    Cool video, Just be careful reloading while that tube is still smoking. Some hot embers at the bottom will make that shell go off as soon as you drop it in the tube.

      @@somnuswaltz5586 I have been doing pyro for almost 10 years now. While I have never seen it happen, it actually can happen. You pray and hope it doesn't ever happen to you but SAFETY is always #1 priority when working with the bigger stuff. It is more volatile and can kill you much quicker than any consumer item can. It is ALWAYS best practice to not reload a smoking mortar for concern of premature ignition. While it may never happen to you, do you really want to be "the guy" that cancels fireworks for the rest of us? I have taken numerous safety courses and am well versed in "WTF" moments... trust me! Having a 3" salute "flower pot" is not a fun day.

      @@CurtieKing 100% agree with you, but let's give the shooter(s) some credit, at no point do we see them place their head or bodies over the mortars. Something else to note is the shooter's predisposition to dart/jolt/jerk away as soon as the fuse is lit. Tells me there have been some experiences in the past leading up to that knee-jerk reaction! :D

      @@CurtieKing you’re so right, I’ve only had it happen once but that 3” shell lift cup took off half my hair and I couldn’t hear properly for almost a week. It’s not the biggest issue but damn that hurt bad haha

    When I was a kid in the 50s, professional displays on the 4th were usually two mortars, hand loaded and fired by two shooters who each carried a red fusee so they could keep track of each other. The shells were usually three-break cylinders, probably four or five inch, and always had a bottom shot, or report, at the end. You never see those anymore, and I miss them. The finale was a preloaded bank of about 20 shots, followed by a big set piece of pinwheels and fountains on a wooden armature.

    • @user-xe5eq9br1c

      there is actually triple break shells out there. many.

    • @bellowphone
      @bellowphone Před 2 lety +19

      @@user-xe5eq9br1c I'm sure there are, but in all the municipal shows I've seen for many years, I haven't seen any. The trend now is just to saturate the sky with fire, and you never get to appreciate an individual shell, like a long lasting willow, because it will immediately get obscured by all the other ones breaking around and through it. People have become jaded, and they expect to see a huge amount of powder burned in very short time. In shows like these today, if there was a triple break shell in there, nobody would even notice it. I would though.
      The rhythm of those shells is etched in my memory.
      Pow... pow... pow........ > BOOM <
      Then a long pause in the silence, to savor the last winking and twinkling sparks drifting down in the sky, before the next shell would go up. If a show was paced that slow today, people would just start booing and get angry.

      @@bellowphone You made me remember the small town shows from the 50's, early 60's. In one small Illinois town my folks always took us to the "homecoming" celebration on the 4th. All the generations of farmers and townsfolk, a small carnival, and the fireworks were never before 10 pm. They were just as you said, and I was in awe of every single aerial. And at the end, the pinwheels on a wooden armature like you said. The crowd and kids sat on the side of the hill cross from the shooters, very close, and there was no delay in the sound. But it was a long slow show.

      @@geezermann7865 Exactly. We're from the same era. I lived in a small town in southern New Jersey. We sat along a beach at a swimming pond, and the show was shot from the opposite shore of the pond, where we had a perfect view.

    Some of the retail shells advertised as larger shells are sometimes much smaller. E.g. they'll put a smaller shell half as big inside of a larger shell casing and fill it to keep it from vibrating. Or just take a smaller shell and wrap it a ridiculous amount of times to the size of the advertised shell.

    Always clean spent lift charge out tube if shooting multiple shells from same tube!!! That sucker was smoking hence something most likely embers in bottom of tube. I use one of those grabbing claws 8-10 times the lift shell inside smoldering. I've had it where I drop another shell in kaboom. Luckily straight up. This why professionals use one shell per tube. Obviously that's costly but take a couple min in-between make sure lift cone out . Earlier on after one fourth I turned over a 6" tube and about 5 cones came out smfh . Be safe God bless

    • @Eazy_Company
      @Eazy_Company Před 2 lety

      It would be quick match. Basically the fuse goes into a paper tube and the additional compression that is caused by it being inclosed makes it burn instantly and violently. Like the rest of the fuse down to the lift charge just instantly explodes. It's not the most satisfying in this video but hearing quick match go has to be one of my favorite sounds.
