  • What’s happening in this Starship Troopers movie clip?
Sgt. Zim (Clancy Brown from Thor: Ragnarok and The Shawshank Redemption) asks the soldiers if one of them has the strength to fight him and win. Breckinridge (Eric Bruskotter from In The Line of Fire) replies that he thinks he can. The sergeant takes him down and breaks his wrist. Flores (Dina Meyer from Saw and Dragonheart) arrives with a letter. She notices Juan (Casper Van Dien from Sleepy Hollow and Dead Water). Flores wants to join this unit. The sergeant asks him if she has what it takes.

A lot of characters got condensed or even eliminated from the book, which is sad. Namely Ace, who is only with rico after basic. The best example of his character might be his friend from basic Jenkins (who was both with him through klendathu and on to the roughnecks.) There's also the Roughnecks' platoon sergeant Jelal, a short Turkish man who was quite a stickler.

Starship Troopers was written from the ground up as a satire of US culture and it's slow march into happy clappy fascism which can be compared to Robocop's corporate kleptocracy. Fascism usually comes in through the establishment of a corporate kleptocracy as corporatism is the central plank of fascist economic theory as laid down by Mussolini in his fascist manifesto.

She is also clearly trained in martial arts... so add that adds a bit more sting to the punch.
And she took being choked out with aplomb. It really sold the character. The fight was credible. I liked Dizzy even tho they genderbent the character.

    • @ralphzechendorf1644

she's the best character by far, she doesn't even believe in the federation bull-s**t, and the fight scene shows how smart and controlled she is. But she's madly in love with Rico and will follow him to the other side of the galaxy. Her death is the only event that leads Rico to actually question the Federation, but then Carl shows up to put him back in line.
If you watch well, Dizzy is the only character which expresses human emotions at the Buenos Aires destruction. She conveys it in just two words "it's home". Rico is just angry and wants to fight. We never get to see the reactions from Carmen or Carl, who also lost their parents there, and the rest of the world is only excited about a new war.

The director changed the same quite a bit from the book. In the book, Zim didn't break the arm intentionally. And he apologizes to the recruit afterwards for breaking the arm because the recruit rushed him before Zim was ready. And he felt it was his responsibility to always be ready.
This plays out later in the book when one of the characters acting as an officer is struck by a recruit.
Either them or Colonel to watch is very disappointed in the character because now they have to punish the recruit but they consider it the character's failure.

In most movies, Clancy Brown has that cold yet charismatic attitude which makes him a unique character.

There's some magic in this movie. Even back in 1997 we all realized it was a bit "stupid". But we loved it anyway.

Interesting to see how they treat their recruits with complete competence in their abilities not too be so full of themselves and give them opportunities to prove their worth against the instructors themselves also the drill sergeant seems to watch over them to examine their behavior in the chow hall.
    Interesting military training regiment

Zim and Hadley aren't the same. Zim does what he does to help the soldiers prepare for war, while Hadley is just a corrupt prison guard. They have verry little in common.

Far from it. They are entirely different characters, and I think it's a credit to Clancy Brown how he subtly puts across the differences.
Hadley is a bully. He likes inflicting pain and suffering to those who he has fully control over. I think you see a lot of his true self come out towards the end of the film, firstly after Andy has escaped and they are in the cell. You see the fear in him, the lack of control. The way he flinches when the warden is throwing rocks. He's dealing with someone who's smaller than him, weaker than him, but has so much power over him, and that terrifies him. Then also at the end when he's arrested. Again, he's afraid, he's powerless. The sort of men who he's spent his careers having almost unlimited power over are now fully controlling his life (since the police arresting him, the judges who will sentence him, the prison officers who will confine him are in most ways no different to the prisoners he's controlled).
Zim on the other hand is a "tough love" sort. He knows that he needs to turn these bunch that are below apes into a fighting force if they are to have any chance of surviving. He makes it clear he doesn't have full control over them. He tells them they can leave any time they want. You see a lot of his true self in two scenes. Firstly here, after he breaks the recruits arm. He asks "you ok son", and you can hear the care in his voice. He doesn't try and belittle him. The lesson is taught, to all of them. Then there is after the accident. For a start when they are discussing what happened, you can see how this is personal to him, yet he doesn't try and blame Rico, and backs him up. Then there is the whipping "bite down on his son, it helps, I know". Throughout the whole scene you can tell he's taking no pleasure in it. He doesn't want it to happen, he wishes it didn't need to happen, but it does. Another wonderful scene is when Rico decides not to drop out. Zim gives a little smile at this. Then when he rips up Ricos dropout form. "Is this your signature private?" "Doesn't look like it to me".
