======================
Hey there! We are Nicole and Mico, a #Canadian couple searching for adventures all around the globe. In March 2021 we quit our jobs, sold our belongings, and hopped on our first ever one-way flight. We believe #travel builds understanding that reaches across culture, language, and boundaries, and we want to share our experiences as we create connections all over the world. If you like learning about unique places, new cultures and different foods, then come follow our adventure as we explore all our beautiful planet has to offer.
We LOVED trying Turkish food 🌯🥨🌰 Which one do you think you would like best?
A few tips.
Apple Tea isn't really a thing. Only tourists drink that stuff.
Nobody drinks Raki plain. It is meant to be consumed with mezes and preferably fish. Try it with white cheese and cantelope.
Shawarma is not a Turkish thing. Syrian immigrants sell that stuff. Turks eat Doner. It's basically the same thing but you should be careful where you get it from. There's quite a range of quality and taste with Doner depending on where you get it from.
If you're going to get a durum (wrap) pick a place that makes its own flat bread (lavas).
Stop enabling the annoying ice ream vendors that torture you before they let you have what you payed for half an hour ago. Plus the stuff they serve is markedly sub-par compared to the original stuff sold in Kahramanmaras..
Good simit comes from Ankara. Far higher quality and tastes way better. Istanbul simit sucks.
Try Turkish coffee with sugar. You need to ask for sugar when ordering.
Çay is meant to be consumed in narrow wasted glasses. Coffee cup çay isn't çay. It's like drinking scotch from a champagne glass.
Ayran isn't youghurty. It is yoghurt + water and a pinch of salt. Should try it with kebabs. Goes great with hot dogs too.
Wow thank you for the detailed information! We hope other people use this to help guide their food journey in Turkey. We didn't know simit was better in Ankara. We definitely have to try that. Do you know what the specialties are on the coast? (Izmir, Antalya etc) It seems like it always differs slightly by region.
@@nicoleandmico Glad to help out.
Izmir:
Stuffed Mussels, Fried Mussels (Midye Tava), Fried Kalamari, (these are exceptionally fresh and tender in Izmir), Octopus, all other seafood. Greasy pastry called "boyoz" for breakfast. A beer and fries or Raki and mezes along the "Kordon".
Wild boar at Şirince (need to ask before going as it depends on whether or not hunters have shot one). You can also get excellent wines at Şirince. Worth the trip just for the wines and scenery.
Also try Kumru which is basically the pinnacle of how good a toastie/panini can be.
Antalya:
Excellent authentic village breakfast in the mountains.
Awesome all-inclusive resorts. Great golf courses. Insane tennis facilities (there's a hotel with 52 clay tennis courts)
Donerciler Carsisi: A mall with like 50 doner restaurants.
Nice places in the marina and old town inside the citadel.
If you will go any farther East along the coast then Antakya (ancient Antioch) and Iskenderun (ancient Alexandretta) are must see places. All of the Hatay province is basically a must see.
Try everything on this website :
blog.biletbayi.com/hatay-yoresel-yemekleri.html/
Especially Kunefe which is one step below heaven.
Amazing thank you for the tips and sharing it with everyone here. We love learning more about the culture and we're grateful you've taken the time to help us dive deeper. Thank you!
@@nicoleandmico Happy to help. Enjoy your trip. Stay safe.
Love the list so you hit all the food goal places. Your food day looked like it was super fun. The giant pretzel, pide as well as those stuffed mussels would be items I'd have on a must try list.
Yes we were so impressed that we managed to find all that food! So many delicious restaurants and places to eat in Istanbul. And your list sounds excellent. Those three would probably be the first things we would get when we come back next time 😁
Some of the local delicacies :
1. Bursa İskender Kebab and Alinazik Kebab - 2. Gaziantep Yaprak Sarması and Biber Dolması - 3. Kayseri Mantı - 4. Konya Lamb Tandır - 5. Vali Kebab (mixed kebab) - 6.Blacksea Pide or Konya Pide - 7. Raki, Fish and Appetizers - 8. Kayseri Yağlama-Develi Cıvıklısı - 9. Mediterranean olive oil foods (Enginar-Kereviz-Türlü-Börülce-) - 10. Turkish Breakfast - 11.Kunefe-Baklava-Pumpkin Dessert in Lime- Kastamonu Helva - 12.Dry beans and rice - 13.Trabzon Hamsili Pilav, Kaygana, Kuymak, Laz Böreği - 14.Drinks: Şalgam, Ayran, Raki, Turkish Wine, Boza, Salep, Turkish tea-coffee :)
And many more local flavors :)
Amazing list I'm planning to travel in June and will be working through this list 😌
I just saw this comment again and now I want some Turkish food!!! 😋
Turkey is a very safe country. Almost no crime. They have the best food in the world. Their breakfasts are very wholesome and wonderful and very welcoming to tourists. They do not discriminate based on religion, language or race. They say that he who eats and sleeps when his neighbor is hungry is not one of us.
That sounds exactly like the Turkey we experiences. We felt so welcome in Turkey and are already looking forward to visiting again one day!
@@nicoleandmico 1. İskender Kebab and Alinazik Kebab - 2. Yaprak Sarması and Biber Dolması - 3. Mantı - 4. Lamb Tandır - 5. Vali Kebab (mixed kebab) - 6.Blacksea Pide or Konya Pide - 7. What a great mix of food! There is so much we ate but we always discover that there are so many more delicacies that we have to try. Thank you for the recommendations - this is enough for even a part 2!
@@nicoleandmico You are welcome. Good luck. Bon Appetit :)
Love, love, love semmit - and the tea, pomegranate juice is awesome! We didn't try the chestnuts. We literally have a similar video lined up waiting since we're so far behind in our travels. Really enjoyed this guys!
The food was so delicious. Can't wait to see that video too! 😋
@@nicoleandmico We DID NOT enjoy the Aryan...at all lol but the one we got was in a cup like with a tin cover! Really enjoying your newest videos guys!
Haha yes the Ayran was good but it certainly wasn't at the top of our list of favorite Turkish foods 😅 We're glad you enjoyed 😊
Oh wow so glad we found your channel! Love a good food blog… and you guys do it so well 🙌🙌🙌
Awe thanks! Next time we will do fewer foods in one day so we aren't quite so stuffed 😄
You can't have Ayran alone guys you need to have it with a spicy kebab food. Like if you had next to adana kebab you might like it :) also it does take time to like it but of course is not for everyone.
Wow that is great advice. Having the ayran with spicy food would be even better! Thank you for sharing that 😊
Totally agree. It's an acquired taste! ☺️
Wow this looks so amazing! What an incredible experience! The dough with the meat and cheese looks sooo good!! Turkish ice cream looks delicious too!
They were all so good! However we agree that the meat and cheese pide was 100 % DELICIOUS 🤤🤤
Love that you had a list!!! You’re better than me, I can’t do the Turkish coffee! Too bitter and I wouldn’t sleep for a week!! Great tour and food tour. We can’t wait to get back and visit Istanbul. 🍻
The Turkish coffee can be a bit of a jolt! We are coffee lovers though which probably helped us to enjoy it. We hope you can get back to visit Istanbul before too long!
Great to see your vlog and am seriously feeling hungry 😋... thanks for sharing the mind blowing turkey delicacies 👌👌🧡...
Haha sorry to make you hungry! We were stuffed by the end of the day 😆🙃
OMG I would definitely want the simit! That looked SOOO good!
The simit, despite being so simple, was VERY delicious. It was perfect!
Yes it is definitely so much good you need to taste it
Good information definitely gonna follow list on my trip to Istanbul
Awesome, enjoy all the wonderful food!
SO much love on the food. . . .. Keep vlogging and more adventures buddy. . . .. I love turkish coffee. Leep safe
The turkish coffee was awesome! Thanks for watching and there will be many more adventures to come 👀😁
Travel vlog aaand food vlog, yessssss
Two for one! Yes!
Fantastic video !! you realize, there is a lot of effort in this video. Go on with concept like this, i wish you very luck and health. 💪🙏
It took a bit of time but we enjoyed making the video and are glad that it's entertaining to watch, not just for ourselves, but others too. Thank you 😊
Shawarma is an Arabic rendering of Turkish çevirme „turning“. Döner kebap also means turning meat dish
Thank you for the information😊 We have come to know more and more about Turkish food even after posting this video 😆 the done kebap was amazing!
What a cute couple :) ı hope u enjoyed ur time in Turkey, gl with your channel :)
Thank you very much!
Omgg ok, so for sure David would love to try that coffee and for me I would go for the turkish apple tea, it looks awesome and I am a bit tea addicted. As per food Shawarma looks pretty interesting but we would try everything probably heheh!
I'm sure you would love it all! We found there to be so much variety with Turkish food which makes a great cuisine for visitors!
bon apatitte with all foods and drinks espc. for the Raki guys.
So many delicious foods and lots of variety. Amazing. 🙌 🇹🇷
Great video! Keep it going! Normally we're drinking Rakı with Mezes(Sides), it's going well with it. It is not something I would recommend for drinking without any food & snacks because it is very strong. Greetings from London :)
That is definitely good advice! On its own, Raki was awfully strong! Next time we will definitely add some sides to it and I have a feeling we will enjoy it more. Thanks for the advice!
The oriental music is arabic not turkish, not part of the turkish culture and doesn't really match the vibe, maybe use it for Egypt if you visit there once. Also Shawerma is arabic not turkish if that's what they told you it is then it was most probably a Syrian restaurant, the turkish version is called Döner or Dürüm..
Thanks for the feedback! We are hoping to head to Egypt next month so we keep these songs in mind for those videos. Cheers!
Bu kadar hasas olmaya gerek yok doğu da bu müzikler var ve arap müziği ve türk müzigi benzerlikler taşıyor ayni yemekler gibi her türk şarkisi tarkan sezen aksu değil.
Yes, Döner Dürüm is Turkish i can not understand why people say Döner Shawarma and Turks are not Arab. Turks are Turkic Folk.
For baked potato (kumpir) , you guys need to check out “ortakoy square”. You would be seeing multiple open stands making kumpir
Great advice! We will definitely check this out when we come back to Istanbul! Any special recommendations for restaurant?
@@nicoleandmico No, there are Kumpir (baked potato) stands lined up, like 20 of them. All are the same. But you shouldn't leave Istanbul without eating one
I can't believe we didn't find them! Next time we are in Istanbul we will definitely give kumpir a try 😁
The nearby mosque is a beautiful spot. Many of those kumpir stands are decorated with colors of the local football (soccer) clubs.
Wow we had no idea! The shop keepers can be so creative 😋
Sounds tempting
We would only suggest not trying to do all 18 in a day. We were so full 😆
Raki is not like solo chilling drink. Actually you drink that with lots of traditional appetizers and main course(usually fish). Its our bad cuz most of tourists dont like it cuz we are just recommending it without saying how actually locals drink it. Note: using shawarma or shuvurma instead of kebab whatever it is.triggered me :P
Thanks for the tip! We will definitely have to do it again but with some fish which we love! 😊
Nice Vlog again and nice to see that you taste many dishes but you forget baked potatoes ( KUMPIR ) and please dont say to our "Döner Kebap" , Shawarma ,) thanks for the good Job ...I am shure you will have in a short time many subscribers ))
Thanks so much the foods were so delicious! We are so sad that we couldn't find the baked potato 🥔 Do you have any good recommendations for places we can get the Kumpir?
@@nicoleandmico In Ortaköy near the Bosphorus bridge are many many KUMPIR Shops and after Kumpir you can go to a nice Rooftop Bar with live music there ;)
Wow that's sounds amazing! We did a rooftop bar in our previous Istanbul vlog and absolutely loved it! Okay we will check it out next time we are back 😀 thank you for the recommendation!
@@nicoleandmico Yes, but your Rooftop Bar was very expensive ;)
We'll definitely have to check out the other ones then! 😆
The name of the potatoes and the sauces on the kampir. You can also find Besiktas Ortaköy.
Fantastic, thank you!! Hopefully we can get our hands on it one of these days! We would love to give it a try
Thank you! 😊
Kumpir not kampir.
@@cobrastallone86 Thanks!
GOOD JOB !
You definitely do not want to drink Raki alone, it goes amazing with fish or assorted nuts, cheese and melon/watermelon
Melon sounds so good! We will definitely try it paired with something in the future 😂
Great video, that Pide looked absolutely amazing. I was supposed to go to Istanbul last year but my trip was cancelled, looks amazing! Have you visited the blue mosque?
It's too bad your trip was canceled last year! We really love Istanbul, it has such a distinct feeling to it. We hope you get there soon! We tried to visit the Blue Mosque on three different occasions and it was closed all three times for renovations. We were able to get into Hagia Sophia though and that was amazing. Such a gorgeous mosque!
@@nicoleandmico hopefully soon! Oh that’s a shame, it’s annoying when things are closed for refurbs, Ive subscribed so I’ll look forward to future videos :)!
Awesome, thanks for joining us!
The best
It was so much food!! We loved it! 😍
Needs lots of ices . İf ices melts geting better :) rakı iz best . İ m still drinking in us
I bet ice does make it better! It would make it much less strong. We will have to give it another chance one of these days with some ice
May Allah SWT bless Turkey and its beautiful people from Pakistan 🙂🇵🇰🇹🇷🤩😍. As a Pakistani I fully support love respect and support Turkey and its beautiful people from Pakistan 🙂🇵🇰🇹🇷🤩😍.
You need to go to Ortaköy (beşiktaş) for baked potato. It is called "Kumpir"
Yes we saw that word often and never knew what it was. Thank you for telling us! We will have to order it next time we can
So yummy
So delicious we couldn't get enough 😋
Beautiful
Thank you!
The name of that potato is kumpir, you could find it on the internet, it's very delicious, you missed a lot
Wish we could have found it!
Dude, that dish isn't called shawarma. We don't change the name of the burger and give it a weird name. Burger is called burger, doner is called doner, and it's a Turkish dish.
Thanks for letting us know! We are learning so much about the food and we're glad there are people helping us correct our mistakes. Thanks!
good
We are glad you enjoyed 😉
Eye lyke Turkiey 👍
Thanks for watching!
🤗🤗🤗💯💖
😊😊😊
The Baked Patato are called in türkey Kumpir .
In Ortaköy is the best Kumpir.
Thanks for the recommendation! We will check this out when we come back to Istanbul! 🙌
Good to know! Thank you!
Great food tour👌. I can't wait to go to Istanbul. You now have a New subscriber. Hello from Ireland ☘✌.
Thank you for subscribing. We would love to make it to Ireland one day too🙌 If we do you will have to let us in on the best local dishes 😁🤤
Baked potatoes : you should go to Ortaköy, one of the best in İstanbul .Too many toppings to choose from
Wow we would love to do that. Any special toppings that we NEED to try? We love getting recommendations!
@@nicoleandmico it actually depends upon your personal preferences, you could try “kısır’, that ressembles to ‘tabouleh ‘ I can say which is typical Turkish .Russian salad, peas, extra cheese ,cornichons, olives, spicy paste and many others …There are really lots of varieties to choose from
Thanks for the tips. We will take note and try it next time we are in Ortakoy!
Raki und Meze
Evet bir dahaki sefere farklı mezelerle deneyeceğiz! İzlediğiniz için teşekkürler! 🤗
Salep içmenizi tavsiye ederim,
Tavsiye için teşekkürler. Bir dahaki gelişimizde bu içeceği deneyeceğiz. 😊👍
Ayran is good for all the spices you eat with kebabs or pides. I wouldnt go out and drink just a cup ayran.
That makes much more sense! On it's own we were not the biggest fans (as you saw in the video), but we can imagine it would be much better paired with a pide or kebab. Next time we are in Turkey we will give it a try!
What is shwarma? It is durum.
Yes you are right! The shawarma is Arabic we learned and the doner is Turkish. 😋
We love trying all the street food 😃Sub’d😃 We are headed there soon and your video made me excited to try everything. Maybe not all in one day LOL. Great video. Hey check out our videos 😎
Oh good! We highly suggest trying all these foods over many, many days 😂 Have an awesome time in Istanbul and thanks for joining our journey!
How much did everything cost ?
In the end everything came to around 430 lira
@@nicoleandmico Ow wow that’s so affordable . Thanks 🙏 I’m planning a trot here and I just wanted an estimate on how much I would be spending there
That's great we're sure you'll have an amazing time 👏 Also note that the value of the turkish lira has changed a lot since we were last there so prices may have too. Enjoy your trip! 😊
My uncle is getting married soon. Can everyone pray so that everything goes well thank you
Good luck! 😁
Hi u 2 cuties. Just want to say: Nicole u have just beautiful eyes.
That is very kind, thank you! 😊
You can find potato ( Kumpir ) in Ortaköy.
Thank you so much! Next time we are in Istanbul we will try some for sure
@@nicoleandmico We are waiting for you again :)
Türkçe alt yazı eklermisiniz
Aslında bunu yapmayı kaçırdığımız için çok üzgünüz! Videoya Türkçe altyazı ekledik. Söylediğin için teşekkürler
None of these things you try are Turkish cuisine.
these are more of a snack
Good point! 18 full meals in one day would have been a lot 😅
İts just çay . Not chay tea
It's funny you mention this because a few days after making this video we learned we were basically saying "tea tea" by saying "çay tea" 😂 There is a lot to learn when traveling!
C’est de la marde!
