The Exorcist - Linda Blair's own voice

- Here's Linda Blair's actual performance as recorded on set, followed by the same scenes dubbed by the great Mercedes McCambridge in the released film.
From the Associated Press:
McCambridge was hired to portray The Demon in William Friedkin's 1973 smash hit The Exorcist. After weeks of what she called the hardest work she had done for a film, she had been promised prominent mention in the credits. But when she attended the preview, her name was missing. As she left the theater in tears, Friedkin tried to explain that there had been no time to insert her credit. The Screen Actors Guild intervened and forced her inclusion in the credits. - Krátké a kreslené filmy
Linda Blair really was a great little actress. The overdub with the raspy old voice made it 1000% more effective but Blair's expressions and delivery were spot on.
After seeing this I have even more respect for Linda Blair. If her acting had not been as fabulous as it was, McCambridge's vocals would not have been as effective.
She doesn't get enough credit
I agree. She's one hell of an actress.
Very cool to hear this exchange in Linda Blair’s own voice!! But in the end, the choice to dub it was very effective for the additional chills.
There are a few moments when Blair's real voice through the makeup makes it seem creepier, but generally McCambridge's voice gives it a big boost of credibility.
Linda Blair's own voice really works well when the demon is delighting in it's awful things, when the demon is angry, Mercedes McCambridge definitely works better.
Demons aren't supposed to sound cute and cuddly. Good choice going with Mercedes McCambridge.
Yeah!
Fun fact: In addition to falling off the wagon and getting back to chain smoking, (for the vocal effect,) Mercedes McCambridge requested to be tied and restrained to her chair in the recording booth when she dubbed these lines, because she knew that when you are under restraint, your voice changes, whether you are aware of it or not.
👍🏼🤙🏽👌🏽
She was a truly dedicated actress!
The dubbed version mixed with a bit of Blair’s voice could have been interesting. Linda’s voice and the Mercedes voice from “and I’m the devil”
Holy crap, this is sooo freaking weird to hear the sweet voice of little Linda Blair coming out of that hideous monster created by the genius Dick Smith.
Instantly this scene is now adorable
In all fairness Linda gave Mercedes a great platform to lay her voice over.
Linda is brilliant! wow!! Respect!
It was a good call to dub Linda with the amazing Mercedes. Linda acted the scene great though. Her facial expressions were so iconic.
I appreciate that we can all still appreciate Linda's physical acting even as we acknowledge how McCambridge saved the voice acting
Wow much respect to Linda. She deserved that Oscar. Mercedes should've received an Oscar for VO.
I did not know that Linda Blair's voice was used like that. Interesting ! But the demon voice is more effective more horrifying to me. Image a girl that age sounding like that.😲
I would freak out
Watch Linda blair interview
She was verry shy back then, She must say the lines,
Wow 😳. My sincerest Wows to Mercedes Macambridge for her EXCELLENT DEMONIC VOICE
100% so true!
They're two very different, but equally scary flavors of scary.
Had the movie come out now, they probably wouldn't have dubbed it over just to make it more realistic. And had William Peter Blatty directed this film himself, Regan's voice would be in different pitches, depending on the demon's mood. Much like how he did it for Brad Dourif in Exorcist 3, where the anger he is, the lower the voice is, and when he's happy, it's just the actors normal voice.
Considering Mercedes ruined her voice with liquor and cigarettes for this role, I don't blame her for being upset when she went uncredited. Absolute dick move. Glad that SAG stepped in to give her the credit she deserved.
she didn't want credit until the film became popular. she had in fact been asked if she wanted to be credited while the film was under production and she was on record refusing
@@toomanyaccountsSo that was on her then.
Linda was soo talented!!!
Just goes to demonstrate the contribution of Mercedes McCambridge on this movie. If Blair had not been dubbed this movie would've been laughed off the screen.
jett woodward oh yeah; the dissonance would’ve worked perfectly.
i didn't think they'd ever intended to use her voice.. . blair delivered the lines during filming (for all the obvious reasons), but i thought they'd always planned to dub her..
@jett woodward No way man. Aint nothing scary about that voice
@jett woodward I do agree with you to a certain extent. I think if maybe it was another little girl's voice it would have been creepy because the audience would have known that it wasn't Linda Blair
I think it demonstrates the importance of Mercedes McCambridge's voice and also how good Linda Blair performed. Can't blame her for having the voice of a child.
Excellent performance.
Mercedes McCambridge's voice is good for the movie. But, if there is an actual possession of a child and you hear your own child's voice being possessed, that would scared the hell out of everyone because it will penetrate your heart and soul.
This movie is so amazing.
The “Your mother’s in here with us” sounds creepier with Blair’s original voice. It’s the semi playful, childish tone
I thought exactly the same. That line delivery was amazing by her
1:45 so cute 🤣
@@thegamingcook785wtf..
Well, Linda Blair acting and Mercedes McCambridge along with stunt doubles work gave us a truly memorable role. Also Linda Blair talking devil is just adorable.
What a wonderful movie, under every aspect.
It's almost creepier with her actual voice.
lol
"Your mother's in here Karris. Would you like to leave a message? I'll see that she gets it."
🤣
This is actually weirdly disturbing.
It's definitely more realistic in tone but nowhere near as terrifying or as iconic as what we ultimately got.
I think originally Linda Blair used her own voice while possessed but it didn’t sound natural enough so they dubbed it with Mercedes MacCambridge’s demonic voice which proved to be better.
It was always planned to dub her voice.
Something chilling hearing "an excellent day for an exorcism" in Linda Blair's own voice.
Fuck I’m sick right now and I’m wheezing exactly like that.
The power of christ compels you
Excelente actriz! Una pena que no pudo seguir con su carrera, tenia un gran potencial. Muy profesionao y madura a esa edad..
"AHH IT BURNSSSS" why is it so sad tho
Linda blair é maravilhosa, que talento
The Exorcist what a Masterpiece "
The ambiguity in this scene plays so close to Carras' belief and the audience's suspension of disbelief...it's a moment that frustrated me as an adolescent, but that I now appreciate as a hallmark of the Exorcist's higher level of storytelling that is lacking in so many horror films. It keeps us questioning at the very moment any other film would want us to have fully bought into the premise, that the possession is 'supernatural and real'.
Her voice sounding the way it does doesn’t take away from her physical performance. Though, it was a good idea to change the voice.
It makes the demonic posession more realistic without the demonic voice, which makes it even creepier. XD
if you listen closely, at 1:53 and 3:41, you can actually hear Linda Blair's normal voice when she's screams. It's actually the same in both versions.
Linda Blair's regular voice makes this far, far creepier.
Must agree.
Linda Blair is the USA's best american actress for any scary movie that involves little girls or possessed housewifes.
If I Dubbed Linda Blair's original replaced lines of the demon....I'LL BE AWARDED BY THE OSCARS.
what? how?
Disagree
@@mrtony80 Just imagining things.
I wish to be an actress too.
Playing around with demon voices...
The devil's voice played by Mercedes McCambrige: 😨😨😈
The devil's voice played by Linda Blair: 🥰
Her little girl voice is to sweet.
The change of voice (sound) by Mercedes McCambridge made this movie more scary, along with the acting of Linda Blair with horrific make-up.
This is still fucking terrifying.
Glad they dubbed. Hearing the raspy Smokey old voice coming from a little girl is half reason the film is so terrifying
2:13 - how I sound in the morning when my sinuses are acting up.
love linda shes so lovely
Wow!
Doesn't quite carry the same amount of scariness, agreed? :)
Mercedes mccambridge did all this with raw eggs hard liquor and constant chain smoking
It's scary as hell either way, with the raspy demon voice or the little girl voice
Too sweet with Linda's voice.
Voice actress aside i thought that was a real 😳 you know what growing up wish i had seen this back then just to know it wasnt real!
I think this is better than the dub
Lesson: Force a woman against her Will, YOU are responsible for unleashing THE BEAST!
If they kept her original voice, I think it’d have felt mostly cute at times and creepy at other times.
1:32👀😂😂😂🤣
The it burns part they should let linda Blair voice
yes, that would have made you sympathetic towards the child
💕
Not so scary without the demonic voice.
This is a true story: When I was a kid, Linda Blair's Mom called our house and invited my older brother over to give guitar lessons to her older sister. That was in the mid-60s. About 7 years later, while 'The Exorcist' was being filmed, my same older brother was in a recording studio in NYC with one of Tina Turner's backup singers, recording a song he written; and the song is about Satan. Then about 3 or 4 years after that, we moved into the same neighborhood as Ellen Burstyn. Then about 15 years after, my same older brother found himself invited over to Keith Richard's house-him and his guitar. You know: the guy who co-wrote 'Sympathy For The Devil'. That's a true story, and can't be just a coincidence.
Interesting connection
Honestly, I wish both voices were taken.
They just edit the voice using Linda Blaire's voice.
It still scary cuz i feel like the demon is mimicking Regan.
Maybe it's just me...but I think it's creepier using Linda Blair's voice. The fact that Pazuzu(check spelling) is using a child's voice...
It’s honestly creepier this way.
1:57
She tries to sound evil but it almost lol. This might have laughed at in the theater. Friedkin was right to get Mercedes to do it. A man voice.
Well, in this case, a post-menopausal woman.
It's a great performance alright though it still sounds like Regan.
Charity on passions beat this
That was charity from passions#2
Linda's voice makes it creepy
Scientist say nobody has the gut to watch the whole thing and here I am in Disappoint
It makes her sound like a stroppy teenager 😂
So one of The Exorcist actresses said there was 6 of them that was needed to play this role. So was Linda Blair the Main Lead and how many scenes was she in compared to the 5 others?
I don't think it was 6, but there were stunt doubles for some scenes.
No, there were not 6 actresses, just 1. Linda performed the entire role. There was 1 stunt double used for body shots, and even then, that didn't amount to about 10 seconds of actual screen time.
I'm sure the stunt double is a very lovely lady, but I also think through the years she has slightly exaggerated her role in the actual movie. There are only 5 split second shots of her used in the film. Almost all of her work was done behind the scenes. She was mostly used for the testing of the makeup, testing of special effects and as a stand in for lighting the scene. When it came to the actual filming, Linda was brought in.
There was Eileen Dietz as stunt double as well as the face of Captain Howdy, Mercedes McCambridge for the voice and the contortionist for the Director's Cut spider walk scene.
So that's 4 women involved including Linda Blair.
@@gregklugeI agree. I've seen many interviews with Blair discussing The Exorcist, and she won't mention Dietz' name. It is always "The Body Double" ...
0:33 / 1:41 / 1:49 / 3:28
much better with the child's voice - way creepier
I see the problem

Are you a demon?
Yes!!
HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!
@@Manuqtix.Manuqtix The Power of Christ Compels you, Manuqtix!
It wasnt really holy water though. It was just ordinary tapwater, karras was trying to prove that Reagan only imagined being possessed so it was a trick from his side to see ho she would react. The demon knew this so it reacted as if it were holy water to put more doubt in Karras mind about her being possessed.
@@axelsvensson5234 All demons dislike holy things.

Wait… this movie wasnt real?!?!
The movie itself wasn't real but it was based on a true story.
