Testing the Ryobi Electric Riding Lawn Mower Lithium Ion Battery Conversion 7 months Later

- Last summer, I converted my Ryobi Electric Riding Lawnmower from STUPID lead acid batteries to much more sensible Lithium Ion batteries (LiPo). And it worked great! But a lot of you have asked, how is it going seven months later? Well it was finally dry enough to get the mower out, so this video shows exactly what happened the very first time I pulled it out from the shed and turned it on. Keep in mind, I stored it in the shed without power the entire weekend long.

I see you link a battery monitor, I assume the stock one no longer works with the lithium? I am looking to do an upgrade to mine once my batteries die so trying to get everything lined up
Correct. The stock won’t measure the new batteries correctly.
Do the lithium batteries have a longer run time since they’re lighter? You would think that not hauling extra battery weight would result in less draw from the batteries.
How long does it take to fully charge them?
Yes, overall it does last longer on a single charge than the lead-acid batteries. For exactly the reasons you state. I know some choose to go with 50ah batteries instead, because they'll last as long as the lead-acid 100ah, and it saves a bit of money. But you do take a risk of not having enough continuous draw depending on your mower and the batteries you buy.
If you set the charger to 8a, it'll probably take about 8 hours to get to 100% from 0. You could set to higher for faster speeds, but that's harder on the battery and will reduce life. So personally, I just charge overnight before I intend to mow.
Sorry if I missed it in previous videos. How long (or how much acreage) does the battery run on a charge? Does it deliver on advertised coverage?
@@MDmountain505 That's a hard question to answer because it depends in part on your mower, the batteries you buy, and what your yard is like. If you have steep hills, for instance, you can expect the mower to work harder and die sooner.
But assuming you have the mower I do, and relatively flat land, and the batteries I recommend, you'll easily make it three acres on a single charge. I've seen some say they've made it four acres in a single charge, but that feels a bit lucky.
Ive watched your conversion video multiple times Finally convinced my wife to let me buy everything I need to convert. Thank you so much for the video. I dont know anything about electrical work. Hopefully everything goes smoothly and ill be able to mow everything in one afternoon instead of multiple days.
One question. Does it need to stay on charger like the lead batteries? I saw this video it lasted winter but i wanted to make sure since the batteries are not cheap. Thank you
No it doesn’t! That’s the beauty of ditching lead acid. I only charge it when I have to.
It's fine not to constantly charge. In the Winter I left it unplug the entire season stored in a shed without heat or power.

@@anorakerWhere is “winter” for you? I live in MN…can get to negative 20. My garage never gets that cold, but can still get down to single digits I suppose. Also, will the original gauge give accurate battery readings? My original batteries were the 75A Lead Acid, the new ones are Lithium Fosfate but they are 100A.
When you do the swap, do pay close attention to the end where it didn’t work and Anoraker swapped out the connection from “on” to “Aux”. That’s what I had to do as well.
@@fpartidafpartida Winter for me is Ohio. It gets around -8 at the worst here. But I stored in a wood shed with zero insulation without issue. Just don't try to charge it during the winter in this temperatures.
Does the same batteries work for the RM300E?

is it possible to use 1 battery?
Only if you buy one that has all the power you need in one. But you'll have to do extra work to make it fit properly. Here's a popular option for that:

But it's not the same physical size as the batteries I've shown. So you'll have to figure out how to make it fit properly (tie down straps, etc.). The benefits here though is no need to worry about BMS or balancing, etc.

@@user-oy6uf6pr9i that’s my understanding, though I haven’t done it. Most of the complicated wiring is about getting the multiple batteries to work in series.
