Awesome for you to do a power pop video response, Emma! Wow, thank you for all the praise on my video! :-) Once again, I'm reminded that I need that first Cheap Trick album on vinyl! Very cool to learn about the Cheap Trick's love for the Move. Love to see you show The Beat's LP, too! It's not featured enough in the VC! We're both on the hunt for Black Vinyl Shoes! I think I may have only seen a copy once, but it was more than I wanted to spend at that moment. Yay, Nick Lowe! Well done on your top 5, Emma! I enjoyed this! :-)
The Omaha Introvert Thanks Hanna!!!
My favorite Power Pop band is The Outfield, especially their album Play Deep.
Great upload Emma!! Bleu ~ Redhead is an absolute must must must must listen. A totally unsung genius of more fairly recent power pop. A stunning masterpiece of an album.
The Knack' s second album is really good as well. I think Heaven Tonight is more power pop than the debut. great video
I bought The Beat when it was first released and still think it's one of the best power pop albums ever. Paul Collins still is writing some great hook laden songs. A very obscure album you might be able to find on Spotify ( I know it's on Tidal) is "Have an Idea" by The Heats. They were a Seattle group that opened for the Knack when the latter was touring that album. They didn't last long. It's another power pop rariety.
The Cars, Pat Benatar (sometimes), The Babys, The Kings, The Records (great power pop band) Starry Eyes, Teen-A-Rama. How about The Who? They had some great power pop tunes early on like Pictures of Lily, I Can See For Miles. Yes, the Move was an early purveyor of what would become power pop. But also The Flamin' Groovies from San Fran, "Shake Some Action". Of course, Badfinger, -- Baby Blue, Come And Get It, No Matter What, all early power pop anthems. some early Blondie stuff like 11:59, Hangin' On The Telephone, One Way Or Another. The Romantics, What I Like About You, One More Chance. Heck, I'd even include Alice Cooper on the list, maybe further down, I'm 18, School's Out, Got You Under My Wheels, Cold Ethel. Ok, that's all I could think of off the top of my head ----for now.
This was a great video Emma, really enjoyed you digging down deep into Rick Neilsen's influences with Roy and Todd and showing that deep power pop lineage. Very interesting about their late 60s trip to the UK! I'm interested to go give that Shoes a listen. It's very interesting how you mentioned 1979 as almost 'peak power pop' - think you're onto something there! Cheers- Dean
Super awesome video on Power Pop! Great video Emma!
You should check out Jellyfish, Sugarbomb and The Records. Great stuff
Great response video. Hanna ‘s video was an awesome deep dive into the genre.
Well played! I have been singing the praises of and trying to turn people on to The Beat since that album came out - which is long before you were born.
Thanks for watching!
Very cool showings Emma! I wanna see that IL rock hall one day when it opens!
Thanks Mike! Definitely swing on by to IL when it opens up! I think it's gonna be a good one. You gotta check out the record stores in the Chicago area too.
Eight Vinyl Low you already know I’m down for that!
Great picks Emma! I also LOVE that S/T Cheap Trick!
It's a favorite. Thanks for watching!
Lots of interesting information here for Power Pop fans. Good video. The first Cheap Trick album doesn't get enough attention. I love it. Heaven Tonight seems to be the object of a lot of approval among Cheap Trick aficionados. In many ways this makes sense. After all, it is also considered their top release in the opinion of rock n roll critics and listeners. I think there is a meaningful and convincing consensus there. Nick Lowe! Heck yes. Anything related to STIFF records is usually on the top shelf for me. And My Sharona was an instant classic, even though I had to listen to it from the AM radio in my car. It was great driving music for me in my first year as a licensed driver. NAZZ has been neglected for decades, but this happens quite often with regard to bands identified with cutting-edge genre pioneering. Those on the frontier of things are sometimes left behind despite their ability to imagine the future.
Emma, thank you for sharing and its perfectly awesome for you to geek out who you want to geek out over. Depending upon how much you want to deep dive out on U Tube or in your area vinyl shops, I would suggest some other bands for you to discover that you didn't mention here but are perfectly awesome examples of the genre: The Plimsouls (Zero Hour, Everyday Things, Now and the most well known, A Million Miles Away), Badfinger, Raspberries, Mighty Lemon Drops, The Pleasers.
Thanks so much for watching! I've heard of a handful of those bands that you shared. I'll check out the others that I'm unfamiliar with.
@@EightVinylLow the later two... Inside Out by The Mighty Lemon Drops and I Know What You're Thinking Girl by The Pleasers I found to be incredible earworms.
As much as I do love Cheap Trick, the title for the best goes to Big Star for me. Radio City is an incredible album, and I think "September Gurls" is *the* definitive power pop song.
Again, no hate for Cheap Trick. I do love 'em.
Enjoyed the video!! Cheap Trick are crazy!! They really freaked my Dad out in 79 I think it was. They were on tv playing dream police lol, He was in his 40s probably. Enjoyed it my friend
LOL ... Nielsen's mannerisms weren't your dad's style I'm guessing?
Check out Blue Ash, their great debut album from 1973 went completely under the radar.
I agree. "Let There Be Rock" is one of the great power pop songs of all time.
First time viewer. Good choices. I was a big Cheap Trick fan in the 1978 to 1981 period. Also owned Get the Knack and Labour of Lust. I would recommend Marshall Crenshaw's 1983 debut. Very melodic and well sung. Also: Raleigh NC singer Marti Jones - one of the best female singers in pop. Her husband is Don Dixon - producer of R.E.M.'s early records. Her 1985 album 'Unsophisticated Time' is a pop gem, as is her follow-up 'Used Guitars'. Some recommended tracks from Marti: 'If I Could Walk Away', 'Show and Tell', 'Real One', 'Tourist Town'.
Thanks for watching! :)
Great video. Love your Top 5.
I’d add:
The Records debut (US Version)
Well, I'm late to the party, but I have to say, I wholeheartedly agree: Cheap Trick is the ultimate power pop band! And Shoes are in my top five, too. Maybe it went without saying, but the Beatles are clearly also a huge influence on both. Anyway, well done. Keep up the good work!
Great top 5! I would have picked several of the same albums myself. I love the fun facts and I didn't know about the IL HOF. Pretty cool stuff
Shoes, Spongetones, Greg Kihn band, Blue Ash, Smithereens, Hoodoo Gurus, Beat Farmers, Go-Gos, Plimsouls, Josie Cotton, Bram Tchaikovsky, Marshall Crenshaw, Phil Seymour, Little America, Elvis Costello.
Hi Emma
Big fan of Power Pop, started getting into when it emerged in the late 1970's. Though in the UK it is more narrow. Nick Lowe for instance would hardly ever be called Power Pop. Anyway agree that Cheap Trick are one of if not the main player. The first album is fantastic. The Shoes are brilliant. My favourite power pop album is by Pezband 'Laughter in the Dark'. I am sure you most know this band as they are from Chicago. Also a shout for Dwight Twilley. Very good and informative video.
Gary
Ever heard of a band called SHOOTER.. From 1978.. Cheers.. Totally spot on bout Cheap Trick.
I completely agree that Cheap Trick's debut may be the best power pop album of all time. Having been a Cheap Trick fan since the late 70's, I still think this is their best album. "Hot Love" is just a ferocious burner--one of the band's best moments. If you're unaware of it, you may want to seek out Screams and their self-titled album from, I think, 1979. Very Cheap Trick-influenced, and VERY power pop! You may also get into The Raspberries--one of the first bands, to my knowledge, to be tagged "power pop".
Power Pop is alive and well today with the Lemon Twigs, check out “In My Head.”
That song rips off Pure Imagination from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory 1971.
What do you think of Diesel?
Plimsouls, The Scruffs, Big Star, Raspberries, 20/20, Phil Seymour
Yes!!! I should revisit this topic again and do an updated video.
Great t shirt. I agree that Cheap Trick is the ultimate power pop group. 🥰
Thanks Melinda!
Please Mrs. Henry, Mrs. Henry Please! Regarding CT, maybe Hanna's #1 was equally influential??? also, you need to slide Terry Reid in there too. Illinoize bands that jumped on the CT train....you could add Pezband and Off Broadway, or not, cause finding the records might prove equally difficult.
Good one Emma. I’m still going w Nick Lowe’s Pure POP for Now People/Jesus of Cool as the very best power pop album 🍄🎸🥁😎🐇🚀🐩🐦🥜🦄
There is something special about Cheap Trick, they took power pop to another level and each album is a variation of that. You could do a power pop top ten best albums with mostly Cheap Trick and Big Star albums but of course other bands are important too.
True that!
What about badfinger and xtc?
🤠 Shoes ❤
The rubinoos are awesome too.
Nice video. If you haven't already (and you seem super knowledgeable), check out the LP "Beat & Torn" by The Spongetones, or their fine Best Of... CD.
wizzard really like no one else, perfect phil specterist sound . i would add nick lowes pure pop for now people , every great sound he could get even does a great song saluting the bay city rollers .a monster record.
Hi Emma , You sound like a well versed lawyer with your advocacy of the great Cheap Trick ! Look out for crazy Al Jorgensen at Illinois HOF. They paved the way , Big 🌟 # 1 Record LP & Dwight Twilley 45 " I"m On Fire " Cheap Trick covered Big 🌟 ! See Ya !
I go through phases where I love power pop. It's a shame that the band's who write catchy, melodic tunes which are well performed and sing, don't get much commercial success. I'd find it hard to pick a top five as I get attracted to the different revivals, starting with Badfinger, The Raspberries and Big Star to the late 79s bands you mentioned all the way through to 99s artists like Matthew Sweet and Jellyfish. In my head, I also tend to merge power pop with jangle pop (another great set of videos by Hanna).
roy wood is genus almost perfect. the move i saw and have always loved, you cannot listen to a move album and think thats what they souned like because their music could change with everly release , my favorite is shazam just a great album that spotlights there versitality. also wizzard roy wood s 70 s band
“Taxman Mr. Thief” is one of the most under-rated (and very Beatlesque) power pop tracks of all time
Totally agree. Taxman is one of my all time favorite songs.
Hi. Have you checked out XTC? If not, do it NOW!!!!
What's your favorite XTC album, George? Mine is Black Sea.
Hi, great choice with Black Sea. If I had to choose, I'd have to go for English Settlement. Although Skylarking and Mummer are close behind.
Nice pics. CHEAP TRICK are the best.
AGREED!
Hi Emma, you mentioned that you would like Shoes -- Black Vinyl Shoes. I was at a used record store today and unfortunately they didn't have it. They did, however, have Present Tense. Since that album is on your want list I went ahead and picked it up for you. There was another album called Tongue Twister. I didn't get that one since it was not on your want list. I will send you the Present Tense album in a couple of weeks. Cheers, Jim.
Jim Davies Hi Jim! Wow, thank you so much!!!! Present Tense is the other album by them that I’m very familiar with. Never heard of Tongue Twister before. Again, thank you very much for thinking about me! 😁
Check out Joe Jackson’s first two albums, Look Sharp! And I’m the Man.
Will do - thanks for the recommendations!
@@EightVinylLow I also highly recommend the only album by The Wigs, “File Under: Pop Vocal”. The original vinyl is impossible to find, and even the Not Lame CD reissue from a decade ago commands a hefty price, but the LP is on Spotify.
I’m a first generation California power pop fan from the old days, and never heard of The Wigs, who hail from the Midwest, IIRC. Their album is in my top 10 power pop albums of all time, it’s that good. I like it better than the Knack, The Shoes or even, dare I say, Cheap Trick (all of whom are great). The Wigs album will make you crank up the volume, dance around the room, or if you’re in your car, pound the steering wheel.
We would definitely be friends if we met.
WHAT ABOUT THE HEATS HAVE A IDEAH SEATTLE BAND
No one ever mentions the Romantics. Why? Their first 3?albums are f definitive.
🌩️20/20🌩️
Why pick those who plagiarize from the Kinks.
You forgot another Illinios band, Off Broadway. Granted they were more of a regional success than national. A little surprised you didn't have any Dwight Twilley/Phil Seymore on your list. I know they are from Oklahoma but still.
Be biased. Rep your bands.
Eric Weinbender ✌🏻😎
Here's a challenge : Next video, you cannot say yes or no or Cheap Trick.
