  • Have you been told not to use black paint in your art? Have you been told it will muddy your colors, dull your paintings, or that real artists don’t use black? Have you decided to use it anyway and been confused over the different options? Today I am going to try and demystify the color black and help us understand how to use it, when to use it, and why it’s gotten a bad name over the past century.

    4 years of art classes and this is the most comprehensive look into blacks. I definitely came from the school of thought that shy'd away from utilizing blacks. Thank you so much for the great video; I'm sure Johannes Itten would be proud.
    PS: having taken color theory I'm sure that the colors on my screen look nothing like what they did in person and with that being said your explanation throughout was phenomenal!

    You can make the darker areas of your painting without using the harshness of black. Not always but black can cause the painting to contrast more than coalesce. In abstracts however black can be the anchor of the entire piece. Great video. Having your own artistic style will vary and I support you all ❤️

    Lamp Black & Carbon Black? I saw the question posed below, but no responses. This has come up among artists and students a lot over the years, so I offer some info. Surely, there is more info, but this may be sufficient for those who don't enjoy studying the earlier ways in earlier days... As recently as the late 1800's, writing/drawing ink was often studio made by artists & writers, to get the version of sepia, blue or black inks & paints made or tuned to suit them. Lamp soot was collected from things like their "hurricane" style glass shields on their kerosene lamps, for instance. It is normally of extremely fine particle size, relatively free of other things and of course, free. It is mostly plain carbon soot (and unburned kerosene compounds). Growing up in the 1960's, I grilled my Great GrandDad on how artists and others did things before nearly everything was made in factories. Born in 1883, he clued me in to how creative some clever people really were. I mention this to encourage artists to care about learning real and useful answers from Mike and others, because the answers they work hard to bring us can benefit your artwork! You don't have to care about supplies at a scientific level, but a little effort can yield big results in your work, inspire you and who knows - you may take new knowledge and get creative with it!

I don't paint with black, because I'm a beginner, and it screws everything up, maybe when I'm better I'll use more black. I do sew with black fabric though.

    Great episode. I think black is like any other color, it has a place and a time to use it and there is a place and a time to use chromatic black.
    I also think the only thing that can truly be called cheating in art is trying to pass someone else's work off as your own.
    Hope you feel better soon. Thank you for the lessons. :)

    I mix my own darks from the colors I'm using in the painting that way it looks far more natural and it adds color harmony since it's colors I've already used on the piece . The only time I use a tube black is when I paint in grey scale which is rare ☺

    Hope you're feeling better, Mike! Your Artist Problems vids always make me laugh! I'm glad you explained the different types of black paint - I never really understood the differences, so was probably using them all wrong for my intentions. I've mixed blacks using watercolors, but not acrylics or oils.

  • @BigMoepar
    @BigMoepar Před 7 lety

    I use both a mixed black & a regular tube black (usually mars black is what I have on hand), and sometimes a paynes gray. Depends on what I'm doing as to what I use. If I'm doing a mixed media piece, I use the mars blk or paynes gray. If I'm doing what I consider a more serious painting ( or commission), I'll do a mixed black using colors on my palette to keep it more in the same tonal ranges.

  • @terpcj
    @terpcj Před 7 lety +2

    Other than beginners who try to make shadows with straight black, I see the issue as artificial and, yes, a little snobbish. At the end of the day, mixed paint is mixed paint and, allowing for deliberate exceptions, black's ability to draw the eye means it should generally be tinted with other colors when it's used. Just because you mixed your gray using black doesn't mean you can't still tint it warmer or cooler as you desire. While I usually mix a chromatic black (UmB + BU) as my base "black" as it's usually less attention grabbing, I'll use Pblk as my value base instead if I'm pressed for time or only need a very small amount. Amazingly, klaxons have never blared because I've done so and my art still finds happy homes. Go figure.

    YAY! Mike, You're back!!!! =) I Missed you! The others did a good job filling in for you.... but it's just not the same. ;)
    I'm sorry to hear you were so sick, I hope you're feeling much better now. And I hope all is well with your wife and baby.
    I use store bought black all the time... I also use white all the time... but I HAVE heard some of the things you mentioned about using both of those "Colours"... I didn't even know I could mix my own black. I usually opt for either Ivory or Mars black. And my white is usually titanium.
    This was an interesting episode.
    I love both, burnt umber and burnt sienna. I always have both in my collection of paints.

  • @ronhochhalter3491
    @ronhochhalter3491 Před 7 lety +4

    Glad to see you black,,,,,,,, I meant back,,,,,,,,,, whatever. You know blacks and whites are always so controversial. Thanks for explaining chromatic black. I frequently use Gambin's chromatic black without a clear understanding of the magic mixture. I don't have a special go to black mixture, mostly the Burnt Umber and Ultramarine, along with any other Phthalo left hanging around on the palette at the time. It's very helpful to understand how blacks are created and that all are not created equal. Another intuitive and entertaining video! One question?? I don't remember seeing Carbon black on the selves at Jerry's, in oil's. Is Carbon not available in oil?
    Have you ever thought about doing a video explain why some colors take longer to dry than others? I heard an artist once talk about some of the basics like, Titanium White will stay fresh on your palette for days, while colors like Burnt Sienna will dry overnight. I'm talking about oil's of coarse. I don't know if this translates to acrylics or watercolors. This is an interesting topic when discussing pigments.

    • @JerrysArtarama
      @JerrysArtarama  Před 7 lety +1

      That's a good question Ron. Carbon black is generally called "lamp black" in oils. Why? I don't know. Other colors that you find in only one kind of medium, such as Chinese white, is more supply and demand than anything else. Watercolor specifically has several colors that aren't commonly used on an oil or acrylic painter's palette.
      Regarding the drying time of oils, the pigments do play a role, and part of that role is what actual oil they are using to bind them. A lot of brands make titanium and zinc white out of poppy oil or safflower oil, or a mixture. These oils do not tend to yellow as much, which can make a big difference in white. However, these oils dry at a different rate, and are less flexible than traditional linseed oil.

    • @ronhochhalter3491
      @ronhochhalter3491 Před 7 lety

      Thanks! That makes sense now, I've seen Lamp Black available with most brands. Regarding the comment you made about the different sheen's of black mixtures as they dry, that is important information. I've often become nervous while using Ivory. Especially with a current painting I'm working on, the sheen of my Ivory Black areas against Ultramarine Blue, creates major contrast difference in the sheen. Your advice that it will disappear after varnishing is good to know. Glazing over the Ivory will bring the sheen back up if needed, but you can't always do that. I will be interested to try the lamp black in these situations. All these videos about pigments are so helpful for a beginner artist like myself. If I were to line up all my paintings from the last 6 months, I believe a noticeable improvement in color theory can be seen over the this year. Thanks!!!

    Hi MikenotJerry, I use blaclk gesso only as a base to build on if I want depth in my painting. There are some great new colors that look lovely on black, like the interference, and fluorescent colors. Unless I use gesso black , I make my own with Thalogreen and a red quinacradone. Great video and entertaining as usual.

    I mix my own black. I tend to call it a dark; but, when it is just a smattering of black here and there in my painting, it has the illusion of being black. My favorite colors to use are French Ultramarine and Quinacridone Burnt Orange. Generally, though, I think a primary and its complement can make good darks.

  • @Fender178

    Or If you are Bob Ross Alizarin Crimson and Phthalo Green you can get a black out of that. Also Bob Ross' Midnight Black is a chromatic Black. But in Bob's case his black is based on purple (Alizarin Crimson and some kind of blue) With Acrylics I use the Grambacher Acdemy Acrylics because they are very good quality. I use Mars Black and I found out that Mars Black is very non-toxic and it mixes very well. I use black all the time when I paint I grew up with Bob Ross and Bill Alexander and both of them use a form of black. I some times mix my own black sometimes depending on my mood and what I want to try and create. Also Bob's version of black is also a blue based black because if you mix yellow and a tiny bit of black you get green. Also one negative thing about making your own black is that you will go through paint quicker so with me to quote Bob Ross "I look for easy ways to do something"

    As usual a fun video, sorry though I missed hearing the racial puns. Generally I use whatever I've got, Payne's grey mixed with rose madder or ultramarine blue or burnt umber or sienna all make a nice dark. It's good to use a mix of the colours that are used in the painting already. Black can make areas of a painting pop, you've just got to be selective. There's a place and time for all colours I suggest having fun exploring. Cheers!

Everything you do is just an impression, I used to think everything had to be exactly right, but I had no idea at all what exactly right meant - you could say photo real is "right" but I didn't want to do photo real - I think this is a common stumbling block for some artists.
