How do I get my kid to eat local food they never saw before when we travel? These are normal questions and this video will help parents and travelers deal with their finicky picky eats.

    Happy 8th Birthday to Mr. Liam! We have a more Liam (and some Caleb too) focused video today to give him some birthday love. So please wish him well! and for those of you who commented earlier on this video, I had to reupload it as there was a rendering issue that left the screen black for about 30 seconds. So this is the reupload. Thanks everyone!

    My neighbors (who are both really fantastic parents) had their kids log the local foods they ate on their travels - parents helped them with spelling and descriptions of course. The oldest daughter was adventurous and kind of pretended to like everything while the younger daughter was more honest and made faces when she mentioned certain items. Anyway, they had lots of fun reading off all the foods they tried whenever I visited and would ask about their recent trip. It got to a point where they (the kids) willingly wanted to try local and different foods just so they could add it to their list. Seems like a fun and very easy project for kids when visiting a foreign country while expanding their palate horizons.

    Watching this video, it reminded me of when my family hosted some Chinese exchange students for a couple weeks in the summer when I was a teenager. They were supposed to get the "American experience," so naturally, my dad cooks Chinese food every night.
    No joke, I went about five years pretty much repulsed by Asian food. Now, I'm much better. I love Thai & Japanese food, but I tell that story often to people.

    These are great tips, Mark! I think these tips will come in handy when we’re traveling with my grandma or some picky eating friends.
    And I find that no matter what Quincy and I try, I always find something similar to what I already know whether I’m looking for it or not. I find that every culture has some form of flatbread, noodles, rice dish, lentils, beans, etc.
    It’s always nice to learn how to different cultures prepare vegetables, proteins, etc.
    And it’s even interesting to learn what other cultures enjoy in their ice cream flavors and what different cultures put on sandwiches. Also never discredit fast food. I found that there are certain things that are exclusive to different countries.
    For instance, beef and pork are not allowed to be served in McDonald’s locations in India so people have other options instead.
    Mac paneer anyone? I haven’t even tried that but I know I want to when I go to India next time.
    Veggie strips at an Indian KFC? You can find that too.
    Baby corn and Szechuan sauce on pizza? You can find that at Indian Pizza Hut locations.
    I also like your idea of letting kids choose from the appetizer menu. I think that’s even a handy tip at any age.

    • @RTJames-gq9xg

      The French also do this; exposing their children to all adult foods as soon as they are able to chew or digest. The rule of taking one bite is a lovely one as it allows them a tasting but is not overwhelming or would upset their stomachs if an item isn’t compatible to their system. My mom had the “clean the plate” which often created arguments, long sittings at the dinner table (I can outside the Sphinx) and sometimes getting involuntarily sick. Seems creamed foods and my system are not friends. Lol. Anyway, so awesome to see your kiddos trying things. 👍🏼

  • @kidsperspectivefamilytrave9184

    My friends are the pickiest eaters imaginable! Traveling with them can be frustrating when literally all they ever want to eat is just a small select few things that they're familiar with and can easily get back home. Which can really feel like an anchor when you want to explore and be adventurous, even doing something as simple as trying the local food.

    • @woltersworld
      @woltersworld  Před 5 lety +3

      We have had people like that before with us traveling and we ended up splitting up for meals. Works the same way when people have different food budgets. No offense was taken as we talked about it before the trip. Made things a lot easier

    • @FGH9G
      @FGH9G Před 5 lety +1

      Honestly that is the best solution, decide before eating. Point to where you're going and say "I'm going there, with or without you." That'll spare you all the misery of having that dreadful "where do you wanna eat" argument.

    Great video. We always made our kids try things twice (not at the same time) with a full bite each. Then if they still did not like it they did not have to eat it after that. Funny things was that they usually liked it after the second try. Not all the time, but most time.

    1. Good tip about the appetizer menu. Wish I had thought of that when my daughter was young.
    2. Anything Dad eats, you can eat. That rule got my daughter to eat lots of interesting foods: sushi at age 5, pho at 6.
    3. Picky eaters are not just Americans. Made a Thanksgiving dinner in Korea. Many Korean kids refused to eat the mashed potatoes.

    Oh and how would you maneuver if you don’t eat ANY seafood. No fishes, shellfishes crawlers nope nada nein. I am not sure if many countries are vegetarian friendly. I actually eat a little chicken (no game birds or duck) and a bit of beef (no bison alpaca or buffalo). So yeah, just saying vegetarian has been my go to for eating and stood me well. Just didn’t know if you know of a different approach?

    • @moralhell

      Most european countries have local soda. Try those. Salzburg has Almdudler (a soda with herbs), Rome has Chinotto (quite bitter), in Strasbourg you can try Diabolo (Sprite with different siroups). Just ask the waiter.

      @leekshikapinnamneni4835 Před rokem

      That’s a great point, Mark. Even if you enjoy beer and wine, it’s always nice to mix it up with nonalcoholic options.
      I must admit places like India and Turkey have a yogurt-based drink and I’m sure the other countries have yogurt-based drinks too.
      And out of the fact is that the probiotics in the yogurt can help you digest certain foods so you don’t feel so terrible.
      I’m always down for some hot chocolate any day of the week.
      Play my water is fine as long as it safe to drink. Always ask your server or find out from people. Sometimes you might have friends or just try to observe what others are orderin Mark forgot to mention Irnbru in Scotland.
      If you enjoy coffee or tea or both, that it opens up even more options.
      g enjoy your travels!.
