- Sitting within a long outfield throw of the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge and straddling the counties of Marin, San Francisco and Contra Costa - Red Rock is an enigma. At less than six acres, its tricky topography has inspired countless development ideas yet little action. Joe Rosato Jr. reports.

How have I lived in the Bay Area my entire life, and this is the first time I’ve ever heard of Red Rock Island?
I mean unless you pass the San Rafael Richmond bridge you've never seen it.
Maybe you have lived under the rock...lol
Someone who’s going to buy this really should be out of their mind, for $25mil.
That's chump change for the rich commiefornians
For the RICH people $25 million is just pennies to them.
@@boohere2 Rich people don't get rich by squandering millions of dollars.
@@tk2x You don’t know the Bay. Once they’ve got billions, it’s no big deal to squander millions on a passion project.
It won't be a squander. They'll figure out how to make money off of it.@@tk2x
Any real "critical thinker" isn't gonna fork over $25mil...
Also, with 3 counties- i cannot imagine the bureaucracy and taxes...😅
Elon musk. That's like 1 dollar to him.
London breed will buy it
@@mr.b3168 He’s a broke boy now. No way he has $25M in liquidity.
He has a satellite constellation and has built two of the largest tech companies worth billions of dollars. He might have flubber now but I think he could afford it if he wanted
I had heard more than 2 decades ago that a previous owner had tried to develop the island but wasn’t able to navigate the multi-county permitting complications. So good luck with that lol. One expensive camp ground.
Unusable property.
There are many islands in the San Francisco Bay Area. There is a book about them. You can find islands all around the Bay. They go out to the Farallons and up into the Delta and down to the South Bay.
Manganese was mined on the island. Ocean going vessels would bring cargo to San Francisco and would take rocks as ballast to leave. If they used the manganese from Red Island they could at least sell it when they didn't need it anymore.
25 million for a piece of ugly rock on the water?.. they must be kidding..
The Island is akin to a MS update: "Please don't turn off "YOUR COMPUTER." with
emphasis on "YOUR." Any development on the Island would be scrutinized 1K%.
5 acres of raw land = $25M
Hard nope.
They were trying to sell it for 5 million about 5 years ago and nobody wanted to buy that garbage. 25 million? Lmao good luck.
Chances of being allowed to develop the island into something useful are approximately 0%.
"It sits between three counties, so someone would have to do their own investigation to see what's possible"
Translation: ALL SALES FINAL!
it'll cost more to "do something" than to buy.
In the current climate I can't see anyone who buys this getting permission to build anything more than a boat dock.
Imagine that this can only happen in California now wouldn't you think environmentalist groups would stop anybody from developing on that little piece of Rock?
Of course you can't do anything with it.
It's been for sale for years. The only thing different now is they've raised the price.
A lovely piece. Loving
I don't think you can call that camping going to an island right next to a busy bridge.
Also, they acquired it almost for free, dint do sh!t and wants 25 mil🃏
Luck of the draw. You were born in America, yet you cry about migrants. You didn'tt do anything to be here
Would buy it if hit the jackpot
Sell it back to CA state to build shelters , 5 acres land can build a lot of shelters
Build a big shelter on the island and move the homeless there.
t's gonna be quite a bit more than just $25m to do anything with it. The costs of building a big house or hotel on there wouldn't be cheap, with materials and laborers having to be transported by boat. Not to mention building some sort of scaffolding and stairs so workers can climb up and down to the top, where I assume any building would be located. Then there's potentially building a small pier or helipad for easier access. To say nothing of securing the relevant permissions from all three counties ($$ lawyers fees and lots of time waiting for the local government to extract their pounds of flesh). The only serious buyers for a property like this would be people ready to spend another $25m on top of the asking price to develop it. A pretty select group of people.
I took my girlfriend to that island for prom and we both lost our virginity
I was wondering what those two bodies were doing there when I was looking through my binoculars
Don't forget the scenic view of Folsom Prison too! I understand why people don't want it lol former mine site (heavy metal contamination), no running services and need approval from 3 counties to do any work
I would develop a small house in whichever county had the best practices for taxation and such. First though I would want to find out if it was possible to connect utilities there. It wouldn’t be awful to get power through generator and solar but water and disposal would be a pain to figure out, at least in my limited skill set.
This should be given not sold but given back to the Native tribes of CA who used it before. I dont understand why every piece of land has to be messed with. Itshould be left alone to the wildlife that calls it home. Creativity?! Calling a wedding chapel, hotel, this island is enough the way it was intended to be a piece of land for wildlife, not humans.
Build a mansion and rent it for airbnb
I have heard this island comes under all three counties - SF, Marin and Contra costa🔒
They literally said that in the video
I'll give ya five bucks.
2:09 "incredible beach"... 😂...
Fun fact: on Red rock island, San Francisco borders Richmond (at least on google maps)
They used Alcatraz to keep criminals from the public now you need an island to get away from the criminals 😂
I say leave it to nature
You'd think for 25m it would come with a couple building suggestions...
The way to build there is underground.
Paint it orange
Some billionaire should buy the island and put a huge Cape Hatteras style lighthouse on top of it.
Yeah that would be cool until you have to go into town
The City should buy it.
“ a little bit of a puzzle, 3 counties” , real meaning, legal disaster, decade before you get permits from all 3 to even build there.
Looks like a big rock to me. You can't build on that or someone already would have.
No water No power No nothing
Only a matter of time until they figure out how to poop on it.
Trying to sell to hard, giving just facny ideas but no real value or real help 🤡
Lmao with the comments😂😂.. ill buy it doe dolla fiddy.
Can't build anything anyways so what's the point?
Bird poop makes great organic fertilizer.
Spend $25,000,000 of which he gets his commission and you need to do the research to see if you will get planning permission. That’s a red flag 🚩 for not getting permission to build anything😂
Why would I spend 25mil on an island when the buyer hasn’t even settled what can be done with it with the counties? You want me to do that leg work? Red flag…
Ead thanks
This is for real estate speculators only.
The state should condemn the land and call it a park.
It was an inheritance, not earned in any real sense. Just take it California. Call it a park.
😅😅😅😅😅😅😅 0:38
no sh*t definitely a risk taker lol
Sell it to China
Some telecommunication giant buy it put up some cell phone towers
Iconic
Whoop de doo
wonder if China is buying it???
Do it Elon!
@berner
It could become the Bay Area's sanctuary for the homeless. They can set their tents up on the island and poop wherever they want.
garabage
NBC BAY AREA NEWS IS NOT GARBAGE!!!!!
Elon musk will buy this island
He can’t afford it.
"whoever buys it is going to be a critical thinker" lololololol
How can it be sf county of its not even close to sf😂😂
🫨🤌🤌
Put the homeless there
The day dreamer in me would absolutely love to purchase this. I would love to know the acreage so that I would know how many cubic feet per million $25 million buys!?!
Story says 5.8 acres
Yeah looks pretty unusable plus you have 3 counties that you need approval from sounds like a headache
$25M rip-off
🤣😂😂😂😂😂
I'll give you 25k, that's my final offer, I also demand you flatten an acre so I can build a house and I insist you pay all closing costs, otherwise I threaten to back out......
No. The person who buys it is a wealthy person looking to flex. That’s all.
You can’t build there. End of the story
Get a barge and some solar panels. Water filtration I don’t know yet. Your sewer is going into the bay.
25mil check out how much it used to be. Nobody wants this island. It was 5 million down from like 10. 25 million 😂😂😂
Pfffffff!
Very unattractive island and views. Looks like a giant Poop. $25Mil. What could you create with this island? It will just crumble as you build.
~ I wouldn’t give U $25 for it ~
