finaly, now i can wear my dress without covering my open back zipper with a jacket or something!
This was one of the most relatable things I've read this week! 😂
This is exactly what I was looking for! I had the idea to replace my dress’ zipper with a lace back just like this for my brothers wedding. Thank you for being a life saver
Wow, this is such a good idea, perfect if the dress doesn't fit anymore or the zipper is broken. Thanks for sharing this :)
Never before had I considered just replacing the zipper. This is especially helpful to me for garments I make myself because to me zippers are about the same level of horrible as sleeves. Thank you so much!
Ugh, zippers are awful. I feel like they never end up looking the way I want. I'm glad this video might have given you some ideas!
This was such a big help, Melissa! I’m glad you ended up making it.
Thanks for the Amazon link! And another great video ❤️
High five for the vid, girl!
This got me creating!
Thank you!!
I'll post when finished!
Thanks Hat & Hem!

Simple and informative. THANK YOU!
You're welcome! I'm glad it was helpful!
Great Tutorial!
Thank you!
you make it look so easy!! i cant wait to try it on my dress
You've got this! :D
Thank you so much for this video - I bought the same corset kit and needed to see how to do it!
I really hope this video helped you!
Thanks love! This was VERY helpful for me! I appreciate it. I subscribed and look forward to watching your future greatness! Xoxoxoo
I'm so glad this is helpful for you! I hope you enjoy my other work!
This is so helpful!!! I have a dress that I love and can’t seem to part with and I’ve been looking to do this to make it for me again and this is by far the most simple way I’ve seen!
I'm so glad this will be able to help you!
Nice and simple, great help, thank you!!!
My pleasure! I'm glad it helped!
This is way easier than I thought it would be!
I'm so glad! I felt like this was one of those projects that seemed really difficult but really wasn't that bad once you got into it. I'm happy to hear you think so too!
I loved it. It was just what I needed
I'm so glad to hear that!
Absolutely fantastic
Thank you!
Thank you for sharing this method its been so helpful. I guess I could even add my own loops to some boning that I already have to customise. You given me some great ideas. Thank you so much from Derbyshire U.K
I'm so glad! I hope it worked out for you! I'm so sorry it took me this long to see your comment.
Very helpful . Thanks
This video is soooo helpful! I am thinking of switching from a zipper to lace on my wedding dress and this saved me so much times
I'm so glad this helped you!
Perfect. Just what I was looking for. Have a beautiful dress with an ugly zip. Decided to remove the zip and do a corset back. Am in the UK but found the kit on Amazon from a different Seller in about 30 colours!
I'm so glad to hear that! I hope you find the perfect color!
This was very helpful.. thanks so much!
I'm so glad! Thank you for letting me know!
This is sooo helpful. One of my bridesmaid dresses has become a bit tight and rather than having to replace it we can change the zipper back to a corset and save the dress. Thank you this was very informative and easy to follow.
I'm so glad this helped you! This video has gotten very popular this year and I'm pretty sure it's all because of delayed weddings! I've done this alteration for several bridesmaid dresses over the last year. Best of luck altering the dress!
This video was very helpful..... Thanks 😊
I'm so glad it helped you!
I like it!!!!!! Clever idea.
Thank you!
Very helpful thank you
I'm glad :)
Awesome thank you so much ❤
My pleasure!
Go Melissa!
Superb
Very helpful. I'm doing this for my daughter's bridesmaid dress for her best friend's wedding... it was bought pre-pandemic and the wedding was postponed. She's now 8 months pregnant! Hopefully the dress will fit much better than it doesn't now :)
I think that's happening to a lot of people right now! Congratulations on the upcoming addition to your family!!! How exciting!
Thanks. I very like
thank you
Well you just saved my favorite EGL dress from being left on a hanger for the rest of my life! After my 3rd was born my ribcage had been pushed out a couple inches and burando has no give if you're not tiny. 😅
Just baught a cheap prom dress that I'm altering into my wedding dress and literally had the thought this morning that changing my back to a lace up would help make it more whimsical. Thank you for the tutorial and handy kit link!
I'm so glad this could help you! And I agree, a lace-up back does make it more whimsical!
And congratulations on your upcoming wedding!
This may be totally out of the blue, but I couldn’t get past 5 seconds of this video without noticing how endearing & beautiful you are! You have such a sweet face and a kind voice. 💗
Awww thank you so much! I'm not going to lie, I had no idea where this comment was going when I saw you couldn't get past five seconds, but this comment absolutely made my night! Thank you again!
I went ahead and ordered a dress when I was younger because the shop did limited productions of the style. I’ve mature more and am bigger than I was then. This video was helpful in adding a lace up.
I've had the same thing happen to me more than once! Thank goodness for clever solutions like this!
Hi … thanks for your video. I know how to make & install a corset bk but sometimes you don’t have time to do it from scratch… gals that go mos … not trying their dresses on, gain wt & can’t zip up. Anyway this is quick & easy. Again thanks for sharing. Katie
Oh, definitely! This is the quickest way to do this that I've found. Just because you can do all the extra work doesn't mean you want to
Wow thanks for the tip
I hope it helps you!
This is amazingly helpfull, thank you! I'm making my own dress but get extremely bloated so my waist, hip and chest mesurements are not in line at all. Hopefully this will make my dress more comfortable and I can still eat at the party!
I'm so glad this was helpful! I hope you were able to eat all the food you wanted!
I loved how simple and straightforward your tutorial was ! I had this jumpsuit that I bought and the zipper was terrible to begin with so it eventually broke. Instead of replacing the zipper, I wanted to make it a corset back. It currently is form fitting tight and I want to have the option to loosen it up more as well. This video was very helpful !!
I'm so glad this could help you! I really try to make my tutorials clear but also a little fun. Have a wonderful day!
@@HattoHem when you apply the bone loop, should the dress be turned inside out ?
@@Oneasianpersuasion No. You want to clip or pin it on right sides together because you're going to turn it to the inside of the dress. Just make sure the edge of the boning you're lining up with the edge of dress doesn't have the loops on it.
@@HattoHem Ookay, thank you for responding back !!! I'm working on my jumpsuit right now :)
@@Oneasianpersuasion you've got this!
Thank you for making and posting this educational video. Can I do the lacing replacement on a skirt?
As long as you like the look, I don't see why not?
My Halloween costume came with a broken zipper and it's the day before, this is actually a life saver
Oh my goodness, I'm so happy this helped you!
There's a dress whose zipper I am struggling to get unstuck so this was my plan. I just haven't gotten around to it. Maybe today I'll start seam ripping the zipper out
Best of luck! I hope it goes well!
Thank you so much, it was so helpful!
I’m just wondering, can you do it without the modest panel or would that cause a lack of support? I made one of my dresses strapless, however it no longer has support to stay up-so I’m doing a lace up at the back of it.
That's a great question! This should absolutely work with a strapless dress. I used this on dresses with off the shoulder straps and it worked perfectly. Best of luck!
Can you use this same method but without removing the zipper? Trying to figure out how to convert my wedding dress myself!
I would think so. The only issue is you might see the outline of the zipper through the back of your dress. It really depends on the fabric of the bodice. It might be worth trying. Also, congratulations! I hope you have a beautiful day!
Great video!! I did this with my daughter's wedding dress & her flower girl's. Now (10 yrs later) I need to alter her 5 yr old twin daughter's flower girl dresses, as the wedding will now be next Nov (Covid) and the dresses fit them perfectly right now! All I can find on Amazon is Women's Corset kits. I'm guessing they will be too "big". The dresses are, also, burgundy. So I need a child's size (6->8) in burgundy. Any suggestions as where to purchase? If not, I guess I can get some burgundy satin cording. Lots of fabric to cut off the bottom of the dress, so no problem creating a panel.... just hoping to save some time with the loops. Looking forward to watching your video a few more time before I take a deep breath & start cutting!! THANKS!
I'm sorry the wedding has been postponed. Knowing how quickly kids can grow, I'd be shocked if those dresses still fit next year! The Lacis Corset Kit that I used in this video can be cut down with just normal scissors. I'm...vertically challenged so whenever I use it on my own clothes, I usually have to cut it to size. You shouldn't have any problem buying a women's size and cutting it down. Best of luck! :D
@@HattoHem ah, ok. I'll check it out further. Not the MOB....my daughter's sister-in-law is getting married. Thanks for the reply!
Thanks for your reply last year. I couldn't find a "Corset set" that I could guarantee the color would match their dresses (burgundy), so I just bought the supplies (thread & cording I was able to match at Hobby Lobby & Walmart). Removed the zipper at the waist line & put 5 loops up to the bottom of the upper lace of the dress. I left the top button, so there is a "keyhole" between the Corset area & top button. Looks nice. Also, another bridesmaid is now pregnant, so I did the same to her dress. I just used the extra material I had to cut off for hemming, to make the "privacy panel". Thought you might like to hear an update. If you are interested I can send a "before & after" photo. Thanks for your video.
What if Ball Gown (thrift store find) has a built-in tulle petticoat ...
I have to check again if it's attached to waist as well or runs up to neckline (which will be a bigger pain). Should I stitch rip out as I remove zipper & just cut away near waist if that's where it ends or zig-zag/blanket stitch it just below waist and sew to waist seam then cut it out? That way bodice area has a liner? Thanks great video, appreciate You sharing it.
Hmmm...I'm honestly not sure. I would say the best thing would be to attach the lace up bones to the same layers the zipper was attached to. If you feel the need to attach more layers, you can secure them by hand. It might be easier to make additional adjustments if you baste the additional parts first, try it on, then properly secure it if you're satisfied.
I have no idea if I answered your question in a satisfying way, but I do hope you find the solution that works best for you!
@@HattoHem Thanks, I was thinking same but the underskirt/petticoat base fabric where tulle is attached to is only Nylon. I guess I'll to cut/stitch rip it out & make a new liner for bodice to add strength for lace up panel addition & find a non-stretch Nylon or acetate for base. My Mom & I redid 1st wedding gown - scrapped the bodice, made a new one with Princess seams and inserted crystal organize to front panel to add some appliques from discarded bodice but kept the long sleeves (took out tulle puff shoulder pads & adjusted gathers) I lucked out with finding same white dye tone as the gown (which I changed into V drop-waist) We did such a perfect job & hemline was straight but forgot that I changed shoes to lower heel ...so had idea to use silk flower posies matching my fresh flower bridal bouquet & added a couple of offset tucks to raise hemline (& thankfully crinoline was already the right length) It looked great! All this was done with one hand in cast - I fullishly did some Spring skiing & Mom had slipped on ice & had a couple of cracked ribs which we didn't know til afterwards! Thankfully Cast came off week b4 wedding & Mom felt better by then too (Aunt came over to help finish up lace edging on veil the night b4 wedding) Thanks for getting back to me. Take care
/Rosemary
Where did you buy the boning from? Been looking everywhere!
Hi, Abigail. CZcams can be a bit funny about posting links in the comments, but a link to the corset kit I used is in the description of this video. :)
Can this be done if the top is mesh and not satin overlain with mesh? What sort of reinforcement would you need to do with the first piece?
I would be concerned about putting extra stress on the mesh since that's a delicate fabric that can get stretched out of shape or torn. I personally wouldn't attempt it, but you might be more daring than I am. I'm not sure I can give proper advice as to additional reinforcement. I'm sorry, I wish I could have been more helpful.
Would this be a good solution for a wedding dress that just can't quite get zipped up all the way?
Because of covid, my area is in a stay at home order till the end of May and I can't get an alterations appointment until mid June and my wedding is mid July lol so its really cutting things close. My dress has a ton of bead work that will have to be taken out and re beaded if its taken out at the sides. My dress is only slightly too small so it needs to come out by about an inch. The only person doing alterations is charging an arm and a leg for the work which I understand because its labour intensive. But I'd love to find a solution that would cut the part out of having to unbead everything.
This should work for a wedding dress! You could either pop the loop boning on the zipper or at more of an angle to look intentional (so wider at the top than the bottom). I wouldn't cut your dress until you're certain you like how it looks. You can baste the loop bones on then fold the excess dress under and try it on.
Is it possible to remove just part of the zipper? I have a dress that has a low zipper but it's too small to completely zip and it would be ideal to have the bottom half zip and top half lace
I don't see why not. I would unpick the top of the zipper to the place you want it to stop, fold the unpicked sections over at a downward angle so the slider doesn't come completely off, stitch it down, and cut off the excess. I know you can also move the metal stopper down if that's easier for you. Then, just follow the lace up back tutorial.
I hope any of that made sense. If it didn't, try googling "How to Shorten a Zipper from the Top" Best of luck!
@@HattoHem awesome, thank you!
Hi. I want to do this but don’t have a sewing machine and don’t know how to sew! Is the a way that I can attach the loop boning to the dress by another method....fabric glue???
I wouldn't recommend it. I'd be worried it wouldn't take the strain of pulling the dress closed since all of the strain is on those bones.
I would reccomend either a backstitch or running back stitch if you were doing this by hand, but have a thimble and pliers on hand. Honestly? It would probably just be easiest to ask someone with a sewing machine to do this for you.
(For reference, I usually do this alteration for $75. The kit is around $30, I think.)
So do I just remember the one side of the zipper or both sides? And then sew the piece in and fold over and sew again for a clean look?
You would completely remove the zipper. Then, if we mean the same thing, you sew the lacing piece in, fold over, and sew again for a clean look.
Can you do it by hand if you don't have the sawing machine?
Hi! I would think you could do it by hand. I'd recommend a fairly strong stitch, like a backstitch, since it will be taking on a lot of strain.
@@HattoHem thanks!
I just bought an adorable dress but it is way too tight in the chest area so I want to make it bigger with lace-up on both sides but I don't have a sewing machine to add those loops.. Can you give me any tips for hand sewing them pleaseee 😭
For hand sewing, I would recommend doing a backstitch for maximum strength since the loops will be taking on a lot of strain. I hope this works for you!
What is the name of the kit?
I believe it's the Laceeis Corset Kit. There's a link the description. This tutorial can be used for similar corset kits as well
How did you make the modesty panel??
Luckily, it came with the kit. In the past, I've made one by measuring the space the gap in the back and making a triangular panel that's around two inches wider on the sides. I would make it two or three layers: fashion fabric, interlining, and depending on the interlining fabric, a lining. I hope that helps!
@@HattoHem yes, thank you!!
the dress that i had is constantly getting stuck in this one area because the cloth part is too thick i just don't got a sewing machine ima ask my grandma for help lmfao
Hurray for Grandmas! :D
