"We're created just to die"
That's basically Ralsei in this fight
@@Geno579 Ralsei is the healer, and some enemies in games go for the healer most of the time.
It's one thing to make lyrics for a wordless song.
It's another thing entirely to make lyrics so good that you can hardly believe they're not canon.
@@otame4858 I mean, I can try? You've given me an excuse to gush a little bit about something I'm a big fan of, so it's going to become a bit of a long read though. I hope you don't mind?
The Touhou Project is, as indicated by the title, a doujin project; a multi-media open-source indie franchise. The TH fandom practically runs on fan-created content, which was an intentional part of the Touhou Project's design: ZUN, the one-man creative team behind the games, has excellent character designs, but he is not a very good artist -- only recently did he start getting arm length proportions right for example. This, of course, inspires fans to create a lot of fan art to make his character designs justice, and ZUN himself encourages this, having a completely non-ironic "let's see you do better" attitude to criticism of his own works: Think you can draw better than him? Then do it. Think you can write better stories than him? Then do it. Think you can make better games than him? Then do it. Think you can make an entire unofficial fanime series with official-looking production quality in absence of any actual official Touhou anime series or movies? Then do it.
Characters have reasonably well-established core personalities, but most other things about them (backgrounds, everyday life, grander ambitions, their actual relationships with each other, etc) is largely ambiguous... So much so, in fact, that none of the official Touhou manga series have had Reimu, the primary protagonist of Touhou, as the focal main character: Everything is primarily seen from other people's perspectives with her only being, at most, a major secondary character. This is done so that Reimu's true nature is never laid bare for the readers: We mostly don't know her true thoughts and feelings beyond the surface-level stuff... Consequently, fans are encouraged to form their own interpretations of the characters and commit those interpretations to fan-created manga comics, fanfiction, fan videos, etc. Many of which are regarded as even better than the official Touhou works.
This design philosophy also applies to the music: ZUN pretty much only makes great music, but he exclusively uses synthesizers to produce it and never makes any official lyrics or anything like that. However, he composes the tracks to sound like karaoke music, so you can hear on the music where the singing is supposed to go. And boy howdy have the fans noticed and made good use of that: There's a torrent file somewhere here on the internet that has more than 1.8 terabytes of fan-made Touhou music on it, and there are currently fan-made remixes of every single Touhou track in just about every genre conceivable: Folk, rock, metal, orchestral, pop, swing, trance, etc, much of it with added lyrics. It has gotten to the point where, when one person asked ZUN why he hasn't formed a band to play Touhou music live with yet during a Q&A panel, ZUN replied that he doesn't need to do that: His fans do it for him.
@@otame4858 Eh, let's throw in a few example tracks for you, too:
Official Touhou track: Bloom Nobly, Ink-Black Cherry Blossoms ~ Border of Life. The boss theme of Yuyuko Saigyouji, the ghost of a girl who, in Perfect Cherry Blossom, stole spring in order to make a sealed cherry blossom tree in the netherworld bloom again so that she'd be able to revive the girl buried under its roots, Yuyuko having long since forgotten that the girl under the tree was, in fact, herself -- her body and ability to invoke death being the only things keeping the demonic tree, the Saigyou Ayakashi, from awakening and devouring the souls of the living: czcams.com/video/w0vF-ixYAjY/video.html

Theme of the final boss of Subterranean Animism, Utsuho Reiuji, a hell raven youkai born out of the soot in The Former Hell of Blazing Fires who devoured the corpse of the yatagarasu, the three-legged god bird incarnating the Sun's black spots. Doing this granted her the power to control nuclear fusion, but also made her go mad with power, leading her to attempt to burn the whole world down in the misguided belief that this is what everyone would want... After all, why would anyone ever want to live in a world of clear waters and lush greenery when they could live in a blasted hellscape instead? Though she's happier now that no-one can hate her any longer, there's a sense of melancholy since no-one can love her either: Even if people look straight at her they may not notice that she is there, like a pebble in plain sight by the side of the road, and she is not even able to be remembered any longer, with adults forgetting about her the moment they take their eyes off of her, and being to children what we humans call an "imaginary friend": a invisible being that children may see and befriend, but who they forget as they grow older... as a side-effect of closing her third eye, she's also become able to read and manipulate people's subconscious minds: czcams.com/video/pGzWWQvKJOs/video.html

(What a mess we're in but now

When the light is running low
And the shadows start to grow
And the places that you know
Cut away the afterglow
There's a light inside your soul
Slowly shrinking in the cold
From the truth deep down you know
And yet darker, we will go
Can't you see?
Your world's a fantasy!

"Freedom denies the right to choose"
"He started to say things that didn't completely make sense, but didn't completely not make sense, either"
@Histoire Sama I thought it's referring to the freedom of someone else denying you the right to choose over them or something along these lines. You cannot meaningfully choose a big picture if other people are free to decide on their own actions as well.
Or maybe something about chaos in general: In order to be able to choose, your choices have to have some kind of meaning, otherwise you don't choose anything. So if everything just behaves completely chaotically ("freely"), there is nothing you can meaningfully decide because your so-called "choices" don't matter.
Also, in the end, Kris's freedom denies the player the right to choose anything when they just throw you into the cage, freeing themself.
Probably the first or the last one... Or I overanalyzed an oxymoron.
That's deep. Weirdly enough the first thing I did after seeing this was laugh
It's simple, really.
In Undertale, you can make choices but you are not free from consequences.
In Deltarune, you are free of consequences but you cannot make choices.
Jevil himself achieved what Spamton could not even with help from Kris.
Jevil is ALREADY in his "NEO form", so to speak. He is free, and nothing constrains him. Spamton, having gained power, was constrained by threads getting rid of which he was ready to soar into the sky ... But in the end, he just fell, while Jevil freely levitates above the ground.
And he gained said freedom from accepting life is a game, thus not caring if he was imprisoned or flying freely through the air.
Jevil is not free either, he only believes he’s free, when in reality, he’s the most trapped of them all.
@@maniacalmurderer4123 Jevil just understands that the freedom of the mind is much more important than the freedom of the body.
But he is a veo (very effective obstacle) Not a neo (Not effective obstacle)
Jevil singing a twisted version of the first part of "Don't Forget" is very interesting, given that the song is otherwise only heard by the Player. In the context of a (not) musical, this would be an interesting way to convey how Jevil knows more than he should.
Not to mention how Man has at least twice now successfully predicted some part of the next chapter in a song, once in Chaos King (iirc it was how Dark Fountains are created) and once here, with the aforementioned verse and the Weird Route.
I just noticed, he also said "anything I do is no sin", and in Ch2 Father Alvin mentioned how their religion doesn't have such a thing as sin.
Well he is a Jester. In history, a jester's job was to inform the king of bad news but while masking the horrid truth behind jokes. Would make sense if the guy knew the truth but it is so far from what everyone considers to be the truth and just got judged insane

People seem to misinterpret the line "I can do anything!" He means that, because his world is just a game and his choices have no consequence, he may as well do whatever he wants.
I think it also refers to his mastery over all suits. Rudinns are confined to diamond attacks, hathys to hearts, lancer and the chaos king with spades. But Jevil can use every suit attack plus some other unique attack fonts unique to him (carousel, devil's knife)

_What a mess we're in now, but the joker's running wild._
I love this part so much. The 1990s sound card style of the original lyrics also serves to give it this 1950s vinyl record sound. Combined with the religious language makes it feel kind of disturbing, in the best possible way. It's no accident that this also mirrors Ring Around the Rosie and Pop goes the Weasel, both of which are slightly dark old-timey kids' games.
And it raises so many questions. What does it mean "begat the father to the child?" It basically implies the child already existed, and then someone's gathered sin summoned a father into existence out of nothing (possibly the father's own sin). What does the carousel represent? The world? It sounds almost as if the Devil is someone *outside* the world (hmmm, who might that be I wonder 🕈︎☜︎✋︎☼︎👎︎).
"there's a light inside your soul, slowely shrinking in the cold"
totally unintentional, but considering chapter two thats absolutely perfect when jevil already hints at several things in that chapter!
Considering it's probably a reference to the "DON'T FORGET" lyrics... yeah.
"There is a light inside your soul slowly shrinking in the cold"
Man, that's some creepy unintentional prophecizing.
@Mettaton best waifu They're slightly modified though. Instead of a reassurance, it becomes a threat.
The light inside your soul is shrinking, and it's only going to become darker.
@Mettaton best waifu No, they're not the same. The actual lyrics from Don't Forget are "There's a light inside your soul that's still shining in the cold"
the line "the best place to hide is insanity" is such a good one, because yeah, Jevil hides from his own existential dread via literally going mad, the whole "i can do anything" doesnt mean he is physically capable of doing anything, it just means if whatever he wants to do is within his abilities, then he can and will do it without consequence, which is both a very good and harmful way of seeing the world
on one end, if you perceive the world like that it means you can achieve your dream easier, on the other hand, you could go around killing people, then in court just say "in my defence we're all going to perish in the inevitable heat death of the universe anyway, so me stabbing that man 67 times means nothing!" (which is definitely something jevil would do)
It can also be heard as "hide ... in sanity" which from Jevil's perspective would indeed describe how his fellow Darkners reacted when he tried to explain what he'd learned- Seam implies they could sense he was onto something despite being mad, but chose to write it off because, hey, the very idea of your entire universe being a game is just crazy, right?
It took me. THREE YEARS to realize that everything in "When the light is running low, and the shadows start to grow, and the places that you know cut away the afterglow, there's a light inside your soul, slowly shrinking in the cold" is a complete inversion of Don't Forget.
Edit: Also, "and yet darker we will go" and "your world's a fantasy" seem to also direct reference it. That was really, really clever.
What interesting about Jevil is that he's RIGHT. While everyone else is stuck with one type of card or piece (Ruddin has diamonds and ONLY diamonds, same goes for Hathy, Clover, and the spade family with their respective symbols), Jevil can use anything, can DO anything. He doesn't seem to follow a set pattern, unlike everything else. he's not bound by the constraints of the normal world, and for that reason, he's the only free one. His lyric line "freedom denies the right to choose" is correct. You are presented with the illusion of freedom, but in the end, you have no choice but to do what the game says, the Prime examples being at the start, middle, and end of the game. When Susie "asks" you if you're going to go with her, your choices are immediately snatched away, and just after that, you can try to choose where you are going to go, but Susie verbally ropes up back and only allows you to go with her. When you build a machine to trash your own ass, you can choose what to put on it, but, ultimately, the device is destroyed. Spare the darkners, fight the darkners, the ending is the same: you go back to the surface and go home. Even the minor moments make sure that there is no real difference as to what happens. The only way to get something significantly different after the fight is when you spare or kill JEVIL specifically (okay, and the king, but given what this game is, that probably won't have much of an impact). He'll give you different pieces of foreshadowing depending on what you do. That's why Jevil is right about his cell not really being a cell: it's the only place where you are free to do what you wish. You have so many choices to choose, compared to the one or two that most battles give. Sparing or fighting gives different endings, compare that to the very minor differences in common encounters. Jevil isn't stuck in there by himself, you're stuck out there with the other prisoners of fate.
Edit: Okay, since everyone and their mother has said it, I know the real-word reason he can use every attack is that he is the joker card. Also that the reason he's in there is because the joker is usually banned. I've gotten enough of those comments.
Edit 2. Upon re-fighting jevil, I discovered he does have a set attack pattern... up until he uses final chaos. Then patterns get thrown to the wind.
whos to say jevil isn't trapped in the bridge that separates undertale from deltarune the 2 points one saying your choices don't matter and the other saying there is karma an they do matter the in between is when we go on way or the other the only truly free ones are gaster " watching from within the code" and jevil being able to "do anything" one you reach this chaotic nearly impossible harmony of being outside the rules of either world and heck other worlds/ games. i read in a fanfic that jevil summons dimentios chaos heart adding to this i can do anything trope ( and yes it is again a fanfic but its a hearty and he IS able to use all the card signs so it could happen.)

"Freedom denies the right to choose"
Just realized that pretty much could be a metaphor for the fact that you can choose your major, but said major basically locks your choices of what classes you have to take. Also the fact that most people will say "You can choose your electives" but no matter what you have to take math. There's also the fact that as soon as you get a major, everyone will expect you to be good in it and expect you to get a job related to it.
I have no words. I've listened many of your "musical" covers but this one beats all of them by a large margin.
Everything is perfect: the music, the lyrics, the complete chaos, the animation of Jevil jumping around.
CHAOS CHAOS LET IT RAIN

@@justtherabbithole2577FROM THE TRUTH DEEP DOWN YOU KNOW
AND YET DARKER WE WILL GO.
CAN'T YOU SEE?
Now complete it with the chaos of four lyrics at once
I'm late, but just binged the hour version and I think he's singing enlightenment. Not about it, just the core stuff.
'the world will spin, hypnotizing, terrorizing those locked within.'
Sounds an awful lot like the stuff I've heard about Samsara, the cycle of reincarnation that keeps souls trapped on earth, often by simply giving them no break from the life of flesh, in turn preventing them from reaching enlightenment.
'I see now a world gone blind, that is how I found my mind'
Very often, the driving force behind the pursuit of enlightenment seems to be figuring out that everyone's being blinded by the shiny illusions in front of them and nobody really understands what they're doing.
'we're created just to die, mortal sin's the reason why'
strongly echoes the "the root of suffering is desire" koan, but with the baked in 'desire is missing the point/sin'
'all around the game of life we laugh and play and revel, don't fall off the carousel or else you'll meet the devil'
this and the following points look like he's speaking from a fully inverted perspective. This one sounds like he's mocking the desperate clinging to the spinning world, more than telling you to cling. Fear of this 'devil' is often enough to drive people back into the prison, after all.
'everyone knows the best place to hide is insanity'
EVERYONE.
The insanity that he's talking about is something known to every soul in the world, even if they flee from the knowledge.
'there's a light inside your soul slowly shrinking from the cold from the truth deep down you know, and darker we will go.'
As long as you're fleeing from the truth of enlightenment, you're willfully going darker and darker. You know that the world around you is a prison, but you still hide in the insanity that it's a meaningful, real world.
'All his gathered sin begat the father to the child'
the sin, the failing, of clinging to the carousel prison is taught and passed to the young in slightly different ways, but it's all the same sin. Clinging to your chains. Also bounces off of
'anything I do is no sin'
If the one and only sin is loving your prison, then anything a free man does is sinless by nature. No matter his action, it is his action, nothing more.
'freedom denies the right to choose'
the idea of 'choice' implies that you have a limited number of options for what to do. A free man cannot choose because his options aren't limited by the spinning prison. A free man simply acts. restricting himself to a few options and choosing one would be grabbing the carousel and going for a spin instead of acting as a free man.
'in this game everyone will lose'
As long as you're watching the spinning world, you've already lost. Playing is the lose condition. To stop losing is to stop playing, and become free.
Anyway, that's a lot of what I hear now that I've let myself steep in the song for several hours.
This has helped me understand more about Jevil and the lyrics for this song. Ever since I heard world revolving recently its so good I can't stop listening to it I have always wanted to play Deltarune but I am so bad at that kind of game I couldn't beat Undertale without my friends help but I love the story and characters of these games Jevil is one of my favorite characters from his theme and what I have read about him.
@@shelvana2725 Glad I could shed some light.
I have this impression that most people see chaos as merely the lolrandum nonsense from a while back. I'm just glad to be able to see a coherent chaotic characterization for once.
Jevil is a Joker.
The Joker is normally not included in the deck (Locked Away)
The Joker trumps all cards (I can do anything!) and is considered a wild card (Chaos)
Well done, Toby; and well done, guys, Jevil would be proud.

I'll be honest, the reason I prefer this more than the remaster is because it's more real chaos. They don't hold back, they don't keep controlled, and my favourite part is the layered vocals all being there, at the same volume, where in the remaster, they almost censor the backing vocals, making them too quiet to really hear.
"All these bug are in my brain"

this kind of summarises jevil's fight
“Everyone knows the best place to hide is insanity!”
quarantine in a nutshell
"Up and down and up and down and..." Jevil constantly repeats to himself. He laughs. "It's lonely being the only one free."
"I should say." A voice agrees. Jevil looks to his left and sees another jester, one with yellow and purple.
"And who might you be, friend?" Jevil asks.
"I am another free man. One as quick and as clever as you." The jester explains. Jevil laughs.
"Another free man? Uee hee hee! Another friend!"
The jester chuckles. "Indeed. A friend. So let us show our way of friendship and strike a deal."
Jevil stands up. "Go on."
"They say we are prisoners when we are the only ones free." The jester explains. "I am aware of the arrival of three people. They will come down to your cell. Tell them about the key and send them off on a mission to find said key. When they come back... fight them. But do not kill them quite yet."
"Must I wait for something?" Jevil asks.
"Why yes. Wait for a portal to show up, throw the human, I believe his name is Kris, into the portal, and then go in yourself. We will kill him there."
Jevil laughs. "Of course we have a deal!"
"Very good." The jester responds. "Now remember, wait for the portal."
"Yes, yes, of course." Jevil assures him. "I'll remember... hopefully... maybe."
"Good." The jester laughs. He then creates a portal and starts to walk towards it. "Now I believe I shall go. I am expected elsewhere."
"Yes, yes, of course." Jevil agrees. "But before you do, may I ask what your name is?"
The jester stops and turns back to Jevil. "I am the master of dimensions, the pleaser of crowds.
"I am Dimentio! Remember the name well."
