I am a treasure hunter. So in addition to metal detecting, I go mudlarking at sites in New York City. Think of mudlarking as metal detecting without a metal detector.

Being a farmer in the uk lots of my fields have buttons in them because people working the fields had coats on when it was wet and they ripped the buttons off while picking, sowing etc
Your point about areas that are covered now were probably opened at one point is the reason I hunt in the wooded areas of the park...where I found a nice sterling silver spoon 3 weeks ago!!!!
The old button you found You thought was a washer. I have found them along Oregon trail.
Apparently they had a lot of clothing that was falling apart, but no money.😅
I suppose so. Some of those buttons are HEAVY!
Back in the 19th century everything had buttons. The collars, cuffs, shirt pockets, shirts their pants and even their underwear had buttons. Then on top of it some underwear had a hatch door in the back that had buttons. I think the purpose for that kind of explains itself lol. It was colder outside way back in the days especially since the outhouse doesn't have a fireplace and it was well below 0 out and snowing.
People may have been cash poor but they were certainly button rich
If you ever way watch Time Team from the UK, they find old mosaic floor tiles and building foundations in the middle of fields and pastures. What was a small village is now farm land and no one knows.
Hi Merrill. 😀. We have another class room teaching moment. 🙂. Your mouse moving around heavy objects wheel item @18:40 isn't one of those. 🥲. It is infact a wheel from an old caster like those on the bottom of arm chairs or tables from the Victorian era. 🙂. I have found several over here across the pond. 😊.
Im totally into the historic relic hunting..... and the prior research involved.... We have some old military forts/camps out west also... You have about twice the years of historic metal, as we do on the west coast
Love all those Buttons! Also nice 1845 copper. Congratulations Merrill
Thanks, Merrill, a very enjoyable video! I liked the editing and comments, and putting the two hunts together.
I've watched your channel for a couple of years, and have really enjoyed it lately. I think it is due mostly to your focus and effort, but amaybe it also just took a while for a mid-west guy to understand a northeast guy. Great job, keep it up!
“I am happy with the buttons.” Then, arms crossed in front of chest, “He is not happy with the buttons.” We try to be nice. 🤷♀️ Anyway, this was one of my favorite parts. That, and the large cent discovery. 😊
Hey Merrill, the Deus II Update is out. Where are you? You are the one guy we really need to hear from about this update. Hope you get one up soon.
Bill
BUTTON-A-RAMA !!! Merrill thanks for another fun video. I STRESS to my son the importance of research & imagine how a site was laid out before. He thinks I'm old in my way of research, thinking & ideas of areas to shoot (he's 13 and I'm 57), but he CAN'T explain how he found an 1876 Seated Dime along with 17 Common Clad in an area I took him to. Like your Large Cent in this video.. Thanks and Happy Shooting....
Great anecdote Space Fury!
I deliver flowers to long island and I love all the old buildings and park lands
Beautiful video! The history is the point. Thanks, brother!
This video was very enjoyable. Food for thought as well. Really cool. Thx.
I recently watched a guy clean some stuff with clr 50/50 water/clr and cleaned all the stuff I had in my collection that was metal. I let them soak a few hours. It was amazing I can now read the names on compacts, lipstick holders, etc. etc.
Yes! When I tumble I use CLR. A Very diluted amount,
Good day ring master .hope you have a awesome day my brother
Thank you! You too!!
Nice old copper and a big batch of buttons. It shows people were there! It looks like you and the Manticore are beginning to click.
Great video Merrill and good tip to try and discover what was on the ground years ago, don’t take it at face value. Next you need to do a “how to read the landscape” video. To find things, you need people to have lost things, so where were the people at? Andy
Great video thank you!
Hey Rob!
love me some historic aerials, i wish they had the live dot though like google maps to see where u are exactly.
What a pleasure Mate cheers
Nice hunt thanks for sharing!!!
Thank you!
BOOM!
As always Merrill you've managed to put together a entertaining video hunt. You certainly had this on all buttoned up!!
When ever I can I look for old maps and pictures of my town to help me find things.
Great video Merrill, I am always entertained watching your videos. 👍👍
Hey big guy, wow! I loved the 1845 one cent you pulled out of the ground, congrats dude! I was wondering, how far back do those old buttons date from? I wonder... I gave Jeff a thumbs up for discovering such a great spot to metal detect in, sharing can be very rewarding, also, it's a sign of true friendship. I had a blast Metal Detecting NYC, some great finds today. I love this Fun Channel and I am looking forward to the next... Thumbs Up to ya! signed, Greg the Egg. Inclosing, hey Merrill, what's with the dark circles around your eyes big guy, are you okay! are you alright!
I’ve always had them. They get worse with lack of sleep. I work at school during the day and detect in my spare time and make videos in the evening. I feel ok.
I'm itching to get out there and hunt. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you!
When you stop for a moment and think about it, human migration has taken people into areas that today we would not normally have imagined people to have been so you almost can’t rule out any location for metal detecting. It’s finding evidence of human migration across this great continent. Every location has some type of evidence of incursions by people over a long period of time. Now granted indigenous peoples may not have had iron in their earlier generations but with the coming of Western European s and trading between cultures then there can be important evidence of contacts between cultures. Isn’t this what History is about?
Merrill can I get an honest opinion. If you had to chose which detector you would buy and the price isn't an issue. Knowing your detectors would you choose the Manticore or the Deus II. And ignore thinking that the Manticore may get updates or you may learn it more. You ran the Nox so you have some experience with Minelabs. Just go off what you know you can do now. Which detector would you buy RIGHT NOW if you had to decide between the two machines
Deus 2 by a hair over the manticore

Thank You I was hoping you were gonna say that.
Oh boy relics, good job good video
It’s a bouton
YEssir!
Awesome video Merrill
I don’t understand why you guys don’t have many farm fields my boy got a 1850 seated Quarter a few days ago and 2 days ago I got a Barber Half 14 inches in my front yard it was on edge and it was a whisper the Legend has been on fire running the latest up date field mode m1 and if the ground is wet then we use M3😊
Great finds guy
People back then dropping coins would set you back a little l would think. Perhaps a fight took place or just plain carelessness. Thanks for the hard work you do.
Great hunt Merrill, nice being on the old. Most of our woods in our area were old farmland at one point
Yep I just pulled a bucket list seated half dime along a river bank with mine 1847
Please talk of best ground penetrator or scan that is good for gold prospecting
Thanks for vid.
I enjoyed your hunt thank you for sharing.
Merrill, so happy right now, I’ve been using the vanquish 440 for about 2 yrs now. Nokta Legends were on sale+ the discount code… I got a legend for 378.85. Felt like I got a steal for that Machine. what are your thoughts?
You did! That is absurd!
Nice hunt 👍👍
Thank you!
Awesome finds! Very interesting place to dig.
Good morning Teacher! I want to learn about wireless heads, and what is the maximum range of separation? I want to drag a head around with an RC car.. I even found a RC truck equipped with a camera. With a wireless head I can strap the control box to my arm. FYI, I'm in a wheelchair.
The Tenement Musuem is one place I would love to visit in NYC. my favorite history of NYC is the immigrants. I love your opening talk with the old map and pictures and history background. I have a NYC pictorial history for one of my boards on Pinterest
what do you teach?
Thank you Cathy! Right now, I teach Business: www.businesseducationny.com/
In the past I have taught Art, Social Studies and SPED.
I think the wheel thing is for a treadle sewing machine
Fantastic 👍
Great video. I'm really learning a lot from your channel!
HI MERRILL love from WV, usa.
Enjoyed the video!
Love this video sir Merrell
Good video my friend 👍
I watched a bunch of your videos 😁👍🥰 and then went to your web page to check out your detector specs and recommendations and couldn't see any of the numbers because the youtube link to the videos covers up all of the spec numbers... Of course I hit the "talk to me" button and it wouldn't let me answer without giving you my email address and everything else that I don't use these days... lol.. Just a heads up... Yes I did try rotating my screen... I figured that you would like to know because I just closed your web page until it gets fixed.
Thanks,
Reed
Hello my friend, are you finding any coins that are not a perfect round signal on the 2D graph?
That large cent you dug from what I can see did not look perfectly round. I sometimes skip some signals when I am tired of digging after 3 hours of detecting. I probably need to stop doing that.
Yes! Target Trace is hit or miss. It does not perfectly clarify. This is especially true with coins on the side and when a coin is in mineralized soil or around other items.
@@MetalDetectingNYC Thank you for the reply. I will have to change my ways. Keep up the great videos.
Fill dirt brought in from the old button factory.
I'm Canadian but know US coins better if I had to guess looks like a classic head
Is Rumba the same as Trolling?
I just like this!
Also needs more stars wars decor
Greetings from Brazil 😅😂

Beautiful One Cent 👍🏽
Good detector❤
Nice video, how you clean copper
Wifey peeking around the corner trying to catch you talking to girl friend 😂
Another great video. Where are your gloves?
Hey, will be an X-Terra Pro test soon?
The gold ring was under the horse shnit.
Very nice video❤❤❤
You need to dig down 10 feet or so lol
Was the horse pile a large scent?
Welcome to Button city
Let's go 😊
Large Cents Are Large!
❤❤❤
Some relic hunters wear pantyhose to prevent ticks climbing up their legs, but you better ask the wife first. 😉
All I need now is a Visa 🤩
