Over the course of each show, celebrity guests reveal amazing stories about themselves, some of which are true and some of which are not. The aim of the game is to fool the opposition into mistaking fact for fiction and fiction for fact.
In this episode, the guests joining Lee Mack and David Mitchell are Rhod Gilbert, Vernon Kay, Dara O Briain and Denise Van Outen.

The bit about "but not so unnoteworthy as to in itself to be noteworthy" is a very David Mitchell thing to say...that had his signature all over it.
videos4mydad isn't that contradictory?
kind of think of it as a scale of -2 to 2 of noteworthyness and the actual noteworthyness is the absolute value of the score. So a outfit that is a -2 is as noteworthy as a 2 for being unoteworthy.
You've really botched that quote
Leaving but ONE question...âŠ...Which Foreign State has he Sworn his Allegiance ?
Nah, it would be very hard to read that way
His eyes when he says "If there was a chameleon here it would stand out" just scream insanity
+blind999 Lee's "comedian" comment though! So fast.
+blind999 He genuinely looked like he was trying to convince someone about an insane conspiracy.
blind999 While the analogy isn't perfect, it fits I think. Yes a chameleon is a MASTER of blending in, but if you were even vaguely aware of its presence, the sheer disphoria between the animal and the place would mean you would NEVER forget about it and probably ac5ively look around for it, defeating it's point of blending in and ULTIMATELY having people forget it's even there.
Similarly with a man in a gray suit with a gray tie: they are trying SO hard to blend in they seem to people much like that chameleon. They might be blending in jn the traditional sense, but they are doing so in such an overt fashion that they leave an impression that has people remember and actively look for them; defeating the point.
David doesn't want to be traditionally distinguishable, nor does he want to be that chameleon. He wants to straddle the line so that an observer A.) sees nothing unique about him and B.) doesn't see that he is TRYING to blend in...which would be more unique.
I agree with what you're saying. I wonder if there's some term to describe this phenomenon.
tnerb tnerb
Do you know what Dysphoria means?
The moment he instantly says a gray tie you know he's telling the truth and that he has thought a great deal about this.
He's probably thought a great deal about everything.
It's that sort of overthinking about the mundane that fits his character so well.
I picture him reaching for gray tie at the store while remarking to himself how un-noteworthy it is, his hand stopping dead as he questions how it could have attracted his attention in the first place if it truly was un-noteworthy, then him turning away and going home where he lies in bed and stares at the ceiling.

@@kawaiilotus That joke of yours is so subtle it stands out!
I loved his "yes well of course it's true" at the end. It's like, come on guys, you know me by now...
+joe schofield IKR SO TRUE :)
omg spoiler đ
He sounded a bit offended that someone could even question whether it was true or not.
I love how David is just like "Yup, I'm a weirdo, you all know this now, oh well." It delights me.
Of course it does.
I read that in his voice.
"If there was a chameleon in here, it would stand out"
"Well if there was a comedian in here, he would stand out"
I'm dead đ€Ł
"I don't want to sound too sexy."
David, you always sound too sexy.
Agreed.
@@Psiberzerker "Under my underwear I'm completely naked"đ
But he also doesn't want to sound so unsexy that it becomes sexy
Oh, yes!
Word: Beard
David's Definition: A failure in personal hygiene
we need a David Mitchell dictionary
To be fair, HIS beard was a failure in personal hygeine. Not beards in general.
@@almightyk11 MY beard is just a proof of me being too lazy to shave every day. Now I just trim it weekly, so that's six days effort saved...
@@almightyk11 Every beard is a failure of personal hygiene. Beards are ugly and disgusting. Yes, all beards!
@@mytube001 You're entitled to your incorrect opinion.
Love David's crazy eyes after the chameleon line.
He's definitely more comfortable in his skin. Old David would have made a very different joke when Lee asked about his underpants.
What kind of joke?
Matthew Randell this is a 7 year old comment! He wonât respond
@@user-uq1fq6gs3i you'd be surprised!
Matthew Randell / No I donât think I will be.
@@user-uq1fq6gs3i He would have made a self-deprecating joke back then instead of acting 'sexual'. David was notoriously low on self-confidence in the old days. He's improved since his marriage to Victoria Coren.
âIf there was a chameleon in this room, it would stand out.â
The chameleon in the room: [smiles smugly to itself and says nothing]
âI hate those moments of being physically noticed.â Damn, thatâs relatable.
"I call those my teens" -brilliant
David Mitchell seems so much more confident and comfortable these days
Zach Radge shut it
+Zach
Agreed, it was something I noticed as well.
@@Widdekuu91 You _noticed_ it? David won't be pleased...
@@alexander_strachan Uh-oh...
It's the beard
I love how David Mitchell can literally just say a standard sentence, and it'll be funny.
That is his brilliant secret to his humour. Love that.
This is one of the most outstanding exchanges between David and Lee. Notice how no one else intervened... barely Rob.
The blonde bimbo was surprisingly quiet...
Damn that comedian punch line was for the first brilliant, and it took 2 seconds for people to process it :D Salute Hahaha
"Yes, well of course it's true!" is the most awesome, cheerful response. Ah, David Mitchell, you are the best.
Lee Mackâs last gag was possibly his best ever line.
I could never adequately express how much I love these two together. đâ€ïž
He's the most noteworthy one on the show (To me at least)
Nick98l But is that due to his appearance?
Danochy Appearance-wise? Yes. Personality-wise? Also yes
unfortunately for david, he was born with noteworthily large irises and so will never escape the horror of being visually noteworthy
Thought I was the only one who noticed his noteworthily large irises.
+Princess Jesus Huh. I honestly hadn't noticed that. I'll be certain to take note of it in the future....
+Princess Jesus no no, he's just rolling (haha)
+Princess Jesus That's just because he's tripping balls, your highness and holiness.
they're not that large
Except hes probably the best dressed on the show lol.
that's because his butler dresses him lololol
I think his wife dressed him.
And straightened his hair and whitened his teeth.
Well, not really in a very noteworthy way.
Rob is very well dressed usually.
@@SYL3RR His sock game is definitely on lock.
David Mitchell notoriously avoids attention. He has frequently pointed this out on Would I Lie To You, the popular prime time telivision show on which he is a team captain, alluded to on the popular prime time telivision show Was It Something I Said, on which he is the host,, hinted at on the popular television comedy shows That Mitchell and Webb Look and The Peep Show, implied on many of his regular appearances on Have I got News For You and QI and referred to on many of the numerous radio programmes for which he has become a well know figure. It is an aspect of his shy and retiring personality that he makes absolutely clear on his very own You Tube channel, David Mitchell's Soapbox. He is virtually a hermit.
You've figured it all out, haven't you?
"An essentially private man who wished his total indifference to public notice to be universally recognised", to quote Tom Stoppard.
Though to be fair Stoppard wasn't writing about David Mitchell...
Catherine Butler he went to my school so whar about that ey
That's not the point. He can want to be on television and doing comedy because he enjoys it, yet still not want all the attention and annoyance that is normally associated with celebrity.
So funny!!! I laughed many times, especially with "under my underwear, I'm naked"
"i don't want to sound sexy..." love it!
I'm sure that he was sincere here.
Honestly that âif there was a COMEDIAN in here it would stand out!â is so endlessly impressive to me every time I come back to this
David Mitchell is my spirit animal.
xÞñÏt ... lol... literally thought those words 20 seconds ago. :P
xÞñÏt Just want to ask... Do you know who WillNE is?
*Domen Bremec*
no.. should I?
xÞñÏt Just asking as a friend of his has the same avatar
Why do we keep calling people animals? What happened to the term soulmate?
0:04 Lee Mackâs expression...gold!
I've always wondered how to grow a beard... do I like have to water it?
And make sure it gets plenty of sunlight.
Xanatos712 That's where I went wrong... I used to rub a potato on it every morning instead!
Paul Kerrigan Spare the neck -_-
... You're a dwarf without a beard? Is that even okay?
Mix bean sprout seeds with water and trowel onto your chin.
A sophisticated bit of comedy hereâŠ
Why does Dara look like he's been green screened in?
It's because of the shine on his big, bald, lovely head.
He's too large a man for the TV studios of mortals
Because this is a panel show, but he's part of the panel rather than the host! Surprised time didn't unfold the second he sat somewhere other than a host's seat...
The more I watch David, the more relatable I find him.
"I call them my teens!"
-David Mitchell, 2013
Lee and David are simply brilliant.
He was so happy saying of course it's true đ
David and Lee - the most wholesome married couple!
David Mitchell is such a brilliant man.
I so love british humor.. it's so sharp I call it tart and so dry I call it arid.. wow no greater words were ever spoken...lol đ
Describing growing a beard as "it wasn't like a brilliant rollercoaster" is such a David Mitchell way of phrasing it.
"Yes, well of course it's true." Such simple brilliance :)
David is spot on about the spy wanting to blend in, that they cannot react spontaneously...so much so, that it was used in the Sherlock Holmes movie!
David Mitchell years ahead of us rocking normcore in 2013
Words cannot describe how much I love that chameleon line.
David Mitchell is describing something that is known in the military and espionage field as 'gray man tactics': the art of blending into a crowd unnoticed.
"yes, well of course it's true." classic david.
"I deeply hate those moments of being physically noticed"
I think that's perfectly reasonable, i'm gonna start following his example
I think itâs reasonableâŠbut I like being noticed! Which colour would make people notice my hair more if I dyed it? Iâm thinking either blue or green! Noteworthy as possible please.
@@josephchambers2000 magenta..
I can't even believe how similar David and Victoria are.
"I hate those moments of being physically noticed" - Yep :L
I like David's blue shirt.
That's actually a really reasonable philosophy, I like it!
Most people live their lives this way; they just don't realize it.
Love David, in my opinion, David can be what ever he wants. â€ïžâźïž
David: "One of the codes I live my life by..."
Lee: "Oh, this is going to be so much fun!!!"
I've seen this clip before and last week I saw some clip of David in it and thought to myself 'well, David's tie looks a bit too noteworthy' đ
"under my underwear, im naked!" hilarious
I cannot wait!!! I live in Canada and have to patiently wait for certain lovely youtubers to upload the episodes...so excited! It's so cute to see a wedding ring on David Mitchell's finger now. :)
I once bought....a horse.
Has to be the best WILTY moment ever.
David actually looks pretty sharp in this episode!
This guy is freaking hilarious!
i knew it was true the moment he said it because that's exactly how i choose outfits too
I love this guy.
Love this code!
Hooray! A new season!

That Lee Mack bloke...fuckin' brilliant! đ
brilliant!
I think we can all agree, David is hot af with the beard.
He's right. I recognised Jimmy carrs grey tie on cats does countdown from moss bros.
I wish I could watch David all the time!
Me too
'If there was a chameleon in here, it would stand out' đ
Having seen his Soapbox videos, knew this was true instantly
The giveaway was that he instantly had an opinion on what is so unnoteworthy so as to be noteworthy
Ben Bryson the giveaway was that David Mitchell said the thing that he said. As soon as he read half the card, I thought, TRUE.
"Yes, well, of course, it's true!"
I can watch these a week later because i forget the answers.
So happy
Dara's loving it
I enjoyed the irony of David wearing a bright blue shirt, which causes him to notably stand out, I wonder if he planned that hah!
I actually forgot he hadn't had a beard, so he's still succeeding.
1:02 I feel that.
This is so iconic
David did a whole episode of his Soapbox program on this very concept.
One thing that I noticed after David made that comment about grey ties was that on every episode of WILTY after the one that statement was on, Rob never wore grey ties for filming! He always wore ties that were different colours or of varying patterns!
The fatal flaw in David's little plan is that he is a beloved public figure. No matter how you slice it, that's noteworthy. As evidenced by the fact I just noted it.
David Mitchell is one of the most famous men in Britain any room he walks into it would be noteworthy.
perfect thumbnail for this btw xD
at 1:50 is so the mitchell and webb look
how awesome would it be if everyone lived this way!
Spirit animal!
I feel very similarly
Lee sure has a knack for getting the best out of David. I dont think many people can keep ahead of him.
Aaaaaaah !!! So thiiiis is where it came from.
I think Lee n David just had this conversation in a pub and one of them thought damn it lets just put this on the show!
David Mitchell is so funny
David has a Hitchens-esque look going on here.
not quiet as hung over tho
I knew it was true because I do that too and I figured he surely would.
David sounded like Murray Hewitt from Flight of the Conchords there for a bit. :-)
Denise Van driving me outta my mind. Wow!!!
At the end, I believe we can all agree that 'philosophy' was not too grandiose a word.
