- In this video I will show you a great book on probability and statistics. This book can be used by beginners but it is not the easiest book, and also certain examples do use calculus. This book is usually used in courses targeted towards engineers with names such as "Statistics for Engineers". If you want to learn statistics or probability and want a solid treatment of the subject, then this is a pretty good choice. The book is titled Introduction to Probability and Statistics for Engineers and Scientists and it was written by Sheldon Ross.

Great video once again I love your content. I also like your motivational videos you used to in the past!
Please make more of them 🙏🏼
I just love your library. I mean i can be there all day studying those books and would not get bored if I have time obviously.
awhile ago you showed an older schaum's outline on statistics -- it looked really good because it had so many problems worked out in step by step detail
currently studying for a bachelor's from turkey on computer engineering. i had my first statistics exam for this semester just 2 hours ago and we've been using this book for the whole course, which, i really struggle to not only self study but also to revise from. a few advices would be appreciated!! love you and your work Math Sorcerer
Not strictly a statistics book per se but I think the "Probability: For the Enthusiastic Beginner" by David Morin is really good for beginners.
thank you so much, i just downloaded it , and as a begginer , the presence of theory questions , and solutions at one place look so complete and understandable , thank you stanger
@@charfractal9441can I get the link to download this book. Sorry if I bother you
I think the best book in this vein that I have used in teaching is "An Introduction to Mathematical Statistics and Its Applications" by Richard J. Larsen and Morris L. Marx I taught a class of well-prepared students in Bejing using it and was able to push them to an almost graduate-level understanding of the foundations of statistics. It could be used equally well to teach the typical prob-stats course taken by engineers and math students not specializing in statistics and data sciences.
What is prerequisite for that book?
@@chaliesmith2136 I think two semesters of calculus would be the bare minimum, but three semesters would be better.
wow, thank you. Just attempted a read on this. Enjoyed it a lot so far. One of most beginner friendly book i've ever stumbled upon
@@Jim-be8sj does it also cover Probability
@@antimatter586 Yes, it has the basics of probability as the first few chapters.
Another good review. However, this review got me to thinking about the categorization of mathematical concepts.
I saw another CZcams video on the various topics covered in the science of mathematics. It is a broad and vast universe of disciplines. I was wondering MW, would you consider making a series of videos that more or less, preview the different subjects that comprise the world of mathematics? I'm sure that I'm not the only one who is interested in learning more about this topic.
Thank you for your dedication to all of us, your faithful viewers.
Probability is a branch of pure mathematics with real world application. Sheldon Ross’ books are pure gold. Get a copy of this book if you desire to learn probability and statistics in an applied context.
we need more books related with computer science, statistics and probability!!
cool video tho
Interesting!
Please do a mathematics for economics book🙏
Sheldon Ross has another book on Probability Models which goes pretty deep into Markov Processes and related topics like Queuing and Renewal. Super cool topic, especially for computer science, and I really enjoyed that course.
where you took that course from
@@ashutoshpadhi2782 University of Calgary
What language was used in your class?
@@biajidejajchowdhury1058 You get the wooden spoon for best question asked here!
@@faithlesshound5621 I asked for the computer language, my friend. Some Professor still use Fortran, some uses C and C++, while some allows Python. It’s an extremely difficult course, and selection of language can make it horrendous.
In college I used the book titled "Probabilty... A First Course" also by Sheldon M. Ross. It is a good book to learn from. Rigorous, but not to the point where it would scare off a first time probability student. Well written and includes solutions to selected problems. Full solution manuals can be found online.
Thank you for the reveiw.
This subject is my favorite one.
The video was great. May the lord bless you. Best wishes from Iran.
Thanks 👍
Thank you very much
Greetings Mr.Professor,
Thanks for the Cautious Overview on Sheldon Ross's Statistics Textbook.
And also for your key note on " Why to Study Statistics ? ".
Take Care, Professor.
With regards,
RanjithJoseph (R.J)
While studying Time Series, I read a book of similar name written by Montgomery, published by Willey. Would you please discuss that book too? Would like to know your perspective on the book.
I am curious what you think about the book "Thinking Geometrically A Survey of Geometries" by Thomas O. Sibley. I have a class next semester using it.
Thank you. Could you recommend books to study Bayesian theory and probablity to advance levels?
In general math people do not like statistic but they do like probabilities or that is what they say. Today things seems to be different because everybody wants to be a data scientist so they need to know statistics. Ross have books on probability, statistics, math models and finance. Many people collect them so they should have something good. I read and study his introductory book on probability and it is pretty good, it has answer to odd exercises.
Hi Math Sorcerer. I frequently look at your you tube videos. Actually I have bought three books recommended by you. Could you recommend an statistics book for Ecologists and Zoologists? I really appreciate your advice. This is because some of the proofs and curves for Ecology are different from the ones in Engineering.
Through your link, would you recommend Jim Frost's Intro to Statistics, for beginners? And price wise as well?
Hey, I have that book! First time seeing one I recognize. Used while getting my IEOR degree at Berkeley.
Edit: As for other probability/statistics books I used in school, looking at my shelf, I also see "Introduction to Probability Models" by Ross. IIRC, there was one more, a more basic probability book for the class taken as a pre-req before using this one, but I don't seem to have it any more.
Can you recommend a book on probability and statistics with lots of practice problems with solutions? Is the Schaum's outline any good?
Stats stud here! There's a cheap print of this book if you're broke college student like me. I used this book solely exercises and 2nd resources. For studying stats theory I recommend "Introduction to Theory of Statistics" by Mood,Gray,Bill, when things get complicated, I go back to this. This book is very understandable, but Statistics Theory is a rabbit hole.
Interesting! Any intersection with Probabilistic Programming?
We studied this book and the writer was Mayer's. Could you possibly review that book
If there are no solutions then it isn't worth buying (I'm talking only in the context of self-learning)
Sometimes if you Google the book you may be able to find a solutions manual online. I have a few math books with either no solution s or only partial solutions Fortunately I was able.to find a solution I ons manuals for them online.
Also it's possible chatgpt can work out the solutions. I've used it for troubleshooting some of my c++ code and it worked. I've also used it to revise and polish some text and that works.
Follow-up, I did some background research. I was able to acquire PDFs of the 3rd 4th, 5th and 6th editions as well as the solutions manual for the 5th. It seems that the solutions work for most of the problems for the editions listed here.. Hopefully this information helps someone that might be interested in acquiring this book.
Do you have any book with a high emphasis on practice problems?
@TheMathSorcerer what's the other book you mention at 9:19 , (Triola and ?)
Do you have another book for beginners at probably
Do one for people who liked the subject in undergrad and would like know more about probanility and statistics
Interesting book and Statistics seems fasnating
The solutions manual for this book is sold as a separate book starting with the 4th edition.
Thank you!
Very good book with many examples ✌🏻
In my undergrad I hated stats and analysis. Then I ended up doing some research on statistical solutions of partial differential equations for postgrad. The universe as a sense of humour.
in the late 90s, i was using A. Leon-Garcia's Probability and Random Processes for Electrical Engineers
I have an issue with the book's solution manual, it's answers are wrong
Would love to see a review on "A Modern Introduction to Probability and Statistics: Understanding Why and How (Springer Texts in Statistics) "
There's an increased probability for that...
Statistics education has expanded enormously in recent years, it's a part of training in all kinds of educational, social and health fields, and also business, especially marketing. People there typically have not studied a lot of mathematics, and some of them are forced to study later in life when they get to a level where they have to make decisions based on data and have forgotten basic algebra. However nowadays a statistics module may be an unwelcome part of their preparation at undergraduate level.
Then there are the concerned citizens (that is, all of us) who are faced with data analyses in their newspapers, and have to make decisions on whether to stop smoking, what to do about the environment, etc, on the basis of data. Advertisers get in on the act too: "Eight out of ten cats preferred Whiskas." Look at what happened during covid-19. Loads of crude data out there, and people pontificating about life expectancy and the like who haven't got a clue.
That's a different market to engineering students, who are part of the maths-related world. There's a whole host of short primers for these other groups which are more or less understandable. Then you you plug the data into whatever horrible software they give you and hope for the best.
I just bought a used copy of the fifth edition for a fairly cheap price - about 20 dollars. The plan is to read the text, watch videos, work out the problems and try to find the solutions to the problems online or use chat.
Wizard, any Chemistry books you would recommend?
The Nuts and Bolts of Organic Chemistry by Joel Karty and Organic Chemistry as a Second Language by David R. Klein. The book by Klein teaches naming conventions, drawings, and functional groups amazingly well. The book by Karty teaches how to push electrons in mechanisms. Both should be mandatory for anyone taking Organic Chemistry. For first year general chemistry I would recommend getting general chemistry MCAT study guides from princeton review, berkeley review, and examkrackers. Some of them have errors and they don't go into extreme depth that your course does, but they highlight fundamental concepts that many students miss. It is best to use them while taking your classes.
Wow, it came with a CD-ROM hahah that was a huge selling point when i was in college :D Actually the more you thumb through this book, I feel PTSD from hand-waving, or like no solutions included textbooks from the 90s creeping up. No solutions? Can't give that an "Excellent", maybe an "Alright", probably a "Fair" since you say the explanations are and examples are good. But looking at this thing, looks like they don't explain stuff or do enough to let the reader feel confident about the material.
will this allow machine encryption of anticipation range analytics superdetermenism machine including schematics with parts list hands on spooky action at a distance aplied quantum math theory
Could we start a github with solutions?
Nice
Great review as always. Have you thought about making a udemy course on mathematical statistics? it would be great.

yesssssssss
That's an excellent book as is his book _A First Course in Probability_
Great, I have this book.
Btw Sir, what do you think is the best book on Intro to Stochastic Processes?
Thx beforehand.
I used the book by Ross for Stochastic Processes. I thought it was pretty good.
@@TheMathSorcerer OK. Thx for your reply 🫠
Please make a video about calculus by howard anton.
"i just have to take a whiff" is crazy
Which Higher algebra book is better the one by Bernard and Child or the one by hall and knight?
I read in a Amazon review that the child&Barnard was better than Hall&Knight's.
I used this, along with an italian one called "Baldi - calcolo delle Probabilità e statistica", for my exam in Probability and Statistic in my undergtaduate degree (triennale) (I'm italian).
I think they are two very good books, at least in the parts that I need to know for being able to pass my exam.
Hai usato la versione italiana del libro di sheldon m. Ross o quella in inglese?
@@ivanabrami9831 the English one
Hii , I want to become a data analytical can you tell me if this book is good or not for my professional bcz I want to make a solid bond with statistics and probability ..
Does this book contain material for multivariate probability?
Yes it does
Any body wanting a really hard book should look into Olav Kallenberg's Foundations of Modern Probability. It should keep you busy for 3 years.
Although way too advanced for me at this point, I bought a copy of A First Course In Probability by Sheldon Ross, which I saw in a used bookstore because it was so cheap. Now, I at least know something about the author.
If you google the book's name you'll come across the instructor's manual for the book which does contain some solutions. Happy learning
I wonder if they sell a teachers edition, usually that will have the answers.
I am a statistician and I suffer a lot in my job. I didn't take all calculus series and linear algebra. I know I shouldn't be doing this job but I am having extreme imposeter syndrome whenever I need to explain stats concepts to researchers. I know the applications and programming. I bought calculus 1 online course but I'm very intimidated by math
Hmm check out the triola book. It’s the most popular book in the US for stats it has very high lvl explanations of certain concepts. It’s for beginners and it’s cheap if it’s used. Good luck my friend!
Hey, you don't need to buy in an online course. You must checkout Professor Leanord on CZcams. He has all calc 1-3 and many other math courses
He is one of the most renowned math professor on CZcams
4 months late, but would also recommend Statistical Rethinking by McElreath for a lighter, non-mathematical treatment of stats for research.
maybe the solutions are on the dvd ?
I want a real analysis book can you review please sir...
What about cessela berger?
Most Sheldon Ross books have solutions manuals, This may not, but I'd be surprised if it didn't.
Alot of statistics becomes measure theory. There are some good books on it, like the one from jun shao.
I have no love for Ross!! We used the general probability book intended for math majors, and I loathed it
Concerning axiomatic probability theory, Kolmogorov said it, it's a matter of chance as whether I believe it, and 50/50 chance of settling it.🤓
Four out of five student dislike statistics; however, the remaining 20% have a 0.25 probability of liking it after the first two weeks. 😊
5:42 the hardest part in this book is if u want to learn regression it is a very very big topic especially in machine earning
btw Solution is spoiling people
Other pros: it has a proper Kindle edition! Although it is very expensive. 😢
awww!!
That's what I hate the most about US-based math/CS books, they usually (not always though) don't have solutions to problems, hence they're not good for independent learners. That's a deal breaker for me.
I probably won't read this book. I calculated the probability.
👌
Hey, that's my college text book
Btw, might be a great inclusion for people who want to pursue Astrodynamics.
I know two much easier books on probability that I'll comment below. This book was too difficult for me.
Ross was at UCLA before UC Berkeley
The bad news, peeps, is if you want to move beyond lower management, you NEED statistics at this level.
(:
Triola book is too basic. I do not recommend except for non-STEM majors
surely you are joking ,Mr. Sorcerer!
Most of what you learned in mathematics will be useless in Statistics. You are almost back to square one.
You forgot the close the { 😅 3:19
what are you talking about?
Sir what's your email address so that I can communicate with you.
Hi sir what do you think of the study material of( mit opencourseware ) the multivatiable course for helbert gross
I haven't looked at the study material, but I should! I love the videos though they are fun:)
Any body wanting a really hard book should look into Olav Kallenberg's Foundations of Modern Probability. It should keep you busy for 3 years.
