SMT II is the kind of game where the best part is remembering the highlights afterwards. The alignment reps are my favorite in the series, there’s a ton of demons who either get the designs they use to this day or only exist in II, and the world and story are very interesting. I also really like how the gameplay subtly shifts between the routes, where in Law and Chaos you actually get to use the alignment rep as a party member who are as powerful as they should be, while Neutral gets access to every normal demon regardless of the demon’s allignment. Combat is pretty simple, you can basically auto battle everything after the second half when you get some buff-bots online, but that’s not too big of an issue for me. It also helps that there are pretty hard fights that you have to think about. The damning problem of SMT II is exploration. Even when I broke out the guide I was often very confused as to where I was supposed to be going. I also thought the dungeons were pretty agonizing. The very first dungeon in the game features dark zones. The only dungeon I remember not hating was the penultimate one (maybe there were others but that was the only one I remember enjoying). Pan’s Labyrinth deserves a special shoutout for somehow managing to be one of the most obnoxious dungeons in the series despite having no enemy encounters. A big reason I ultimately chose to do Law was that in that route you skip the final dungeon of Neutral and Chaos, but the final boss doesn’t scale down to adjust for a pretty big drop in experience. It would be great is SMT I and II got a remake to patch up their shortcomings, but I don’t see it happening anytime soon.
Chose law because i really liked zayin and i wanted to see where he would go it was the first time i chose law At first i was disaponted because his actions felt out of character after the satan reveal but in the end when he said he would "judge" god it all clicked to me He did all these things so god would appear and he would ultimately have a chance to slay him
I will always remember this as one of the most batshit insane MegaTen games for things like Aleph’s backstory, Zayin’s true identity, Hiroko’s role in the story, and the Law ending.
So fun fact about all those characters who just felt wasted: The GBA and iOS versions of 1 and 2 both have extra unlockable scenes going into stuff like background info on the other characters and what they were up to when the protagonist wasn't around. The 2 scenes continue to exclude pretty much all those characters in favor expanding on the lore of the irrelevant, nameless bishop in around half of them. It's admittedly interesting lore (and it turns out the bishop was so utterly awful that he ended up being one of the main reasons Zayin rebelled and became based) but incredibly silly that this incredibly minor player ends up more fleshed out than actual characters you get to name.
Oh my God, I totally stumbled upon the Law route naturally or organically when playing this thing and it made perfect sense and didn't bother me at all.
The fun part of this game is getting the neutral ending is kinda bad, like is not the a bad ending but is not satisfactory like getting the chaos or law ending
This game has some of the most insane twists I´ve ever seen, it gets amazingly unhinged in the best way posible. 9:58 This was the moment that broke me and forced me to use a guide the first time I played it, I have no idea how they thought people whould figure it out. That being said, it is such a ridiculous place for that pillar to be, that I kina did a 180 and ended up loving it. 11:24 Same, thought It was slightly more acidental on my part. And yes, Zayin is just overall one, if not the best, law representatives and I wish more Law characters were like him. The reveal at the end about who he is, and his rant at the end, are one of my favorite moments on the series. Also, I am surprised that you didnt mentioned: Aleph being an artificially created Messiah and Hiroko being his biological mother. Imo the reveal that the main characters are basically an attempt to recreate the virgin Mary and Jesus is up there as one of the most memorable moments in the sereis.
SMT2 has a pretty good story, and it has probably one of the best Chaos endings in Mainline. My only gripes with SMT2 is, the Scale of it makes backtracking a bit of a pain, and might be a personal thing, but the Soundtrack compared to SMT1 is kind of weak (Minus the Chaos Related Tracks and the normal Battle theme).

It's cool to see you playing some old megaten games you never finished, I actually just got done with the Kyuuyaku version of Digital Devil Story, and it was kind of painful but also really cool! Time to try the sequel which I hear is a surprisingly great entry
Smt 2 is one of the games that I played, I liked and then found that it had burrowed it's way into deep into my heart and I can never let it go. I really like this game's chaos route. Lucifer is suprisingly chill here and when you fight satan he can look at you and you die. (A word of warning, the spell that is supposed to save you from instant death saves you from "expel" and "curse" in this game. Unfortunately, mudo inflicts "death", not curse. Satan has mudo Good luck)
To be honest I love this game, it was the second SMT Game I played, right after 4 Apocalypse. And I loved it, To be honest I'm surprised at how far I got in the game before I needed a guide. Which after exploring Abbadon's Belly. And the finding Lucifer's castle. That was really about it, but I loved the scale of this game and the great reveals.
Smt ii is the only mainline I haven't played yet and I wanna get to it soon. I might replay smt I 1st though. Looking forward to this video once I finish it.
I have such a strange fondness for this game, and nobody talks about it. It does some bold things, is kinda... weird? Just has a lot of stuff I admire and respect or enjoy. Everything is improved from SMT1 basically, OH MY GOD EVERYTHING IS SO MUCH MORE ENJOYABLE. And a best Chaos Route. Easily best alignment.

Don't ask me why but I made sure to beat this game without using a guide,the backtracking and constant trial and error where insane yeah,but somehow I didn't think it was thaaaaat bad at least compared to smt 1 (except that dancing part, that really sucked), probably because it was during vacation so I had infinite free time and all
I’m of the same mind as you that these games are great, but, time has not been kind to certain mechanics. It would be easier for Atlus to just do remakes, because they need a lot more than a few “quality of life” improvements.
The problem is also still possibility ban those games in West (by Sony and Nintendo). I don't know how would be react present Sony or Nintendo. In SMT II you just literally kill God as a Jesus, siding for Lucifer or Satan.

Honestly I'm kinda getting sick and tired of good games getting remade. It really is just companies capitalizing on what already worked rather than fixing something that didn't. SMT1 makes more sense than P3 but P3 reload is happening and doesn't need to. Even then just give me SMT1 with a demon compendium and it would be perfect. NieR Replicant v1.22 happened when Drakengard 2 would've benefited far more and v1.22 cut a lot from combat making it overall worse. Resident evil 1 2 3 and 4 all got remakes while none but the original really needed it. Dead space aged extremely well yet they remade that. With the new one looking negligibly better at best. 9 times out of 10 remakes lose something the original had or change things that were fine or completely botch it all up. I really don't want an SMT1 remake just a port alongside if... and 2. An SMT game I actually want remade is nine. SMT Nine has the potential to only really get better without losing anything and it's story was already good.
But there is one big problem: Persona 3 Reload will sell 10x better than SMT 1, SMT 2 or SMT Nine Remake, and Atlus / Sega know that. Today waifus sell jrpg, not creative game. It's like music, most of people in world like simple pop instead of classical music.
Also, unrelated, but I REALLY dislike the Diamond Realm protag crossover in SMT4A. First of all, Aleph is designated as the LAW-aligned, which is... almost absurd? SMT2 is THE game in which Chaos is pretty much the clear best and most popular choice. Lucifer is flatout a good and kind guy, I love it. Demi-Fiend in it is a magic nuke build. Absolutely anybody can tell you, Demi-Fiend is best as pure physical. Everybody recommends physical, it's quite known he's a freikugal boy. Like... yo, wtf Atlus?
SMT2 was explicitly themed around Law. Same as how Nocturne was themed around Chaos. That's why Aleph is Law in that DLC. Plus the Law ending, while divisive, is nevertheless the most iconic of the three endings in this game. As for the Lucifer is a good guy thing, take this with a grain of salt, but I have heard rumors that the guy who did the fan translation had a heavy Chaos bias and messed with the translation to be more Chaos friendly. Plus if you actually look into his plan even in the translation, he still wants to annihilate Millennium and everyone in it. He pretty much succeeds in the case of Holytown as well; while the shopkeeps remain fine because of course they're immortal, the random NPCs throughout Holytown are all either dead or dying by the end of the game thanks to Lucifer's actions with Moloch in the final arc. He is not the straightforward good guy in 2 like everyone believes.

Also I didn't know about that whole translation thing, if that's true then it prolly explains why soo many people who played SMT 2 think Lucifer is a good guy, Chaos bias is insane bruh
One of the real stand out parts for me was the reveal of Aleph’s full backstory. He has one of the most interesting origins in the series to me

Well Hiroko isn't his biological mother, she just pushed Aleph out of her legs, so it's still really weird, but at least they aren't related.
I really liked smt1 and 2 and never really had any major issues with it and would love them to be remade. I loved going through the abyss
