Sony and Microsoft turning down the motion control is like when Blockbusters turned down buying Netflix
RIP Blockbusters
CreepsMcPasta OH MY GOD IS CREEPS
CreepsMcPasta Eh, they'll be fine without motion controls.
CreepsMcPasta Nintendo focusing on the motion control is like when Sony developed Betamax.
RIP Betamax.
Seriously, though, lol. Motion control is a dead gimmick.
Pudding Dashboard I agree, however if VR gaming becomes more mainstream, then motion control would be very useful.
Pudding Dashboard And yet for a dead gimmick, Nintendo did it better. And still does it better.
i like how SONY rejected the motion control idea then copied it years later.
Luis Valdivia XBOX too.
But xbox had a camera, not a motion controller
purepower777 It's still motion control related.
Luis Valdivia irony
TheNimbious You've become your own new species your so stupid...
Sony and Microsoft turned down motion control, then copied the Wii when it got popular
*slow clap*
@Varchas Ravishankar pfff you call that portable? you cannot call the whole system portable if only the controllers are portable, most if not all controllers can meet that standard.
Ikr, go figure...
Hey, a controller that splits into 2 remotes...
Switch hype
Right. the more and more I watch old Nintendo Consoles DYKG the more i'm like "woah the switch goes waayyyy back"
Nintendo doesn't go way back... Is just that they were AHEAD of its time.

I don't care what people say, Wii is still better than the Kinect.
Cartoon High Everything is better than the Kinect
Even Microsoft ditched the Kinect.
i take the kinect and I shit on it!
+Cartoon High The only thing the Kinect is good for is dancing games... I love Dance Central, but the Wii dancing games have a chance to be completed by only moving your hand.
did you know that the kinect was made for testing the techneology to make a virtual reality headset

Did you all know, that the Wii has a crap load of amazing games on the system, but it seems like the majority of people just want to ignore them and just focus on the shovelware that came out, unlike for the ps2 where they seem fine to ignore the obscene amounts of shovelware on that system?
Too true.
+gamereviewsss and you couldn't name one...
+Pandemic Xenoblade Chronicles
+Pandemic Super Mario Galaxy
Super Mario Galaxy isnt a shovelware, it was just hyped by the fans because it introduced sometihing new, that being gravity/planet system. Nintendo didnt even have to shovel it down your throat.
Why is Nintendo always supporting things that Microsoft and Sony turn down? There's motion tech and Bayonetta 2. What's next, Nintendo's going to accept powerful alien technology to use in their consoles while Sony and Microsoft decline?
Seems Nintendo knows how to approch innovative ideas
Creepopolous Because Nintendo is so rich that they can have flops for several generations of consoles, and they would still have more than enough money to continue making games. So they can take much more risks than the 2 other companies who don't focus on gaming entirely.
Creepopolous From my experience, Nintendo likes to be more innovative, they're not always out there to make the most impressive game, but to make the newest, and more importantly most fun. A good example is graphics, Nintendo games have a HUGE variety of graphic styles, even games within a series that are released a year apart can look vastly different from each other, because they're trying out new and different styles, rather than trying to improve their old ones.
What's with Nintendo not supporting things that Sony and Microsoft support that carries them to success like DVD and Online
because Nintendo is a gaming company that thrives off building gaming consoles and games for those consoles. Nintendo is vertical in the industry in that they work on everything to do with the game from hardware to final product, while Microsoft and Sony delve beyond the gaming industry and into other areas horizontally, but gaming isn't their sole focus, thus they have independent companies doing more work for their games then they do people in the Sony or Microsoft building, as opposed to the majority of Nintendo's teams working under the same roof. The two strategies have their pros and cons in that Sony and Microsoft reach audiences across multiple platforms, but Nintendo has the advantage of not depending on another company for a project to be finished and they don't drop highly anticipated projects nearly as often because there's better communication.
In an alternate timeline: Shortly after 1999, the motion control sensors were implemented into aircraft worldwide. Pilots standing on balance boards and flinging their planes into televisions across the globe.
Also 9/11 didn't happen, the terrorists missed when one of the remotes failed to sync.
Holy shit
That goddamn startup music dropkicked me back in time to like 2008 when I got my Wii for Christmas solely for SSBB

so philips still has a grudge against nintendo for preventing them from making anymore terrible zelda/mario games
+Classy Mudkip I have a theory.Sega bribed Philips to make the games terrible.
+C- Maker that, or Philips just sucks at making games
+Classy Mudkip Probably that, they're not even a game company.
+Classy Mudkip +Johnny Appleseed, Actually, the Mario and Zelda CD-i games were developed by Animation Magic, not Philips.
And also, Phillips made it clear that the CD-i was not meant for gaming.
Imagine you saw a guy controlling a plane with a wii remote.
And he forgot to buy motion plus...
As a Dutch speaker, I apolagize for Phillips patent trolling to the world, they have done this so often... it's pathetic.
H enryuuki I forgive you for that. I will *NEVER* forgive you for the CDI games!
CD-I games pretty much CREATED the youtube poop joke.
COnsdiering the CD-I games are non-canon and have created HOURS of hilarious youtube schtuff, I think that one isn't nearly as bad.
H enryuuki I have a Phillips electric razor. Its very nice. They should stick to appliances.
***** And my Philips Headphones _also_ work great. Really, it just seems like what gaming is to Philips is the equivalent of what Love Hotels are to Nintendo.
H enryuuki Okay... Good point. The games were still *really* bad tho.
Still wish we would see the 64DD games resurrected in some capacity and brought back since there was actually quite a few neat things on them
Agreed.

Lol i heard that but i didn't think twice about it
So Phillips sued Nintendo for the patent of the motion controls and the system (Wii & Wii U). Hmm, wonder what Pepsi has to say 'bout that Phillips logo.
(;
The wii is simply, glorious. It helped carry motion controls into the mainstream, revive the company from the slip up that was the gamecube, and was in my opinion, better than both ps3 and xbox 360. While the other 2 tried too hard to be the ultimate gamer machine, the wii just wanted to be a console that the whole family could enjoy and it certainly did just that.
As much as the Wii sold I still consider it to be incredibly underrated. So many people owned one just for Wii sports, and wii fit. Recently I discovered some incredible games like Xenoblade Chronicles, Metroid Prime Trilogy, Zelda Skyward Sword and more. I'm still using mine to this day.
Justin ™ Nowadays I just use mine for Netflix and Homebrew.
The Metroid Prime games don't really count since they were originally on GameCube lol
cabsk8er7 Metroid Prime 3 wasn't
cabsk8er7 Plus they were remakes to make the games more enjoyable like how the 3ds has majoras mask and ocarina of time and those count has 3ds games too
Lexi Belle Remakes are basically a repackaging of the game. I just consider them unethical.
The Wii is an interesting topic to look back on. On the one hand, it sold insanely well. On the other, it's seen as almost a failure by gamers. It was cheaper then the other consoles, so it could be bought easier; it was inferior (in terms of hard stats) to the PS3 and 360 in almost every way. It's innovations are something even Microsoft and Sony 'had' to follow Nintendo on eventually; putting innovation ahead of improving might be one of the reasons the Xbox One and PS4 are outselling the Wii U right now. It had some really fun games that I know I will remember for year to come; it was bombarded with party games and mini game collections or ports of games from other consoles (with mixed results).
But even though the PS4 and Xbox One are outselling the Wii U at the moment, Wii U arguably has the best library of games (for now). It will be interesting to see how things progress over the next few years, especially with Nintendo's rumored new console in the works.
Luis Illesca It really is. There are so many different factors and oddities involved with that generation of consoles. How can something be considered such an absolute failure and a roaring success at the same time. Which is true, or which is MORE true? Topics like this are some of the reasons I love gaming history so much, I could talk about Wii vs PS3/360 for hours.
Luis Illesca The reason that is the case is because the Wii was designed to target as large of a consumer base as possible. Nintendo has always been this way with it's "all ages" attitude. It's a positive slogan, it paints them as a caring and trustworthy company, etc. but also just makes shit tons of money.
Whether you're too young to understand what dial-up ever was, if you're balding middle-aged man there barely knows how to interact with Google, or if you're anywhere in between, you can swing a controller around.
That is a MASSIVE consumer pool.
Microsoft/Sony has always chosen to design their products for the "gamer," the people that want engaging challenge, depth to game mechanics/gameplay, pushing better and better hardware to higher and higher limits, competitive play etc.
The word has changed since then because now everyone with a phone is a "gamer," so perhaps it's better to specify that Sony/Microsoft appeal to "hardcore gamers."
These people reject innovation at the cost of gameplay (motion controls), reject simplistic "party games," prefer more powerful hardware, they reject the idea of playing "muh Zelda/Mario/Metroid" rehashes with gimmicky "innovation" forever (except CoD purists).
Yes, their is some great games out there for the Wii, lots of their games (especially in previous generations) have successfully done well with "software over hardware" approaches, and the hardcore fans are FIERCELY loyal. However, the fact of the matter is that consoles that market to average Joe and his wife/kids are pretty much always going to outsell the relatively smaller (and divided, imagine if there was only JUST Sony/Microsoft competing with Nintendo) community of people with more specific and harsher standards.
Up until the beginning of the last generation, that was pretty much ALL there was in terms of the gaming demographic. Girls looked at you funny if you told them you like to play shooters with your friends for fun, or thought you were a child if you told them you played Nintendo. "Gaming" used to be nerdy, now it's the largest entertainment industry. The casual gaming market has exploded out of the ground (mobile phone gaming, app gaming, freemium gaming, social network gaming). And it is, arguably, what it ruining the industry.
Instead of companies competing to pump out the best games, each corporation is hopping on the "it's for everyone" marketing strategy. It just makes way more sense financially to sell to everyone as possible. This, of course, means you have to pander to the lowest denominator. Evidenced by Sony/Microsoft picking up motion controls, making their newer consoles built around social/casual gaming, Xbox One's HEAVY focus on TV, tons of app games being featured on their respective libraries (E.g. Angry Birds), refusal of original I.P.'s getting the green light because of the insane budget necessary which isn't worth the risk, riding every successful franchise into the ground (Like Nintendo has done since 1985), large focuses on apps and media for everyone not specifically interested in games, tons of games being measured in "hours of gameplay (ironic given how many hours are spent watching cutscenes)" instead of just aiming to have a good game that will last the test of time and will still be fun ten years from now.
Last generation, the argument could be made that Nintendo at least had complete games. Short, simple, shallow maybe, but DLC-free. Now not even Nintendo is proud enough to deviate from microtransaction bullshit, selling the same game twice on different platforms (Smash Bros.), truly re-hashing games (3DS Zelda games), it's all seriously going to shit...
But lots of Nintendo fans love to strike this argument where bigger sales as an inferior machine means something whimsical and great, when all it really means is that Nintendo has the stronger marketing edge.
It all really comes down to opinion in what is better.
TL;DR: Sales =/= quality.
TurtleShell 720 Beautifully said.
With the Wii, It had a lot of hidden gems that sadly most people didn't even play.
SagBag Apparently, the Wii U is the only 8th Gen Console that can actually handle almost all of its games at a roughly solid 60fps - personally, I think it gets 'slagged off' way too much.
Did you know that Wii also had twice the amount of TEV pipelines, and pixel pipelines?
Too many people think Wii was just a GCN overclock, but more than clock speed was changed internally- Wii was essentially a GameCube with no bottlenecks for fixed-function, 480p gaming.
I don't know what it is about the wii, but it's my favorite console. Call me a filthy casual, but I love Mario Kart, Cooking Mama, and Wii Sports so much.

Casual games are not my favourite thing, however Nintendo's business practices are genius!
Dragon - mil50010 Most of the games on the Nintendo Wii/DS platform are casual. There are titles that are not, especially games like super smash bros which is an e-sport. But your comment doesn't detract from what I said, just adds more perspective.
@Dragon - mil50010 jeasus so many good games is too much for my brain
Yeah that Wii U what a great idea
@@Supersonicboom7 i hate when somebody says that nintendo is for dumb and little stupid kids and for casual gamers While Xbox and play station are for “real men” is just fucking annoying..I mean the vídeos are for everybody and the Grand majority of games that are in Wii are rated for E and that means that anybody can play it doesn't matter if you are Xbox or ps fan or a “gamer” or a casual gamer the videogames are for everybody..

I Love how both Microsoft and Sony turn down the motion controller, but then they were like "wait this actually makes money"
I still has a Wii and I will keep it until it will catch fire
+Theduuuude Just clean out the vent from time to time and you'll be fine, at least it wasn't like the early 360 set up where it overheated like crazy and even crashed the system often. There was also the disc destroying fun that the 360 loved to get involved with. My buddy and his friend bought one when the 360 was still new and just by going up the stairs, the damn thing didn't want to work. People bitched about the system's problems and it took months to even years for Microsoft to not only acknowledge the problems but also finally agree to fix them. It was 2009 when they finally had started putting out consoles with none of the early issues that came standard to every system and it was just in time for the RE5 limited edition, hot damn - sexy red box.
Rest in Peace, Mr. Iwata.

Japanese businessmen like to listen with their eyes closed (think I read it in Liar's Poker by Michael Lewis, a book about Wall Street etc. in the 80s - but you can google it and find plenty of backup for this). So stating that to suggest that he was disinterested or rude is likely incorrect, it's more so that they are listening intently and trying to concentrate on what is being said (but it's a cultural quirk that you might not be aware of).
Oh, I thought he was being a douche especially because he turned it down
Most of Japan's culture is sort of opposite to western. E.g. They don't greet by shaking hands or touching.
Ponimaju Closing his eyes is one thing, but asking if the tech could be made for a ridiculous 50 cents feels like he was purposely asking an impossible price range to shut down the pitch. I'm pretty sure low balling is universally rude in business.
Krogoth04 Fair enough; he may have been trying to be rude (then or later), but I was just saying that it was inaccurate to suggest that closing his eyes meant that he was being rude (because for the Japanese, it's a sign of listening intently).
Ponimaju Yeah, I got you on that. I didn't know about that aspect until I read your comment.
It's funny how Xbox and Sony initially turned down the idea of motion controls but then made their own spin-offs of it once they saw how popular the Wii was.
+Logan Haney its funny how they turned down the idea picked it back up when the wii worked both flopped and only playstation was smart enough to drop it again before the next console generation.
And they were both way worse (imo).

Microsoft turns down motion control and then makes the Kinect after seeing Nintendo have success with it. Don't take any risk Microsoft, just copy others but make it different enough.
John Koski See also: the Playstation Move.
John Koski yeah, they copied it because it sold well... but only later they realized the only reason it sold well was because literally ALL parents thought it was a fun family system... then played the stupid wii sports and wii fit games for like 3 months and then the wii just stood there next to the tv collecting dust for years... this is probably accurate for millions and millions of households :)
raafmaat a ton of people used it for Netflix streaming
John Koski The kinect was a great tool for everything other that gaming.
EsechavaHD you may not need a controller with the kinect, but it is horrible innacurate. trying to do realtime motion capture with only the front angle and no dots on a person is gonna turn out horribly no matter how hard you try, at least with current tech.
R.I.P Iwata we will never forget you :(
one of did you know gaming's best videos. that moment when the then-chairman of Nintendo "barked something" and bought part of that Gyroscope company, he changed video games forever.
I liked using motion controls in two situations, a quick button you can instantly react to, (Like the spin attack in Super Mario Galaxy) and the curser for whenever I had to type stuff in. Any other games that used more complex motion controls weren't played on my Wii, unless I could turn them off or play with a different controller... And is why I have only like 12 games for it...

It's so stupid that such a good idea was ridiculed by the Gaming Community and ruined by Microsoft. That's why Motion Gaming is dead now. The Wii is my favorite system and the hardest system to find. I was on vacation and found it at a Gamestop.
AKUNJIG not sure how Wiis are rare, they sell for less than 150 $ on average(in quebec anyways) and theres tons of them in canada
Joe McGee The first year it came out there was a shortage of systems to sell along with the PS3 so you'd have to call up stores ahead of time to see if they have them. And Ebay was flipping Wii's like crazy! I kid you not my neighbor bought hers for $800 in holiday 2006!

Everyone who hates the Wii has something in common. They have only used it once, or for a short period of time, therefore not realizing the potential it had, and more importantly. I have A LOT of memories with the PS2, of course PC's are better etc, yet the PS2 is still a great console, its the fun that counts.. not the specs..
Nope. I think the Wii sucked and I played lots of games on it. The problem was that I disliked or hated games that used the motion controls.
I only really enjoyed the Wii when I played games like NSMB where you could play with no motion controls or very little use of the notion controls.
Give me NES, SNES, GC, N64 or Wii U over the Wii any day
Well, why didn't you try more games, like Xenoblade, or something?
Gamesta100 Whats the point of a game console? To have better numbers on paper, or to give kids fun and memories?
MegaBeastout901 Not really sure but that could have been during the time I was sick of RPG's. Or maybe by the time I bought the Wii Xenoblade was hard to find? I bought the Wii probably 3 or 4 years after release. When was Xenoblade released?
***** I still have a wii but I hate on it because of the motion controls. There are a few games that do it right but the majority are made worse because of them. This was unfortunate to me since it was the biggest selling factor of the wii.
This brings back sooo many memories especially the begging music
Is mayonnaise a Nintendo franchise?
No, Patrick. Mayonnaise is not a Nintendo franchise.
+Gage Frederickson raises hand*
+Thenintendochannel64 Horseradish is not an instrument either.

+Preston Benally No, it's a gender.
If you do some digging you can find alot of really great games on Wii. I got about 35.
which one's do you have/recommend
But beware of the shovelwares(there are a lot of them)
+C Robinson I agree completely. A lot of people say that there are very few third party games on the Wii that are good. Fortunately, this is not the case. A couple of fair examples are Okami, Mini Ninjas, Sonic Colors, Epic Mickey, Zach and Wiki, Xenoblade Chronicles, No More Heroes 2, the list goes on.
Is that including the multi-console games like the Lego games?
Cool
The Legend of Zelda!
The Gyropod Prototype reminds me a lot of the switch, mainly based around how you can detach the remotes and stuff...maybe nintendo decided to use that as the inspiration for the switch.
company: im gonna sue Nintendo
Nintendo: *so you have chosen death*
The Wii gets so much hate, but the GameCube...doesn't? Strange, the revolutionary one that sold millions of copies is the hated one...
The only reason the GameCube isn’t hated on that much is because it has Melee...
Lynk Force you can play gc games on the Wii tho
They're both amazing consoles.
"LOLOLOL TEH XBOX 360 WUZ SO MUCH BETTUR THEN TEH KIDDY WII"...
..is what KIDS THEMSELVES say.
+thesquigglyhacker This is true.
this generation in a nutshell
sigh..... they dont care about classics
Kids these day, respect nothings
I swear that's how I feel. I honestly don't know why other kids enjoy gritty shooters.
+thesquigglyhacker At least we dont have to use fucking TV remotes.
Apparently the Wii was also supposed to play dvds but the idea was scrapped
I love how the idea from the switch controllers detaching wasn't even new and they've had it in mind since the Wii
Sony and Microsoft afraid of inovations while Nintendo is the only one who takes a shot at it? Meh, nothing new.
Mii maker is on the 3DS and Wii U while the Mii CHANNEL is on the wii
2:52 I think this idea was brought back as the concept for the switch
More Zelda content is always welcome. It is a good idea with the fact a new Zelda game is right around the corner.
The Wii, Nintendo's giant middle finder to the hardcore gaming audience.
ssssssstssssssss For the of people hoping Nintendo's console would once again become the preferred platform for 3rd-party developers, the Wii was a giant middle finger to all of them.
I honestly felt the Wii was the second most "hardcore" console of the three, with the Xbox 360 being the most "casual". Not to say that it is a bad thing, it's just how I saw it. I enjoyed all three platforms
Benjamin Franklin It contained the most shovelware, garnered the largest audience, was marketed to the mainstream harder than the PS3 and Wii
Benjamin Franklin The 360 was debuted on MTV, for goodness sake. The 360 also have the larger library, but they both have a similar number of first party games. Third party games don't make a console more or less hardcore.
Pan Z Depends how you look at it. Sure many of their games appealed to the masses, but with the insane about of downloadable titles from systems such as Master System, Genesis, NES, SNES, N64, Turbo Grafix 16, Turbo Duo, Neo-Geo and arcade cabinets, the Wii probably had the most hardcore library available.
the best thing about the wii is that it could play gamecube games >:P
The Wii was such a beautiful console especially when I got the Mario Red Wii for Christmas that came with Super Mario Bros for the Wii. I had a black and white one before that with so many games with so many different memories that came with it.
I remember getting the Wii three weeks after it came out. It was such a big deal that my parents called my school, I was called to the office, and the principal put me on the phone to talk to my mom. Of course literally the next day we went to Disney World and couldn't play the Wii until a week later.
