Many lower limb amputees are older people who've had really bad problems with diabetes and poor circulation. The diabetes often causes other life-threatening problems, such as kidney disease, high blood pressure, heart disease among others. So when you consider that a typical lower limb amputee may be a 75 year old man with heart and kidney problems amongst other health problems, it's becomes easier to see that he may not last until 80.

I read on Wikipedia that many lower limb amputees die within 5 years of the amputation. Is that true and if it is true why?

Nearly half of the individuals who have an amputation due to vascular disease will die within 5 years, usually secondary to the extensive co-morbidities rather than due to direct consequences of amputation. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amputation#:~:text=Nearly%20half%20of%20the%20individuals,colon%20cancer%2C%20and%20prostate%20cancer.
I know im 12 years late but, its not the amputation that kills them, its everything else
