Originally composed for the acclaimed U.S. Army Band Herald Trumpets, Paul Murtha's dramatic fanfare pays tribute to the heroic men and women of the New York City Fire Department who lost their lives in 2001.

I want to set up a remote-controlled speaker so this plays whenever I enter a room.

    Short, yet amazingly powerful.

I love this piece, and I see that the Euphonium is used as a an octave double to the tuba, but it's still a bit saddening that it gets overlooked.

When I went and looked at the part, it is playing lower than the bass trombone. It could have doubled the horns or the bass bone and Euph could have switched parts.

this should be incorporated into a five mintute full piece. it seems like its just a short thought as it stands

Generally a fanfare is a short piece, meant to evoke a thought of feeling to begin or end a concert or event. The Dallas Wind Symphony hosts a contest for writing fanfares that have a 3.5 minute limit, but many of the winning works don't go much beyond 1.5 minutes.

  • @militarymarchingbandfan9627

Sounds like this was intended for a military style band. The ones from East Texas; they play a short but effective fanfare at the beginning and end of their drill and this is exactly what this reminds me of!

haha poor woodwinds. they get 7-uplets for which they have to practice HOURS to get proper, but in the end they're still only mere icing on the cake, never the star of the piece. no wonder woodwinds hate us brass (and trumpets in particular) :P

The alto flute in G in the "Rite of Spring" has decuplets (10-uplets) during the first oboe solo and it truly changes the entire motion of the piece at that time.
