They have very weird hierarchy where only officers have single cabins....dine with guests etc. If your position do not include stripes, do not accept because this is a trap...They are like a kingdom with kings and slaves.

    As a muso we arrived and left the ship altogether, so no claiming of territory in the cabin needed. The cabin steward was in nearly every day, we came to an arrangement about tipping, maybe a dollar a day each if he didnt really have to do anything, just empty the bin or whatever. It was always customary for the disembarking trio to leave the cabin clean and tidy for the new joiners, with bedsheets removed and clean ones fetched etc.
    One contract me and the drummer arrived onboard, got in the cabin and it was disgraceful - used cans and bottles everywhere, dirty bedsheets in the corner, rubbish everywhere, ashtrays full etc. The previous band hadnt cleaned it or anything, just left it after an obvious last night party. So we had to do it all ourselves, however.... the whole place was scattered all over with loads of coins - pound coins, 50pees, American money, foreign money, all sorts of loose change from the UK and all over! all over the cabin, every corner like they had just scooped up handfuls and chucked it about. We picked it all up, there was about 30 or 40 quid. + all the foreign shrapnel...they must hve felt guilty about the mess they left in a hurry to get off the ship :-) . Dont know if they ever came back.

    • @davidlockwood9192
      @davidlockwood9192 Před rokem +1

      Good news on getting the spare change after the previous guys didn’t clean it for you! Always an unwritten rule that you leave the cabin ready for your relief. Even as Capt ( as I was on an oil tanker) we always stripped and made the bed for our relief, even though I had a cabin steward! Just common courtesy to a fellow professional

    • @CruisingAsCrew
      @CruisingAsCrew  Před 3 lety

      Sometimes. It depends on the cruise line.

    • @carldefoe4673
      @carldefoe4673 Před 2 lety +3

      Duo would normally share, they are usually husband and wife acts. It is possible to get your own cabin as a muso, Oriana did individual cabins when I was on there, but 9 times out of 10 no. Unless you've got a good agent or well known and go on as cabaret, passenger status (like Jayne MacDonald) or supernumerary, then you wouldnt have to do crew drills either, but you would have to be well known and respected by the company, they wouldnt give you it just starting out without a name or TV recognition whatever.
      Bear in mind, musicians on a ship need a massive amount of material, you cannot get by with just a couple of good 45s and an acoustic set - you need about 5x45mins of all different material per day, for maybe one or two weeks without repeating yourself.
      Yes, I know.
      I knew a Hungarian piano player had to do 8 spots a day on P&O Cruises. When he complained about it, the assistant Cruise director said, well, you know where the gangplank is.
