    Description Source:
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galaga
Galaga (ギャラガ Gyaraga?) is a fixed shooter arcade game developed and published by Namco in Japan and published by Midway in North America in 1981. It is the sequel to Galaxian, released in 1979. The gameplay of Galaga puts the player in control of a spacecraft which is situated at the bottom of the screen. At the beginning of each stage, the area is empty, but over time, enemy aliens arrive in formation, and when all of the enemies arrive on screen, they come down at the player's ship in formations of one or more, and may either shoot it or collide with it. During the entire stage, the player may fire upon the enemies, and when all enemies are vanquished, the player will proceed to the next stage.
Galaga is one of the most successful games from the golden age of arcade video games. The arcade version of it has been ported to many consoles, and it has had several sequels.
In 2011, the game celebrated its 30th anniversary with the release of Galaga 30th Collection for iOS.

There were certain sounds that were synonymous with arcades back in the day and those emanating from a Galaga cabinet were among the most recognisable.

So true! The (other) most evocative ones for me are Robotron, Defender and Star Wars. And I guess Pac Man and Space Invaders too, especially for earlier memories. Ah, and the music to Pole Position!

@@Hologhoul There are quite a few that are etched into the consciousness of those who were around to hear them back in the day. Robocop, Rastan, Space Harrier, Bubble Bobble, Moon Patrol, Track and Field, Punch Out, Out Run etc.

That C64 version went through a few revisions. I had a version with the same block graphics, but they added a few random colors to the ships/aliens. Then there was a version called Galaxy that was published by Kingsoft which had actual graphics, but all the aliens in each swarm were single-colored. Finally there was Fire-Galaxy by Kingsoft which had multiple alien colors.
As far as I can remember, they never changed the attack patterns, so they all played the same on every stage.

That actually wasn't the emulation of either the DS or the game itself, it was actually the resolution of the DS being too small to show the game 1:1 as the arcade cabinet would. However, there is an option to display the game sideways at a 1:1 resolution, with the DS being held sideways.

In the early 80s i loved to play video games and wants to find out what is possible with the current hardware. The Commodore PET/CBM 3008 with 8 Kbytes RAM and 40x25 chars offers all characters to use a 80x50 resolution but had no sound. WIth a simple Line-Out there was a chance to use the Compact-Cassette recorder noise over an external amplifier. I realy liked the game a lot because it is playable and even after 35 years there are still some players, crazy thoughts and ports by others (C64,Atari).
My version for the C64 is called Galaxy and it was released by Kingsoft.
    - For the PET/CBM version i got the order of the C64 version.
    - For the C64 Version i got the C64.
Together it shows me what to do in the future.

Galaga was hard for a lot of the early PC's to smoothly emulate. The Atarisoft C-64 version of Galaxian sucked, I think thats why they never made a version of Galaga for it. The NES cartridge was the first port I thought got it almost right. And I forgot about Champ DOS games, their shareware games were very popular with my PC user group in the 1990's. And I remember the C=64 homebrew. There were a couple of variations of it redone with a black background and color graphics. Update: Here's a better version of it czcams.com/video/J_fZ4MwRwzc/video.html

There's also an extremely rare, undumped version for the Hitachi MB-S1. Only a couple of photos exist, located here: galagamaniax.web.fc2.com/another/ano_isyoku/ano_isyoku.html From what I can tell, a pretty good port. You can also see images of the MZ versions there.

The GBA 50th anniversary is either not emulated well or ported very badly cause both the audio and the graphics seemed to have gotten a downgrade. The version shown from the PSP Battle Collection (I suppose that's supposed to be the newer version) looks like something hastily made with Game Maker or something. Even the Atari 8 bit version looks more pleasing to me.
On the other hand, the arranged version that was included in the Namco Museum games for 6th generation consoles sounds and looks really good and seems to hold well on its own. I also saw that the N64 and Dreamcast versions seemed to have a slightly slower version of Galaga compared to the Playstation version of Namco Museum.
All in all, an interesting comparison video. I feel ashamed that I've been playing games for decades but admittedly never played Galaga. I should fix that soon!

In all probability it's actually the PET or C16 version ported over. The Atari 8-bit version appears to be roughly the same game.
That said, for all the crudeness of graphics it appears to be a pretty playable version with the motion of waves well represented. About the only thing I could zing it for is the aspect ratio being off.

@@madmax2069 That Atari 2600 port is surprisingly epic. Easily one of the greatest games ever produced for the platform (if homebrews like this count).

I wonder why Galaga was not *officially* ported to so many popular platforms back in the day? No C64, no Atari 8 bit? [edit: Atari produced an official version for their 7800 but not their own 8 bit computers? Weird.]

Next time, get a phone or tablet and use DraStic, it's much better than No$GBA or DeSmuMe. It's a lot more stable and has better performance, compatibility and overall less bugs.
EDIT: Also Namcomuseum GBA's timestamp is off by a minute, it should be 23:53. Other than these two things, these are some great comparisons.

Why did you put the C=64 homebrew into the lineup? It looks like it was coded with the Commodore Basic interpreter - it's awful. The C=64 isn't a graphic power house but a VIC-20 could do better than what's shown.
