    Love how you sewed the elastic on while fabric was in the flat, as opposed to fighting a circle.

    One of my main reasons for sewing my own garments is to keep the stitching and how it irritates my skin at a minimum or eliminate it completely from touching my skin. There are lots of videos that walk us through the sewing of beautiful undergarments but fail to cover the benefits of the various methods, types, pros, and cons of stitching and for me the type that will be the most comfortable or at least less irritating to sensitive of for that matter anyones skin, sensitive or not.

    • @SewSewLive
      @SewSewLive  Před 2 měsíci

      Well I’m sorry if I didn’t cover that! I try to keep that in mind too. I know many people who are irritated by the guts of our clothes! I have another video about elastic sewing. And it might give a good overview on methods. I have a few elastic/undergarment sewing video but not a ton. I’m not an expert in this particular thing but I love an experiment and I have a lot of experience. One thing I’ll recommend is using lighter weight thread. And the less the better. Good luck!

    You make sewing look so easy! I make undies and my own camisoles. I bought a grab bag of picot edge elastic on Etsy and I’m still using it a year later! I couldn’t find a cami pattern that I totally loved, so I copied my favorite Calvin Klein cami that was so old, probably 15 years? Love 💕 it! I added stretch lace to the bottom, regular narrow cotton lace to the neckline and arm areas- perfect!

    Too true that undie tutorials tend to use a domestic machine only, great that you show how to do it using overlocker and coverstitch for those who have them! I use your yoke trick all the time for shirts, but I never thought to use it for underwear, have to try that next time :-) BTW do you stretch the leg elastic at all when you sew it on? I like to stretch it a little at the back leg for coverage and not at all at the front leg and waist for comfort.

    • @SewSewLive
      @SewSewLive  Před 2 lety +2

      I think that’s a good combo! I think I unconsciously stretch it more along the back leg. Thanks for mentioning that!

  • @craftymystic4868
    @craftymystic4868 Před 2 lety +3

    Thanks, Seremy, had never noticed the folding over of the seam, my Victoria’s Secret even has a very sloppy seam, which could come apart except for the long bar tack along that elastic. So what looks like an extra step is quite necessary when you sew it like it. I’ll try the twisting the back half of the crotch piece, so automatic for me to just grab it around burrito style, but I will try that and also not quartering the elastic. I ordered some of the pretty foe from Minerva. Can’t find that here. I get some super soft elastics from Stitch Love Studio. Awesome soft matte elastics.

      I copied a pair of my own. And I think I showed that in a past live stream. Underwear are only 2-3 pattern pieces which makes it pretty easy. I cut apart my own and traced them on the fold. But there are so many underwear patterns out there if you don’t want to do that. 🙂

  • @proudasiangirl576
    @proudasiangirl576 Před 4 měsíci +1

    Quick question, I noticed that you didn't stretch out the elastic when sewing it on. Are you suppose to stretch the elastic out a bit so that it retracts when sewn onto the fabric?

    • @SewSewLive
      @SewSewLive  Před 4 měsíci

      The elastic length depends upon the size of the wearers leg. So maybe for some one else the elastic would need to be shorter and then stretched while you sew. I don’t remember how it was in this particular video but I thought I did stretch it. It’s not much but it’s enough. Maybe it doesn’t look like I’m stretching it but usually I give a long boring speech about when you sew stretchy stuff to stretch it, hold it static and then sew. Because you don’t want to be pulling it once the machine has begun. Maybe it’s just an illusion I didn’t stretch it because I’m holding it that way.

    did you ever do style 2 video?

    • @SewSewLive
      @SewSewLive  Před 9 měsíci

      Okay so I looked and I couldn’t tell if I just didn’t name it ‘style 2’ or not. If by style 2 I meant that the crotch is built on to either the front or back I can walk you through the steps below. I’ve sewn them in live streams I’m sorry I can find it myself-I’ll have to sew some underwear again soon.
      Here’s some sewing steps:
      1) If you have a serger or want to finish the edge of your crotch lining piece, do so now. It’ll be the edge that doesn’t sew in to the seam. We’re going to clean finish the other edge.
      2) Take the underwear with the built in crotch and put it right sides together to the other underwear, and place your crotch lining piece right side to wrong side of these two: you’re making a sandwich!
      Sew this seam.
      3) Your underwear are now assembled but your lining is still loose on the edge that was finished in the first step. You have two options: You can catch it in the leg openings which you attach the elastic or you can stitch it down. I use a straight stitch. Just stitch it nice and flat lining up all leg edges.
      You know have an assembled body only needing keg and waist elastic and you can use the same steps I do in the video.
      I know I’ve sewn this style before but I don’t sew as many of these.

    Okay I have a question. I have asked all my friends and we are bamboozled. I have a pair of underwear from Victoria’s Secret and I noticed a long time ago that it has no side seams. So then I checked the back to see if the seam went up the back and there’s no seam there either. The ONLY seam on this underwear is the back crotch seam. How can you possibly construct a pair of underwear with only one seam?? It keeps me up at night, it’s 1:00 in the morning right now and I should be sleeping but I’ve been trying to find the answer all night. Please help me.

    • @SewSewLive
      @SewSewLive  Před 2 lety +4

      😂😂 ok I will answer this question even though it’s almost my bedtime because it will keep me up at night knowing you can’t sleep! The short answer is: they have machines that essentially knit them. If you think about a factory that makes socks, it’s the same idea. I’m simplifying but I’m hoping this makes it make sense. VS is a large enough company that they can have machines that are constructing the garment to their specs. Another interesting thing to look at is the way their bras are made. They’re essentially welded together! (Welded in the garment world). Another example is waterproof garments: a company called Arc’Teryx uses this technology too! Hope that helps!! Happy sewing!

    • @squeelia97
      @squeelia97 Před 2 lety +3

      @@SewSewLive okay that makes sense! I never really thought about the fact they could be knitted but I guess with a huge company and machinery anything is possible! Thank you, I will sleep much better now 😂

    • @SewSewLive
      @SewSewLive  Před 2 lety

      @@squeelia97 Awesome! I don’t know why I used socks as an example- tights, nylons, hosiery are all similar too. But usually on a circular machine hence the crotch seam!

      So one prolific maker of kids things likes this pattern and this is what he has to say: I’m a huge fan of Castella by Little Lizard King. The one pattern comes with styles for both boys and girls and multiple styles for both. I have had no creeping issues on my daughter and the size range is 12m - 14y
      Another had this to say: I've heard good things about the free Speedy Pants by Waves and Wild.
