      Creepopolous Because Nintendo is so rich that they can have flops for several generations of consoles, and they would still have more than enough money to continue making games. So they can take much more risks than the 2 other companies who don't focus on gaming entirely.

    • @Whofan06
      @Whofan06 Před 9 lety +34

      Creepopolous From my experience, Nintendo likes to be more innovative, they're not always out there to make the most impressive game, but to make the newest, and more importantly most fun. A good example is graphics, Nintendo games have a HUGE variety of graphic styles, even games within a series that are released a year apart can look vastly different from each other, because they're trying out new and different styles, rather than trying to improve their old ones.

    • @Sjono
      @Sjono Před 9 lety +1

      What's with Nintendo not supporting things that Sony and Microsoft support that carries them to success like DVD and Online

    • @Whofan06
      @Whofan06 Před 9 lety +35

      because Nintendo is a gaming company that thrives off building gaming consoles and games for those consoles. Nintendo is vertical in the industry in that they work on everything to do with the game from hardware to final product, while Microsoft and Sony delve beyond the gaming industry and into other areas horizontally, but gaming isn't their sole focus, thus they have independent companies doing more work for their games then they do people in the Sony or Microsoft building, as opposed to the majority of Nintendo's teams working under the same roof. The two strategies have their pros and cons in that Sony and Microsoft reach audiences across multiple platforms, but Nintendo has the advantage of not depending on another company for a project to be finished and they don't drop highly anticipated projects nearly as often because there's better communication.

    The wii is simply, glorious. It helped carry motion controls into the mainstream, revive the company from the slip up that was the gamecube, and was in my opinion, better than both ps3 and xbox 360. While the other 2 tried too hard to be the ultimate gamer machine, the wii just wanted to be a console that the whole family could enjoy and it certainly did just that.

  • @sagbag

    The Wii is an interesting topic to look back on. On the one hand, it sold insanely well. On the other, it's seen as almost a failure by gamers. It was cheaper then the other consoles, so it could be bought easier; it was inferior (in terms of hard stats) to the PS3 and 360 in almost every way. It's innovations are something even Microsoft and Sony 'had' to follow Nintendo on eventually; putting innovation ahead of improving might be one of the reasons the Xbox One and PS4 are outselling the Wii U right now. It had some really fun games that I know I will remember for year to come; it was bombarded with party games and mini game collections or ports of games from other consoles (with mixed results).
    But even though the PS4 and Xbox One are outselling the Wii U at the moment, Wii U arguably has the best library of games (for now). It will be interesting to see how things progress over the next few years, especially with Nintendo's rumored new console in the works.

    • @sagbag
      @sagbag Před 9 lety +17

      Luis Illesca It really is. There are so many different factors and oddities involved with that generation of consoles. How can something be considered such an absolute failure and a roaring success at the same time. Which is true, or which is MORE true? Topics like this are some of the reasons I love gaming history so much, I could talk about Wii vs PS3/360 for hours.

    • @DemonFang72
      @DemonFang72 Před 9 lety +21

      Luis Illesca The reason that is the case is because the Wii was designed to target as large of a consumer base as possible. Nintendo has always been this way with it's "all ages" attitude. It's a positive slogan, it paints them as a caring and trustworthy company, etc. but also just makes shit tons of money.
      Whether you're too young to understand what dial-up ever was, if you're balding middle-aged man there barely knows how to interact with Google, or if you're anywhere in between, you can swing a controller around.
      That is a MASSIVE consumer pool.
      Microsoft/Sony has always chosen to design their products for the "gamer," the people that want engaging challenge, depth to game mechanics/gameplay, pushing better and better hardware to higher and higher limits, competitive play etc.
      The word has changed since then because now everyone with a phone is a "gamer," so perhaps it's better to specify that Sony/Microsoft appeal to "hardcore gamers."
      These people reject innovation at the cost of gameplay (motion controls), reject simplistic "party games," prefer more powerful hardware, they reject the idea of playing "muh Zelda/Mario/Metroid" rehashes with gimmicky "innovation" forever (except CoD purists).
      Yes, their is some great games out there for the Wii, lots of their games (especially in previous generations) have successfully done well with "software over hardware" approaches, and the hardcore fans are FIERCELY loyal. However, the fact of the matter is that consoles that market to average Joe and his wife/kids are pretty much always going to outsell the relatively smaller (and divided, imagine if there was only JUST Sony/Microsoft competing with Nintendo) community of people with more specific and harsher standards.
      Up until the beginning of the last generation, that was pretty much ALL there was in terms of the gaming demographic. Girls looked at you funny if you told them you like to play shooters with your friends for fun, or thought you were a child if you told them you played Nintendo. "Gaming" used to be nerdy, now it's the largest entertainment industry. The casual gaming market has exploded out of the ground (mobile phone gaming, app gaming, freemium gaming, social network gaming). And it is, arguably, what it ruining the industry.
      Instead of companies competing to pump out the best games, each corporation is hopping on the "it's for everyone" marketing strategy. It just makes way more sense financially to sell to everyone as possible. This, of course, means you have to pander to the lowest denominator. Evidenced by Sony/Microsoft picking up motion controls, making their newer consoles built around social/casual gaming, Xbox One's HEAVY focus on TV, tons of app games being featured on their respective libraries (E.g. Angry Birds), refusal of original I.P.'s getting the green light because of the insane budget necessary which isn't worth the risk, riding every successful franchise into the ground (Like Nintendo has done since 1985), large focuses on apps and media for everyone not specifically interested in games, tons of games being measured in "hours of gameplay (ironic given how many hours are spent watching cutscenes)" instead of just aiming to have a good game that will last the test of time and will still be fun ten years from now.
      Last generation, the argument could be made that Nintendo at least had complete games. Short, simple, shallow maybe, but DLC-free. Now not even Nintendo is proud enough to deviate from microtransaction bullshit, selling the same game twice on different platforms (Smash Bros.), truly re-hashing games (3DS Zelda games), it's all seriously going to shit...
      But lots of Nintendo fans love to strike this argument where bigger sales as an inferior machine means something whimsical and great, when all it really means is that Nintendo has the stronger marketing edge.
      It all really comes down to opinion in what is better.
      TL;DR: Sales =/= quality.

      +Theduuuude Just clean out the vent from time to time and you'll be fine, at least it wasn't like the early 360 set up where it overheated like crazy and even crashed the system often. There was also the disc destroying fun that the 360 loved to get involved with. My buddy and his friend bought one when the 360 was still new and just by going up the stairs, the damn thing didn't want to work. People bitched about the system's problems and it took months to even years for Microsoft to not only acknowledge the problems but also finally agree to fix them. It was 2009 when they finally had started putting out consoles with none of the early issues that came standard to every system and it was just in time for the RE5 limited edition, hot damn - sexy red box.

    Japanese businessmen like to listen with their eyes closed (think I read it in Liar's Poker by Michael Lewis, a book about Wall Street etc. in the 80s - but you can google it and find plenty of backup for this). So stating that to suggest that he was disinterested or rude is likely incorrect, it's more so that they are listening intently and trying to concentrate on what is being said (but it's a cultural quirk that you might not be aware of).

      Gamesta100 Whats the point of a game console? To have better numbers on paper, or to give kids fun and memories?

      MegaBeastout901 Not really sure but that could have been during the time I was sick of RPG's. Or maybe by the time I bought the Wii Xenoblade was hard to find? I bought the Wii probably 3 or 4 years after release. When was Xenoblade released?

      ***** I still have a wii but I hate on it because of the motion controls. There are a few games that do it right but the majority are made worse because of them. This was unfortunate to me since it was the biggest selling factor of the wii.

      +C Robinson I agree completely. A lot of people say that there are very few third party games on the Wii that are good. Fortunately, this is not the case. A couple of fair examples are Okami, Mini Ninjas, Sonic Colors, Epic Mickey, Zach and Wiki, Xenoblade Chronicles, No More Heroes 2, the list goes on.

    The Gyropod Prototype reminds me a lot of the switch, mainly based around how you can detach the remotes and stuff...maybe nintendo decided to use that as the inspiration for the switch.

      I honestly felt the Wii was the second most "hardcore" console of the three, with the Xbox 360 being the most "casual". Not to say that it is a bad thing, it's just how I saw it. I enjoyed all three platforms

      Benjamin Franklin The 360 was debuted on MTV, for goodness sake. The 360 also have the larger library, but they both have a similar number of first party games. Third party games don't make a console more or less hardcore.

      Pan Z Depends how you look at it. Sure many of their games appealed to the masses, but with the insane about of downloadable titles from systems such as Master System, Genesis, NES, SNES, N64, Turbo Grafix 16, Turbo Duo, Neo-Geo and arcade cabinets, the Wii probably had the most hardcore library available.

    I remember getting the Wii three weeks after it came out. It was such a big deal that my parents called my school, I was called to the office, and the principal put me on the phone to talk to my mom. Of course literally the next day we went to Disney World and couldn't play the Wii until a week later.
