en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galaga
Galaga (ギャラガ Gyaraga?) is a fixed shooter arcade game developed and published by Namco in Japan and published by Midway in North America in 1981. It is the sequel to Galaxian, released in 1979. The gameplay of Galaga puts the player in control of a spacecraft which is situated at the bottom of the screen. At the beginning of each stage, the area is empty, but over time, enemy aliens arrive in formation, and when all of the enemies arrive on screen, they come down at the player's ship in formations of one or more, and may either shoot it or collide with it. During the entire stage, the player may fire upon the enemies, and when all enemies are vanquished, the player will proceed to the next stage.
Galaga is one of the most successful games from the golden age of arcade video games. The arcade version of it has been ported to many consoles, and it has had several sequels.
In 2011, the game celebrated its 30th anniversary with the release of Galaga 30th Collection for iOS.

There were certain sounds that were synonymous with arcades back in the day and those emanating from a Galaga cabinet were among the most recognisable.
So true! The (other) most evocative ones for me are Robotron, Defender and Star Wars. And I guess Pac Man and Space Invaders too, especially for earlier memories. Ah, and the music to Pole Position!
@@Hologhoul There are quite a few that are etched into the consciousness of those who were around to hear them back in the day. Robocop, Rastan, Space Harrier, Bubble Bobble, Moon Patrol, Track and Field, Punch Out, Out Run etc.
Nice examples. I've recently rediscovered Moon Patrol, good game. I feel lucky to have experienced growing up through all this, a magical time.
Moon Patrol still holds up well today, both in terms of its sounds and gameplay.
It does! I've recently been playing the arcade game but also the VCS one is another nice conversion, complete with decent physics and inertia on the moon buggy.
"That man is playing Galaga."
"Thought we wouldn't notice, but we did."
Haha marvel reference
That C64 version went through a few revisions. I had a version with the same block graphics, but they added a few random colors to the ships/aliens. Then there was a version called Galaxy that was published by Kingsoft which had actual graphics, but all the aliens in each swarm were single-colored. Finally there was Fire-Galaxy by Kingsoft which had multiple alien colors.
As far as I can remember, they never changed the attack patterns, so they all played the same on every stage.
The NES version looks pretty good, a system that many owned in the western world in the 1980's.
Liked the vid and watched the first 15 or so, can't believe that in a Galaga comparison you didn't manage to get the ship captured to get the double ship which is one of the defining game play elements of the game.
That was the most memorable thing in the game and yet he managed to avoid showing it.
Lance Dahren yeah but that’s no really the point of the video
Every time you just mindlessly shot down the ships in the back without even letting them show off the ship capturing mechanic, my teeth clenched just a little bit more tightly.
Aye; supposed to be playing it to show off the differences, not for fun. :P
@J-C L and then when trying to rescue the captured fighter, you have to time your shot just right. If not you'll mess around and shoot the enemy and your fighter too. Getting 1,000 points for shooting your own fighter is not cool.
LoL
I remember playing those arcade games on my Nintendo DS!
I like how they each try to replicate the theme as best they could.
That actually wasn't the emulation of either the DS or the game itself, it was actually the resolution of the DS being too small to show the game 1:1 as the arcade cabinet would. However, there is an option to display the game sideways at a 1:1 resolution, with the DS being held sideways.
34:10 Woah, that version looks great.
It was a remake made in 1996. I remember playing this with my brother on the GameCube many years ago. I might try to get him to play it with me again.
Before it was on Namco Museum, It was apart of a coin-op arcade game called the Namco Classics Collection Vol. 1
AxlWolfU no this one does 2:05
30:37 nice shot
Love your channel. One of the best on CZcams
The great and old Galaga^^
Many coins and hours in this arcade^^
Sovellusten
かっこいい!
The sea SG-1000 and the Casio version look very similar
As does the MSX ;) I believe similiar chip-sets/hardware..
This as always was great; however, I do have one small complaint. I wish these were done in order of their release to the public. For example Galaga released on the Nes before the Gameboy. Other than that, thank you for sharing this with us.
I never played a Gameboy back then or since, but looking at videos I'm really impressed by what it could do.
Just found your channel thanks to Slope's Game Room mentioning it in their Double Dragon episode, and you're doing great work here. Keep it up, this stuff is fascinating!
Thanks !! :D I'm glad you are enjoying it ! & thanks for letting me know about the mention ! :)
Gaming History Source. I love this game called galaga :-)
Great game, i played it so much on the MSX
MSX is very underrated
I remember the original version of this video...
And was the resolution for the 50th anniversary that small?
Nice video.
But I think you should set the MSX emulator to run in 60 hz, since that's the way it runs in Japan, home country of the platform.
In the early 80s i loved to play video games and wants to find out what is possible with the current hardware. The Commodore PET/CBM 3008 with 8 Kbytes RAM and 40x25 chars offers all characters to use a 80x50 resolution but had no sound. WIth a simple Line-Out there was a chance to use the Compact-Cassette recorder noise over an external amplifier. I realy liked the game a lot because it is playable and even after 35 years there are still some players, crazy thoughts and ports by others (C64,Atari).
My version for the C64 is called Galaxy and it was released by Kingsoft.
- For the PET/CBM version i got the order of the C64 version.
- For the C64 Version i got the C64.
Together it shows me what to do in the future.
I love you gaming source
The PlayStation 4 recently added Galaga to the PlayStation store, and it's only $2.99 I believe, and it has very nice sound quality and resolution. It most closely resembles the Sega Dreamcast version
Just like Arkanoid, Galaga is highly popular
I love Galaga! Did you know that you can hold up to eight lives?
It was one of my dad's favorites back in the day 🙂
Galaga is my favorite game besides Mappy! I've never heard of Zalagan though...e-e XD
How fitting to release this video to coincide with the game's 35th anniversary. I doubt it was intentional, though.
The world , may never know. >_
You make the best Let's Compare videos ever!!! 😉
Thank You ! I'm glad you enjoy them !
I'm crying, I WANNA PLAY THIS AGAIN ;(
I wish you had included Deluxe Galaga on the Amiga.
Turbo grafx 16 had a version
The *very first* game I've *ever* played.
Galaga arrangement should have been arcade to
25:17 wow that nes version look great = - D
But if it’s nes then why the side screens say
Sharp X68000
It’s the Sharp X6800, very similar but for real and different sounds.
There's 1 last iOS App Store game that you forgot to mention. (I'm not even sure if it's on the US app store any more tbh) It's GalagaXTekken. :)
NES version was phenomenal.
Nothing beats that classic 7800 gem
Honestly, Galaga Arrangement is my favorite variant of this game. Nearly defeated the final boss on that one.
The home brew versions look more like they are made to run on a ZX81 or TRASH-80 Model III! LOL
potatoegirlewelynin
This is Like SPACEINVADERS
the commodore 64 would mak a great alarm clock!
The part with Galaga arrangement should have had arcade with Xbox ps2 windows gamecube
The Game Boy version sounds like the NES Version
I didn't know Radio Shack had a TRS-80 color monitor. The old green and white DOS screen introduced me to computers. Thank God for Windows.
I’ve played Galaga on a hell ton of ports. I’ve played the Arcade port, original gameboy port, NES port, the DS port, and the GBA (both normal and 50th anniversary) ports
Galaga was hard for a lot of the early PC's to smoothly emulate. The Atarisoft C-64 version of Galaxian sucked, I think thats why they never made a version of Galaga for it. The NES cartridge was the first port I thought got it almost right. And I forgot about Champ DOS games, their shareware games were very popular with my PC user group in the 1990's. And I remember the C=64 homebrew. There were a couple of variations of it redone with a black background and color graphics. Update: Here's a better version of it czcams.com/video/J_fZ4MwRwzc/video.html
2017's Galencia is the best Galaga game on the C64 by far.
This can also be found on the Roku streaming player and it's one the better versions out there .
You forgot the Sharp MZ-1500 and MZ-2500 versions, though it's understandable if you skipped the latter because it's near identical to the X1 version.
There's also an extremely rare, undumped version for the Hitachi MB-S1. Only a couple of photos exist, located here: galagamaniax.web.fc2.com/another/ano_isyoku/ano_isyoku.html From what I can tell, a pretty good port. You can also see images of the MZ versions there.
Where is the Atari 2600 version?
Oh wait it doesn’t exist
But it does, it’s just a homebrew
And I just realized Atari 2600 Galaga is called Galagon.
I loved Edgar Vidal's Warblade or Deluxe Galaga on Amiga and eventually PC.
Finally!!! thx
The GBA 50th anniversary is either not emulated well or ported very badly cause both the audio and the graphics seemed to have gotten a downgrade. The version shown from the PSP Battle Collection (I suppose that's supposed to be the newer version) looks like something hastily made with Game Maker or something. Even the Atari 8 bit version looks more pleasing to me.
On the other hand, the arranged version that was included in the Namco Museum games for 6th generation consoles sounds and looks really good and seems to hold well on its own. I also saw that the N64 and Dreamcast versions seemed to have a slightly slower version of Galaga compared to the Playstation version of Namco Museum.
All in all, an interesting comparison video. I feel ashamed that I've been playing games for decades but admittedly never played Galaga. I should fix that soon!
Workingplayer53 riirl52
The NES rom was used on the My Arcade Galaga game.
hola wingnut! how about making a comparision of Circus Charlie? i just know that NES and arcade versions are amazingly different :)
noted. :)
Racing Pistely Seurue
please add release years for each version in info section in parenthesis
Let's Compare Cannon Fodder
and bbcmicro looks pretty good but its so fastttt
Liki Suden
AWESOME
That first c64 port holy shit this looks like it could have been made in 1975 but someone clearly liked it coz in 2013 it was ported to the atari 800 with no improvements.
Look at the c64 player
Come on, it was from 1982, the year the C64 was released.
In all probability it's actually the PET or C16 version ported over. The Atari 8-bit version appears to be roughly the same game.
That said, for all the crudeness of graphics it appears to be a pretty playable version with the motion of waves well represented. About the only thing I could zing it for is the aspect ratio being off.
To me, the gameplay is still there, and to be that's far more important than graphics. However if you want to play a good version of Galaga, play the clone Galencia which was released in 2017. What a game that is
The best Galaga ports in my opinion are:1. PlayStation/Arcade, 2. SG 1000, and 3. Xbox/PS2/Gamecube with Galaga Arrangement.
Interestingly, the Sharp X68000 version is graphically identical to the NES version, which came out three years after the former version. Also, compared to the former version, the audio was better on the latter version.
Atari 7800, so smooooth!
Vincent GR what about Atari 2600?
I heard you aren't going to do a let's compare new rally x. Correct?
I'm not sure. Haven't really thought about it. Who said I wasn't going to do it ?
Gaming History Source well, I remember the time where you made a let's compare rally x, and you said to google it.
I'll look into it but I'm very busy so it may take a while.
The c64 version makes me wonder if there is a version for the commodore PET.
I love this game called galaga
You realy have to check oft Deluxe Galaga for the Amiga.
i did. The game play was too different. That is why I didn't include it.
+Gaming History Source
Yeah you're right.
Still a good game though :-)
Indeed ! I had fun playing it. But , I have to make decisions on what to include & exclude. :( This is my burden. lol
Gaming History Source
Forgot GAPLUS!!!!!!!!! Midway,the best one.
Gaplus is Galaga 3. It is an ENTIRELY different game.
Gaplus is a SEQUEL TO GALAGA
SEQUELS DON'T COUNT WHEN YOU'RE COMPARING THE ORIGINAL GAME
SMH
Never mind he already did
What about, Let's Compare Super Mario Bros! :)
Nintendo will give a strike for that one. :(
But ! It's been done by someone else. :)
czcams.com/video/s2tVFzlnU5E/video.html
2:20damn,that has got to be the WORST looking commodore 64 game ever
It was from 1982, the year the C64 was released. It would've looked good for it's time.
Rhys Owens actually, i dont think it would have even looked good at the time
Absolutely not.
Bassling96
ok, name a commodore 64 game that looks worse then that
I mean, there's absolutely not worse looking game on C64 like this.
cute♡
The DOS Version is Called Galagon
Amber Hensley agreed! I knew that when I first seen it on CZcams!
the same people thats doing the Atari 2600 port. it was renamed to avoid legal issues
@@madmax2069 That Atari 2600 port is surprisingly epic. Easily one of the greatest games ever produced for the platform (if homebrews like this count).
@@MattMcIrvin it's epic, but there's a few of them that are just as amazing making you wonder how they did it. Just go look a Mappy on the 2600, the sounds and graphics make you go how the heck did they ever do that.
I wonder why Galaga was not *officially* ported to so many popular platforms back in the day? No C64, no Atari 8 bit? [edit: Atari produced an official version for their 7800 but not their own 8 bit computers? Weird.]
Galaga is a fun game. I usually just play the port of it for the NES.
I’m making a Galaga/Invaders in Windows forms using c#
Ah yes galaga
What a classic
There's kind of an amazing clone of Galaxian for the original B/W TRS-80, called Galaxy Invasion. On a machine that had pixel resolution of 128x48. czcams.com/video/NEDBq4B9R_k/video.html
Why on the earth people play japanese msx games (60hz) in european computers (50hz), this slow down 20% the game play and the music.
Next time, get a phone or tablet and use DraStic, it's much better than No$GBA or DeSmuMe. It's a lot more stable and has better performance, compatibility and overall less bugs.
EDIT: Also Namcomuseum GBA's timestamp is off by a minute, it should be 23:53. Other than these two things, these are some great comparisons.
The PSP version is the slowest LOOOOOOOOOOOOL XD
Emulation Issues. I actually had to speed up the footage to make it bearable.
I am stunned :O
John Galois Hey, I made Rock Is Sponge using the files on my channel. Secondly, I played this on my PSP many times over the years. It runs at 60fps. The problem in the video is the fact that he is using a PSP emulator in which are not the best.
What’s the let’s compare music called
This used to be my game back when I had my joy stck with Pac Man Ms. Pac Man Galaga Dig Dug Mappy and uuhh I forgot the name of the racing one I had on there
Why wasn't there a version for the Atari 2600, the 5200, or the Coleco vision or Intellivision?
Galaga was never on Atari 2600. There was a fake Palatte swapped River Raid Cart Renamed Galaga floating around out there. Atari 2600 had Galaxian instead.
ZombieRyushu Which was pretty good. I still play it every now and then.
The River Raid hack or Galaxian?
ZombieRyushu Galaxian. I never even heard of the River Raid hack of Galaga, though I did play River Raid a ton when I was a kid.
Its Pink Palette Swap of River Raid, it was a Physical scam cart, with a false label, poor fools would buy this thinking it was a 2600 Port of Galaga.
Atari 7800 win I like the sound I like Gameboy Just Atari 7800
That C64 version....Shouldn't the flying sound pitch down and not up? It sounds like they ripped the Galaxian credit sound and slowed it down. 😂😂😂
AJ Knight Same with the shooting sound
You forgot Galaga 88/90/91 and Galaga Arrangement.
Okay, but why are we shooting insects in space exactly?
Make a let's compare Galaxian!
Nella Kerrota
It's been done.
There is two Commodore 64 in galaga
you missed the one that you can play before tekken(first) launches on playstation(first or one) Did you not include that for a reason?
捕獲されるところもっとみたかった
I have Nancy museum on my DS and I only play galaga on it
ファイター捕獲とチャレンジングステージの有無くらいは録画してほしかった
Thank goodness I will get 30000
5:45 ZALAGA???
Unofficial fan made port. Same with the MS-DOS version, Galagon, which is the best one in my opinion.
Wasn't Zalaga an official release for the BBC Micro? Programmed by "Orlando" , who I believe did Arcadians for the BBC (Galaxian clone)..
Sean Ramey
It's not a fan made port, it's an OFFICIAL commercial clone. Huge difference
'64 and Atari 8bit could've been made better
(Edit: Just the homebrews, Zalaga is fine)
Why did you put the C=64 homebrew into the lineup? It looks like it was coded with the Commodore Basic interpreter - it's awful. The C=64 isn't a graphic power house but a VIC-20 could do better than what's shown.
There's no way in hell the C-64 example is accurate
It was early homebrew (not an official port), and was originally made for the Commodore PET which could only do monochrome
The Tekken version is harder.
plZeuksenanetx15
planetx15 Lol
Actually GBA normal version @ 23:53
