Hi Adam - have you ever thought about establishing some native prairie on part of the land you mow? It takes a couple of years to establish and must be burned regularly. Once established, the flowers and plant diversity are spectacular. It is a great way to cut down on chemical and mowing expense. It would also set you up to have a couple productive hives. Some states have resources to help landowners establish prairie.
Let me preface this with I'm saying this with kindness - just matter of fact - Adam, the grass would have grown, the rain would have come, & the ruts would have happened when you were home, too. The great thing about having property is that you don't really need to go away to go on vacation....you can swim, campfires, tent, fish, do everything you'd do if you went away!

Adam, something to consider: you basically have a rural property. Maybe the solution would be to stop treating it like it's a suburban lawn? Maybe only cut some trails through it as it grows longer, to be used for walking, ATV's etc, but otherwise grow pasture grass on it and have it hayed a couple of times a year? Or better yet, raise some hair sheep on it utilizing intensive rotational grazing. Grass-fed lamb is a premium meat and you could be making some good income with it.
I extend the joy of vacation with months of research and planning then months of post processing the photos. The actual trip is just a sliver of the total enjoyment of traveling to new locations. 8 days away from first real trip to Switzerland.

The massive "unknown" about diy is the headache caused by poor design. It doesn't matter if it is poorly design roads, fields, beaches or ponds, The money you think you will be saving goes away after you face the maintenance issue. This is a very good video to encourage forethought.

Yup. Totally agree on vacation. The way its been raining by me this year, I can barely keep up with the mowing without being away - usually it slows down in the July heat... Winter isn't much better for being away, because you have to worry about heat failing and the house freezing. That happened to my sister several years ago. Even the water in the toilets was frozen solid. Big time damage. I think mud season in late March/early April is probably the best time for vacation - can't really work in the woods, no mowing yet, too early to plant, and much less freeze danger with days above freezing.
Those packets drink up water, where as with the liquid dye, you are adding volume to your pond. There you go, I just helped you figure out how to increase the water level of your pond! haha

The exact reason why I blacktopped mine. Gravel driveways are a maintenance nightmare on a hill and at some point you will have to add thousands of $$$ for more gravel.
I second Doug's comment. When my driveway was gravel I had to bring in gravel in every year. The blacktop is great. The only thing now is you have to coat it about ever two years. At least I don't have to haul gravel in.
All it takes is time and money, and mostly money when you're paying someone else to do it. Bob Villa's website says an asphalt driveway runs $7 to $13 per square foot, including $2 to $6 per square foot for materials and $5 to $7 per square foot for labor (2023 date on the article). A typical drive is 10' to 12' wide, so using $10 as the average price, that's $100 to $120 per linear foot. How long is the driveway? Yeah, gravel is fine.
That's one big reason why I left "corporate America"... vacations were one thing but active Reserve obligations added to that situation. They tried to make me retire because my Reserve unit called me up more than once. Then they threatened to fire me if I didn't retire. I told them to back off or Title 10 would be brought into play. I was in water management for 11 years. The water shows you where to install pipes or large stones for heavy rain runoff. Repairs are temporary and will keep happening.
once the pond is full and established, get a permit and get some grass eating carp. you'll never have weeds. you can feed the clippings to get them started growing.
What fantastic problems to have my guy. Fix the driveway, you have the tools and ability, mow, awesome zero turn. Pond needs a beach? Shoot you have an excavator. Life comes at you enjoy those struggle moments most people could have lost their house or property if something really happened. Last thought you are getting paid to post a great video and I'm all for it for things you already needed to do. Keep it up, it's idyllic.

Always something to redo when You step away. How often does it wash out? Would a buried culvert pipe in the ditch line control water flow under ground? Start with a catch bassoon funneled into a culvert pipe.
Have you ever thought about getting a swisher pull behind mower that would offset on your mower? That would cut your mowing time in half. I only have 3 acres but I love mine. Saved me so much time.
I’m a subscriber whose life has led him astray from your channel for the last few months and boy oh boy that drone view of the place was dandy. You’ve come a long way to taming those acres! Pardon my ignorance to your plans you described in my absence, but I suggest maintaining that much turf might be done with less effort and costs. I would identify 1/4-1/2 acre plots, circles or strips to cut twice per year only, once in late spring and again in late fall. These plots could rotate each year until you determine an aesthetic layout that pleases the eyes. Massive amounts of turf kept at lawn height is pleasing but time and machinery intensive. It’s also a hindrance to wildlife diversity and soil health. Also, as enticing as acres of fresh mowed turf looks and smells, it’s a touch trite in a rural setting.
Here’s a secret on the vacation routine. It is supposed to be work for you so that coming home and returning to work feels like the holiday. Anything less and you are living life selfishly and stealing the vacation dreams from your children and your wife (who lives for creating these lifetime memorials). I said that with a bit of “tongue in cheek” but mostly it is true. To prevent it always being only one way (destination vacation every year) or the other (never going anywhere and using vacation to work or relax at home)….you can plan it so that it alternates. On the staycation years, you still have a few days locally with the fam before sending them off while you stay home. That way, you can feel better about fully disconnecting on those years that the whole family vacations together. On those years, you will absolutely heavy load the before vacation and prepare to jump right back in immediately upon return to keep routines on track and address the unplanned stuff ASAP. It had already been stated that being there isn’t a remedy…it only reduces the stress a bit. Good video…keeping it real is what makes your channel grow (but don’t dwell). The incidents and issues that you had to address made for good content. I loved the blading on the driveway but I LOVED the time lapse on mowing because I fully identified with that one. I imagined it was literally therapeutic for you…I know it would have been for me (Seat time is always powerful but mowing seat time is next level relaxation).
So much time spent on the property but we must all love it. I know I do. Looking great! I think you are going to be 100% on the pond and it’s going to be beautiful!
Food for thought. I mow less and less every year. I truly don’t enjoy it I bush hog the areas I don’t mow. The area up by the road you could potential make that into a garden area I spend very little time in my garden I use wood chips from tree services so little to no weeding. Maybe other area as orchard. Both potential income sources also opposed to the money put mowing grass is.

Did you ever happen to think maybe black top or concrete it, based on video, concrete would be expensive but worth it and look great but black top is more geared to what you need and honestly for what you get, it’s pretty cost efficient.
Everything would still have happened if you were on vacation or not. Now, if you were gone a month, that might be another matter. Remember, you have a family to take care of. My rule of thumb is… the person in front of me, the people around me, my property, my neighborhood, my city, my country… in that order. If I can’t get past the first two or three, no big deal in taking care of things. On the plus side, you have an arsenal of equipment that makes things easier.
As to weed growth, if, either by way of pond dye or pond fertilizer, you keep your pond water visibility restricted to 18" or so you shouldn't have too much of a problem with weed growth except in the shallowest areas. Beautiful place!

I have been watching for a while and enjoy the videos. I want to encourage you to change your verbiage about hating vacation. I’m 47 and had a dad that hated vacation. I’ve known he was an a hole for years but recently realized he is a true narcissist. That vacation will be a core memory for your wife and kids. The grass will always grow. The gravel will always wash. How many vacations do you have with your kids? My youngest is 15, I also have a 17 and 20 year. I do see them continuing to vacation with us but they are basically out of the house. Enjoy the time with your kids, their will be plenty of grass to mow during the next 50-60 years.
I get it, i can be overwhelming before and after a trip. Good part is that you have the equipment to fix it up. And also, your operator skills on that excavator are solid. I saw how smooth you were with that sand. Practice makes perfect right? Another solid video.
How do you think some #4 stone would work for a drive? Maybe be a little rough until it packs. Also make a great foundation for future asphalt drive, or concrete.
Thinking the wife, might be like my friends, husband. He always has a huge amount of outside work to do, stock to feed, water, plus work a full time job. Vacation always got put on the back burner. She and the children, started vacationing, leaving him at home. This particular husband, wouldn’t know a vacation had been planned until he saw suitcases being packed ! Funny thing, the wife never got upset, she would say, you stay, we are going ! Everyone will be happy 🤷♀️
The decision to spend quality time with friends and family , enjoy their company and absorb their love is but a very brief opportunity. The Homestead will be there, its not going anywhere. But, in the not to distant future, Kids will be grown and going their own way. You will gave 35 years to uokeep and maintain your kingdom once they are off on their own. Priorities make for a life time of fond memories

Life is not only about perfection and dollar signs. It is about enjoying your time and just getting on with living. Sometimes things are not always perfect. Not all lines are straight and curves not too curvey. When I watch how you are getting more compulsive with your daily routine I want to shout and say chill out. Your friend Doug seems to be an influence on your actions and it is affecting you. When a person polishes the bottom of his shoes he has a problem. Doug has some really inovate ideas but every thing in his life is cleaner than new, all things are lined up to a precise detail, nothing out of order or displaced, I dont want to be taken out of context but it apears l little OCD behaviour, Since retireing life has got a lot easier and if my wife or I scratch the car or the grand kids leave sticky marks on the wall what the heck, it is better the car than any of my kids being injured. I call it the evil eye protecting me and my family, the car can be fixed broken bones is another story. I sure can relate…we are new Grandparents 3 states away…spending 2 weeks there and home even that short amount of time really messes things up.

Dam Adam! My father and I judge a lawn based on the quantity of beer we can drink whilst mowing it and that there is EASILY a 12 beer lawn!
The pond dye will keep the weeds down. My pond is 25 years old and I have no weeds at all below the water line.
I’d build some water tables on that drive to keep the water from gaining speed down that slope. My driveway works only because I have them.

You have to crown the middle, so it drains off on each side, instead of draining downhill in the road. Of course ditches on each side help

If you put a culvert in under your driveway and make the driveway higher than the grass it won't wash away the driveway

I have been watching for a while and enjoy the videos. I want to encourage you to change your verbiage about hating vacation. I’m 47 and had a dad that hated vacation. I’ve known he was an a hole for years but recently realized he is a true narcissist. That vacation will be a core memory for your wife and kids. The grass will always grow. The gravel will always wash. How many vacations do you have with your kids? My youngest is 15, I also have a 17 and 20 year. I do see them continuing to vacation with us but they are basically out of the house. Enjoy the time with your kids, their will be plenty of grass to mow during the next 50-60 years.
I get it, i can be overwhelming before and after a trip. Good part is that you have the equipment to fix it up. And also, your operator skills on that excavator are solid. I saw how smooth you were with that sand. Practice makes perfect right? Another solid video.

How do you think some #4 stone would work for a drive? Maybe be a little rough until it packs. Also make a great foundation for future asphalt drive, or concrete.

Thinking the wife, might be like my friends, husband. He always has a huge amount of outside work to do, stock to feed, water, plus work a full time job. Vacation always got put on the back burner. She and the children, started vacationing, leaving him at home. This particular husband, wouldn’t know a vacation had been planned until he saw suitcases being packed ! Funny thing, the wife never got upset, she would say, you stay, we are going ! Everyone will be happy 🤷♀️
My driveway slopes at 30 degrees so you can imagine how fast my gravel runs downhill
The decision to spend quality time with friends and family , enjoy their company and absorb their love is but a very brief opportunity.
The Homestead will be there, its not going anywhere.
But, in the not to distant future,
Kids will be grown and going their own way.
You will gave 35 years to uokeep and maintain your kingdom once they are off on their own.
Priorities make for a life time of fond memories

I agree about taking "vacations". Bust butt to get ahead, go somewhere that you don't really want to be, get home and bust butt to catch up. I'd rather stay home. Ornery, I know. Life is not only about perfection and dollar signs. It is about enjoying your time and just getting on with living. Sometimes things are not always perfect. Not all lines are straight and curves not too curvey. When I watch how you are getting more compulsive with your daily routine I want to shout and say chill out. Your friend Doug seems to be an influence on your actions and it is affecting you. When a person polishes the bottom of his shoes he has a problem. Doug has some really inovate ideas but every thing in his life is cleaner than new, all things are lined up to a precise detail, nothing out of order or displaced, I dont want to be taken out of context but it apears l little OCD behaviour, Since retireing life has got a lot easier and if my wife or I scratch the car or the grand kids leave sticky marks on the wall what the heck, it is better the car than any of my kids being injured. I call it the evil eye protecting me and my family, the car can be fixed broken bones is another story. As an after thought, try getting sheep, pretty to look at, environmentl friendly, cut the grass for free sell the wool and eat the meat, win win stuation..
The power broom on my Steiner would take care of that gravel in the yard in a jiffy.

Consider not wasting so much time with acres and acres of grass.
Plant alfalfa and sell the much-needed hay. Claim farm status and reduce your taxes.
Then you can spend more time chilling beside your man-made lake.
