Having not watched the reality show, and only being exposed to Jamie from panel and game shows, I always get the impression that he has a pretty decent sense of self. He knows the fortunate hand life has dealt him, he doesn't shy away from a bit of humor at his expense, and he seems to treat others around him decently.
Or he knows how to get the class-obsessed UK to like him. He's been in this business so long, knows how to be non-threatening. He's short, kind of odd-looking, so that immediately makes people sympathetic. Nothing anyone hates more than a good-looking posh bloke. Couple that with some experience in show-business, it's really not rocket science

The way he talked to that guy to calm him down at the end was pretty impressive. I work in homeless services in Australia and there are strict no drinking rules. Because of that we have to lock some people out to sober up and we have to use anything we can think of to calm people down. What he did there wasn't about him, but about diffusing the situation.
The cops have been institutionalised. It’s almost like the DONT know how to de-escalate a situation.

Why do you automatically assume that someone privileged would be an asshole? Privileged people are often decent, because they went to good schools, take lots of holidays and are often stress-free. The middle-class enjoys watching shows where rich people are pigs, but that's because middle class people resent wealthy people. Jamie is such a decent guy. I must admit to tarring all those Chelsea lot as a bunch of stuck up toffs, the missus used to watch that terrible program and I thought they were all over privileged plums. He had a proper look of shock of his face when the geezer was kicking off, the poor guy. But respect to him for doing this. A lot of those from very well off backgrounds seem to be disconnected from the working class (and their problems) but he has jumped into this and even ended up calming the bloke down.
Maybe he just knows how to win you over. He's been in this business a very long time, and on MiC he was always very good at playing the victim. The thing with Jamie is that he's short, skinny and kind of ugly. In the UK, nobody likes a handsome posh bloke, because of typical British class resentment. If you're kind of ugly, you immediately get the sympathy vote. Couple that vote of confidence with a few years of experience as a vlogger, not all that hard.

Screaming calm down will never work when trying to de-escalate a situation… the younger officers will hopefully improve and grow with more experience - clearly a guy with anger issues along with others is difficult to deal with but getting someone on a level would improve things and speed the process up surely?
