How RRR's Moving Train Stunt Was Shot | Movies Insider | Insider

  • Action scenes set on moving trains happen over and over again throughout movie history, but they're rarely filmed on actual moving trains. When they are, they have to be meticulously planned, from the train derailment in "Lawrence of Arabia" (1962) to James Bond's fight on top of a real moving train in "Skyfall" (2012). There are a variety of techniques to simulate thrilling train action. For a deadly train explosion in "RRR" (2022), Surpreeze used a scale model of a train that could be pulled across a bridge and blown up. For another shot, the VFX studio was able to launch a full-size train car safely into the water by mounting it to a flipper. Scenes that take place inside or on the exterior of a moving train will have to create constant motion. The continuous forward movement and turbulence you see on the train in "Snowpiercer" (2014) and on the subway fight in "Spider-Man 2" (2004) were done by putting train cars on top of motion platforms. When Tom Cruise climbs on top of a high-speed train in "Mission: Impossible" (1996), the crew utilized a wind machine blowing 140 mph winds at him. Train movement can also be created without any real movement. In "Bullet Train" (2022), Brad Pitt and Aaron Taylor-Johnson were frequently on a static soundstage set. With drone footage of the passing Japanese countryside on LED screens outside the train's windows, the looping images and passing lights made the moving-train illusion feel completely real.

I envisioned all sorts of (complex) scenarios about how it could be achieved in safe, predictable manner... not once did it occur to me just suspend it from a track hidden above the ceiling, have tiny little breakaway parts for the ceiling as the suspension arms pass through it, paint out the suspension arms in post.

    For a film that apparently put a lot of work into making that train crash look accurate, RRR messed up a bit by putting GATX onto the tank car, which you can see at 2:00. That’s a railroad reporting mark for the General American Transportation Company, an American tank car leasing company. The car also appears to have American trucks (aka bogies). For a film set in India and focused heavily on Indian nationalism, they did a pretty bad job of making an Indian train.

    • @MrSkinnynerd03
      @MrSkinnynerd03 Před rokem +2

    In real life, that exploding tank car flying sideways off of the bridge would've taken most of the cars before and after it off of the bridge with it, demolished (at least) that section of the bridge, and seriously injured - if not killed - the kid as it all came tumbling down on top of him and trapped him underneath a mountain of steel and other rubble. And the director goes so far as to call it "close to" a real train accident 🙄

    • @soumyadityaagarwalla1517
      @soumyadityaagarwalla1517 Před rokem +4

      As much as I like real stunts, sometimes they are misled.. like in F9 I was pissed.. there they used a mobile huge magnet attached to a car, to pull a car through concrete from a parallel road 10 meters apart.. even the strongest magnet on earth won't pull that off, and it is not at all mobile (watch veritasium's video), it literally consumes like 20000 kw power.. they did the scene with pistons rails etc and did it in 9 months..
      Also there was a scene where 2 muscle cars grabbed the front of a 3 section armored truck from the sides and applied brakes.. apparently it and the slight slope of the road was enough to topple the 30 -50 ft truck .. like seriously??
      What good is that to pull of stunts realistically if the event is not even realistic ??
      This is why I love Tom cruise and Nolan ... They get the details ...

    • @Cyberguy42
      @Cyberguy42 Před rokem

      The point of using miniatures is that you automatically get some aspects of realism. Placing actual explosives on the miniature tank car could have delivered a realistic looking shot, yanking it with a rope did not. The result is just not believable from a physics standpoint given the enormous rotational inertia of a tank car.

    That tank car would have lost its trucks (the wheelsets) as soon as it rolled off the bridge as RR cars just sit on them with gravity. They're not actually connected other than the brake lines, which rip out when a derailment causes them to separate.

  • @kc4cvh
    @kc4cvh Před rokem +1
