- The cast of Ghosts return to the BFI Southbank to talk about their latest Christmas special in an event hosted by lead programmer Justin Johnson.
It’s Christmas at Button House, and Mike and Alison are heading to Mike’s parents to celebrate with family. Alison promises the Ghosts that they’ll be back by the evening and lets them know that each has a Christmas surprise in the Library. The Ghosts are touched and inspired to give Alison a special Christmas present to remember - but can they pull off their ambitious idea in time? The hit comedy show follows up its fourth series with this special Christmas episode.

There is DEFINITELY no such thing as too many series of Ghosts! I could watch a hundred years of it.
Sadly it was confirmed on Friday 31st March that S5 is to be the last season. Lot of people are hoping it was an early April Fools' but I've. some to realise it probably isn't. Gutted, but understand they want to finish on a high and not have it drag on with mediocre seasons (kind of what happened with the HH reboot. Still good but nowhere near peak S2-5 with these guys). Hope they decide to revisit the concept in the future with a movie (apparently they're up for doing that if they can get the funding) or a spin-off series, a revival in a decade, even a West End immersive thing like Stranger Things is doing.
@@oliviadaly4795 I know about Ghosts ending after the next series. I get it too. They are all so talented, every single one of them, that they would want to stretch themselves in other roles. I thought I was upset when Mary was sucked off; there will be tears I think when I watch the last episode.

I'm really going to miss Katie as Mary innocently discussing being sucked off. It was always a great laugh, but when it happened to Mary, I cried. I was so tickled to have the plague crew back and they made a terrific audience. And I'm thrilled there will be a series 5 for us to watch end of next summer.
I agree. And I really like the plague pit ghosts, but now Katie won't be there I suppose. (It took me ages to realize Mick is Matt!)
i think they should go into in next season why some of them get sucked off and why others dont and why they have to wait so long for it to happen. its surprising that they havent talked about that already. it could be an interesting episode or episodes. also i thought about when mary got sucked off, they should actually be happy for her considering she had been stuck there for like 400 years and a lot of that time she was almost alone forced to remember how she died every day and everyone of her family being dead for centuries. kinda hellish really. now she can finally be reunited with her husband and kids (hopefully). i mean i know its a comedy show but since that episode was a bit sad and somewhat serious i thought i'd mention that train of thought.

Having lost my mother earlier this year, this 4th season of Ghosts hit me a little harder, especially the 4th episode and the Christmas Special.
I cried a lot with these episodes, but I really love how the topics of grief and loss and family are dealt with ❣
I hope that we will get many more seasons ❤❤
On the plus side, you must be pleased to learn that she can go to the toilet 🤭

I'm so sorry for your loss. My husband took his life the summer before last and when I clicked on this and saw "Humphrey" (his name escapes me at the moment) speaking it made my heart jump and my blood run cold because he looked EXACTLY like my husband. It messed with my head. Sometimes life knocks you off the horse and it takes a long time to get back in the saddle. I'm only now coming back to Earth. Care for yourself the way you would your best friend, and allow yourself to feel your feelings. ❤️

I think his laugh's gotten deeper too. So happy to have met him and made him laugh (but annoyed I didn't know he gives hugs. I met him & Ben at a podcast and didn't see him giving hugs to anyone so didn't ask. I could see Ben hugging loafs of people)
Of all the characters, Robin is my favourite. He the oldest and clearly the wisest.

I so so love ghost....every single character is absolutely. Best thing on TV and Ive watched all the series and christmas specials over and over again. We need more, more, more ghosts on TV please. Alison is an amazing leading lady that keeps the interaction with the ghosts feel real. I even watched the American version....."Damn your eyes!", "Moonah", "Alison Alison", (the Captain and Lady Button) brilliant.
They are so special for many people, include me. Everything that they touch became a sucess! Congratulations from your fans in Brazil!

I am THE biggest The Detectorists fan. And THE biggest Gone Fishing fan. And yet this was my favourite special of all. Have loved every series. And rather like the other two, you get a sense that the whole team have a fantastic time, with masses of respect and love for each other. Brilliant stuff. Thank you. :)

"We trim more Fanny than we keep." 🤣....They've done a couple of Ghosts books now. I reckon they should do a third one with all the Fanny double entendres they couldn't use because they were deemed to be going too far! In Robin's words, "I'd buy that!".
Why is it so popular? Because we all want to see ghosts and these ones all have great backstories, interesting, fun, sad interesting, I love Robin the most. I hope the series last for many seasons. xxx love from Canada 🇨🇦

Laz & Ben are such sweethearts (I'm sure the others are too) Met them at a podcast and made Laz laugh cos I was an honoury Butt Ho (I wore a Butt Ho hoodie) and got to hug Ben. Both wonderful people

They did say in a podcast they would love for the door to be open for the UK stars to guest star on the US version after Mat did. Now they have more free time (they announced S5 is the final series) maybe they can all pop up in the US series. Or (somehow, not sure how it would work with ghosts being bound to where they live) have a one hour crossover special episode!

Hi from NYC! Saw the special through...methods...and liked it a lot, although like the Tesco's question in this video it was very very English and a little harder to follow than the other specials. I mean, I think I'm more informed than the average American about pantomime and I was still lost for a LOT of it! But thanks for this video, which is not location-restricted thank goodness.
Plus I just realized that the Farnsbys, the rich American rival neighbors, might have been named after Simon Farnaby. D'oh!

I wonder whether there’s room for a new series of NEW ghosts, played by the team, of other ghosts from other places? I remember one of the team said thy didn’t think there was anywhere else they could take the story of Button House. This way, we could still enjoy the actors, but they would be acting out other characters, maybe historical ones? The possibilities would then be endless. 😊

Usually the U.S. version of a BBC show is bad. Very, very bad. I actually love both of these shows. I can not wait for new episodes from both!!!
It's not just BBC shows, very few British shows from any network survive a remake.
I'm in US. Hollywood doesn't understand BBC Ghosts. It lacks heart, and seems like the characters don't care for each other. They came close when Sasappis tells his story. Otherwise, it's usually a dud. Their Alison - Sam is way too upbeat, and unrealistic.
@YagwitOG I agree with that. I do enjoy it but you can definitely feel the lack of chemistry/closseness.
Feels a bit like amateur-period-actors-in-costume sometimes rather than them being actual people who've been stuck with each other for ages (cos of the chemistry of the UK cast who've been best friends/working together since 2009)

They're airing S1-4 this autumn/fall in the US on CBS because of the strikes
@@oliviadaly4795 Are you referencing the US version of Ghosts? I watch the BBC version, but HBOMax has not yet brought out Season 4 which aired in the UK, I think, last fall.
I always enjoyed the differences in the characters perspective from their own times and cultural differences. but as the seasons went on, I felt that those differences disappeared and they all appeared to not be from different centuries anymore, with their linguistic nuances and cultural perspectives, which was a shame. I realise that they would have gotten used to their new way of life/death there, but I didn’t want their past influences to disappear altogether either. it absolutely loved the show!
Love the show, including and particularly the incomparable Charlotte Ritchie, who cannot be comped.

I do too. People seem to be funny about only liking one over the other but I think they're both great in their own way for different reasons. They aren't identical twins, they're fraternal. 🙂
@@rosequartz4102I love this. Fraternal not identical twins. They're both great, although I prefer the UK version. If people trest them the same they will be disappointed as they're written for different senses of humour etc

You can get region free DVD players quite cheap these days. And then you don't have to wait til a US playable DVD comes out
Watched the 2022 Christmas special and thought why not have the characters discuss performing another pantomime next Christmas ? Seen as the Captain was in charge of things get Thomas to say "Captain, next year I'd like to give you my Dick Whittington" 🧐

We Are Not Alone. It's a post alien invasion comedy on Dave/ UKTV Play.
It only had 3 episodes (well 1 pilot movie which was later split into 3 episodes) and Dave decided not to pick it up. Ben and Larry said at a live podcast event (I was at and got to meet them after) they're shopping the scripts etc elsewhere and it was a a financial thing rather than a rejection

Without a doubt, one of the best shows on television of the past 10 years.
Now, you Brits need to learn how to do more than 6/7 episodes a series... ;) I mean, we get 20-25 here in the states every years. It's not too much to ask.
We're about quality, not quantity ;)
There’s a reason the shows produced by the BBC are leagues above any generic garbage American companies mass produce, and it’s because they put time and effort into making a few incredible episodes as opposed to 30 episode seasons of crap
