Agreed. Stan Saki is so nice and a pleasure to meet every time I see him. You won’t meet anyone nicer, except Walt Simonson. This book is a steal at $39.99.

Usagi Yojimbo is a creator-owned comic. Stan Sakai holds the rights to the franchise.
So it's up to him where he gets it published? Because if that's true, why not collect the original seven stories from Fantagraphics at Dark Horse. It seems like something is going on with the Copyrights.

There was the Samurai Warrior computer game starring this little samurai bunny. That was my only contact with Usagi Yojimbo.

The day I met you and Maddie and Amanda at the Frankfort comic convention was when I got my first Usagi collection, volume one if the Dark Horse Saga Omibuses in soft cover. Now I just need one more omnibus, volume 7, to have the whole Dark Horse Saga omnibus. Just got volume 8 in the mail today in fact. Figured I would grab 8 while it was still 16 bucks as all the Dark Horse collections seem to be going out of stock at Instocktrades, especially the later volumes. Volume 7 is still on Amazon but is full price (24 99). I actually picked up the first volume after hearing you talk about it on this channel, Omar. I've also got all five issues of the IDW color series so far and have it on my pull list. There are no collections at IDW yet and I'm kind of surprised to see Dark Horse releasing this cover collection. Wonder if IDW only has rights to the new issues? Like how Fatagraphics still owns the earliest books which I still need to get the box set of.
Based on this press release about Saki coming over to IDW, it seems like IDW is going to republish Usagi stories going back to the beginning - 'IDW will curate a fully-colored graphic novel library of the complete Usagi Yojimbo - all 35 years of its grand storytelling, plus new stories to come!'. So yeah, I'm also curious about the publishing rights held by Dark Horse and even Fantagraphics. I'm confused about the Usagi series. There's so many different options and collected editions available (LE Vol 9 is now available for preorder) so I'm reeeally hoping you can do an overview of what's been collected thus far. I know it'd be a lot of work but I'm sure some of us would only want to collect the TPB versions and some only want the limited edition HC's both would be greatly appreciated. EDIT: I see now that the Vol 1 Limited Edition HC is available for preorder again, does that mean they're reprinting the series?

oh man Usagi at heart, but my soul says TMNT.
IDW's January 2020 solicitations have a listing for Usagi Yojimbo Color Classics #1 (color interior + BTS stuff), which "collects the original early issues of the acclaimed long-running series, NOW IN FULL COLOR!" - I assume it's only a matter of time before they give it the thick TPB treatment a la TMNT Color Classics.
I know that they are doing comics, but my goodness that is going to be years before collections are made of the colored versions.
@@NearMintCondition Probably more than a decade (!!!). DC's thick Hellblazer TPBs started in 2011 with a twice (or thrice) a year schedule and Vol. 21, published last July, is only up to #249.
