  • Mike Duncan is one of the foremost history podcasters in the world. His award-winning series The History of Rome (thehistoryofrome.typepad.com/) set the standard for episodic narrative history and inspired a generation of listeners.
In this talk he shares his thoughts on why we create and listen to podcasts. Why do we make podcasts? Why do we listen to podcasts? What does it mean to the community? What does it mean to an individual? What does it mean for us here today? In short, Duncan asks, what is the point of all this?

Mike is a great person and a great example to all of us! I wish more people had watched this speech. The world would've become a better place. I myself found my purpose in life just a year ago, and this is such a great feeling!

I am sure this is true for a lot of people but Mike has been with me for a long time now. He is not just knowledgeable but possesses an actual wisdom. He is on my list of people that I would love to sit down and have dinner with. Thanks for all the free entertainment and knowledge over the years, Mike.

Thank you, professor Mike. I have listened to your voice explain the historic background for so many events. 2 complete Rome, 2 complete revolutions, TSBTS, and Lafayette.
We need an award for this accomplishment

I’m a longtime podcast, and especially history podcast, fan. On occasion I’ve tried to explain what’s so great about them to non-listeners. It was wonderful to hear an explanation from the creator side, and especially from Mike Duncan - one of the most thoughtful folks in the field :-)

David Crowther from the History of England gives Mike a run for his money. They are equal in my book

27:12 Did anyone notice that podcast creator Ben Wilson of the now-famous “How To Take Over The World” Podcast, is seated in the audience in the red and black shirt? He must have been taking good notes…

19th century workers such as smiths, if they could afford it, used to pay a boy to read to them while they worked.

Growing up in THE formerly shoe making town back in that time, that was certainly true in Massachusetts.

This sounds incredibly interesting, I never knew! Do you know of any source where I might read up on that? Google didn't yield any results (at least not with my phrasing)

@@iancogneeto can't find a source for it. It was something I heard Noam Chomsky say.
