- RECIPE:
French Onion Soup
Servings: 4-6
Ingredients
4 Tbsp. olive oil
2 Tbsp. butter
6 cups yellow onions, thinly sliced
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp sugar
3 Tbsp. flour
6 cups beef stock
1 cup white wine
1/2 tsp ground sage
1 whole bay leaf
1 loaf french bread, or baguette
2 Tbsp. olive oil
1/2 an onion, grated
3 Tbsp. cognac (optional)
12 oz swiss cheese, grated
salt, to taste
pepper, to taste
4 oz parmesan cheese, grated
Instructions
Preheat Oven To 325˚F/160˚C
1. In a large pot over medium-low heat, heat olive oil and add butter.
2. Once the butter is melted, stir the onions and coat with oil and butter. Cover and cook for 20 minutes, checking occasionally.
3. Turn up the heat to medium-high. Add 1/2 tsp salt and sugar. Stir & keep cooking until onions are brown and caramelized. (the bottom of the pan will develop some browning, it’s very important!)
4. Stir in flour one tablespoon at a time and cook for about 30 seconds.
5. Add 1 cup of the beef broth. Use a whisk to scrape up (deglaze) the browned bits stuck on the bottom of the pan.
6. Add the remaining 5 cups of beef stock, wine, sage and bay leaf. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer, uncovered, for 40 minutes.
7. In the meantime, cut the french bread or baguette into 1/2 inch thick pieces. Brush with oil on both sides and bake at 325˚F/160˚C for 30 minutes, flipping halfway. Once they are done, increase oven temperature to 350˚F/175˚C.
8. In an oven safe bowl, pour the onion soup, filling about 3/4 of the way full. Top with a piece of baked french bread, and generously sprinkle swiss and parmesan on top.
9. Bake for 2-3 minutes or until the cheese has melted completely and become slightly golden.
10. Serve & enjoy!!

idk why but this just reminds me of that episode of Kitchen Nightmares in which Gordon complained about the lack of onions in the french onion soup and then the owner just shoved a bunch of raw onions in it and served it back to him lol
I just came from that video😂
@@drags5009 yeah, me too
I'm glad I'm not the only one who got concerned with the spilling at the end.
You spilled it everywhere at the end D:
+S4b4t3r yes, it was gorgeous.
S4lty It dosent matter cuz its still delicious.
Don't be saltyyyy
And i cringed to that
Put the bowl on a plate. Problem solved. Looks fancier that way too.
that one bay leaf
Bay leaves are really potent, so you don't need a lot.
ik4
ikr
Purple Ostrich same
bay leaves have a ton of flavour so its very easy to over use them.
Am I the only person who was so annoyed by the burned onions on the bottom of the pot in the beginning
yes!!
No
When malinchistas soup, put half an onion in the pan and almost burn it and put it in the soup It’s delicious ;)
In fact, it is supposed to be burnt at the bottom! The wine is added partly to “deglaze” the bottom of the pan - to remove all the grit.
@@eb3harmony I think you meant “no”
Basically every video, Meat, Add tons of cheese, more meat more cheese maybe potatoes, pasta, Bake, Add more cheese and green stuff as garnish, Oh Yeah.
And avocado
Don't forget to fry it
Oh yes
dont forget the alcohol
+Phanic! At The Twenty Øne Honeymoons yes that's a key component to the recipes
This is legit onion gravy with bread and cheese lol
+x you don't have to be an asshat
I don't know if you realize but that is how you make French onion soup
lol I know, right? and pizza is just dough with marinara sauce and cheese.
Caitlin Leney Tillett and grilled cheese sandwiches are just cheese and bread lol
Asshat? Well there's a new one
That bay leaf was the most powerful thing I witnessed in years.
when u hate onions but still watching it
Me. 😂
ikr
soo mee xD
lol yes
Yup
They did it wrong. Swiss cheese yes but you meant to you thinly sliced load toasted on one side, with GRUYERE cheese! Put the cheese on the bread once grated and put that in the bottom of the bowl. Then pour the soup on top! That's what melts the cheese and makes the soup infuse with the bread properly.
It never said this was the proper way to make it.
+Emily X. Well with over 2.6M subscribers and viewers, people are going to think it's the right way
Gruyere is NOT what you use for this
They did this in the wrong order... you're supposed to add the sherri once your done cooking the onions to deglaze the pan, not once you add the beef stock
Heyit'smec I was looking through the comments to see if someone could give me some insight, so thank you for that, because I thought it was a bit late to add the wine, but didn't know for sure
As a french, never saw this in my entire life
😂
me neither
+DizZy bazZ As an American, I've never had French onion soup with bread in it lol. I thought they were going to use the bread as a side
I read somewhere that it's called that because of the way the onions are cut, not because the recipe originated in France.
Maybe you're a french person raised in another country?
One of my fav soups
Me too!!
my favorite soup
Thanks for the only real french Onion Soup on CZcams! The Secret is to let the onions burn down with a little flour. Thats why it looks dark brown. All Ingredians where chosen good. Maybe more Stock and less wine.
French onion soup is so good ☺😊
Thank you for the recipe! Made and it was delicious. 😊
This is Very good
Best soup ever.
1:06 yes, I eat my soup always like this
Just made this for the first time using this recipe. The recipe is all over the place. Written recipe doesn’t require the extra 30 minute baking time and the salt measurements are skewed. It came out fine baking the soup for 5 minutes instead of 30. Next time I make it, I’ll use more stock and no wine
I put onions and beef stock in a pot and let it simmer for 10 min and call it a day 😂😂
My favourite dish in my favourite channel.
That one Bay leaf.
Its so amazing.

Wait, where's the avocado?
*Le gasp* Sacrilege!!! ;P
+Callam Thomas the cringe is strong in you
I'm having a tasty marathon :D
It must be popular in France.
I love onion soup! As a kid in England I grew up on that shit. Not sure about anyone else!
+HolyVeganEmpire that onion soup shit. Not literal shit. You're funny

+Tang Stew it is
+Tang Stew not all french food is Le Frogh Legs or croissants
Well as a i am french citizen your comment is not really useful to me
Delicious! We can't wait to make our next video
The bay leaf made a revolution in the soup..
great
What the fuck was that ending? why would you place the bread IN THE SOUP and then attempt to scoop it....
Aren't you supposed to use gruyere not swiss & parm?
looks pretty good
last time i was this early, finebros had 13million subscribers
They do have 13 mil subscribers .-.
Well 15 million then
+Ali Ali They never had 15 million either you fail.
I'm pretty sure that It's way yummier that the original
White wine should go in after the seasoned onions caramelize, you gotta deglaze the pot so nothing burns and you get all the flavour
Cook the onions for 20 mins.
Simmer for another 40 mins (while baking for 30 mins).
After all done, bake everything again for 30 mins and broil for 3 mins.
1 and a half-hour spent just to eat a bowl of onion soup?
No wonder fast-food are getting more and more popular in a fast-paced life we live these days.
i don't like onions but this looks so good
0:35 toasted bread @ 325°F 30min
1:01 Broil 3 minutes
You are truly amazing
I don't like sage flavor in the food but this soup is brilliant
Never heard of this in France.
Anyone else here Chef Jon? "Thats a rouuuxx" lol
HELL YEA BOOOOOYYYYYYY
french onion soup is like molten lava
When u despise onions but would still eat this
Who would want to eat that
he spilled the soup out just like in blended
Try tomato soup with bread
Did anyone else mouth drop open when you seen the burnt spots ...other than that they good
why does the pan having the onion seem burnt?
it definitely is. it kinda concerns me tbh lol
Once it took me 3 hours to make French Onion soup because the onions just wouldn't cook.
Can anybody tell me the name of the jazz music?
The spill-
I just want the giant crouton & the cheese
>giant cruton
You mean bread......right
I'm French and I don't know anybody, besides tourists, who considers this a typical French dish. 😂
Ain't nobody got time for that!!
First mistake was burning the bottom of the pot and then whisking it. Whisking it scrapes the burnt residue and alters the flavour of the dish
I bet it would look better if you added a slice of cheese instead of shredded cheese so it'll coat the entire top of the soup and not just the bread.
This recipe is heresy. I already subscribed to another video’s procedure to cook french onion soup.
I'm allergic to white wine and cognac so is there something else I can use or can I leave them out?
No avacados, 2/10
You right! Because he pour the soup too much. LMAO
Is the alcohol not necessary?
Can u do this with chicken broth?
Where are your bowls from? They are the perfect size.
Unless you're just recording a video and dont care if soup spills everywhere, i suggest you guys pour smaller amounts of the soup if you're using something the same size as whatever that bowl was
guys please tear up the bread they left it as a slice to be unique.
id rather scope out the soup abit so it doesnt spill
Lol why beef stock ? Can we use any another ?
One restaurant I worked at in college used provolone to top the French onion. I always found it strange but it did taste really good.
i cant have white wine because im muslim, is there like a sustitute that i can use???
this looks like a surefire way to make your house and everything in it permanently smell like onions
lol all regular french onion soup is smothered in cheese. thats just how it's made, if it wasn't like that, then it wouldn't be french onion soup. so if you can't complain about something thats meant to have cheese having cheese. it just doesn't work that way.
The French onion soup is not with Swiss or Cheddar. It is with French cheese not American
They didn't use American cheese, what the hell are talking about?
And now for some criticism: Don't have your dish overflow.....imagine if you were serving that in front of someone and you just did that.
Is it ok if you don't use wine?
No the white cooking wine is a crucial part of the recipe.
I hate eating onions but love to cook with them for flavor (i remove the onion after) so this was too much onion for me.
+briana Sarmiento It's onion soup, what did you expect?
+Callam Thomas I know, just didn't know it had that much onion in it.
Is it a texture thing?
+Callam Thomas haha to be honest, I have no clue why I dislike them. I can't remember the last time I even tasted one.
is that okay to not put wine in my onion soup?
Hint: It is traditionally donr with provolone and/or parmesan.

what can i substitute the wine for
Nothing the white cooking wine is important.
That just looks too messy tbh and too much cheese!
IKR
Obviously French onion soup is made with Swiss and Italian Cheese...
Ummm.. that is not french onion soup. Similiar but it is not it.
Pot is burned n badly but u keep on cooking in it really???
Onion gravy wasnt drowned in cheese for a change--oh wait
Who else just stared at the bay leaf..
it take over 2 hrs to make though. aint no body got time for that
I almost shit myself after she put that one Bay Leaf in the soup at 0:26. 😂
What the fuck was all that white foam that exploded out of the soup??? Lol
+Reuben Taylor I think it was a time lapse of the soup boiling.
That's why you only use one bay leaf, they're explosive!
+John Phillips Some very unstable herbs, for sure!
Lol Swiss cheese. But which Swiss cheese ? There are hundreds of them
