Literally Chasing Classic Cars! The GREAT RACE from Kentucky to Maine

  • The Great Race is the most grueling two weeks of my year because it's non-stop from the moment I wake up to the moment I go to sleep. But when someone asks me at a gas station about all the stickers on my vehicle, or what I do for the Great Race, I simply tell them I get paid to chase classic cars up and down the back roads. And while it requires long hours and a long time away from my family, it's one of the most satisfying adventures of my career.
    I started photographing the Great Race in 2011, which is the first year of the event's operation under Coker Tire's ownership. I was already an employee of Coker Tire at that point, so it was natural that I go on the event and provide photography and articles about the epic time, speed, distance rally. The route changes every year, allowing me to see nearly every state in the lower 48 and it's given me the chance to photograph these cars in absolutely breath-taking locations. Crater Lake, Mount Washington, Pikes Peak, just to name a few. This year, the Great Race went from Owensboro, Kentucky to Gardiner, Maine. The scenery for this year's route wasn't mind blowing but the competition was tight and the towns were packed with spectators that loved welcoming the Great Race to their home.
    Typically, on the Great Race, I am so focused on photographing the event and providing social media coverage, website articles and magazine articles that I don't have time to provide any type of video coverage here on CZcams. This year, that changed. I enlisted the help of my wife, who handled a lot of the video clips that I pieced together each day as a highlight reel for Great Race's social media pages. I then strung those highlight reels together to make this video, and tried to tighten it up a little here and there.
    Still as more than 40 minutes long, it is only a glimpse of what we see during nine days and 2,300 miles across America's back roads and scenic highways. To find out more, you can go to www.greatrace.com, where you'll see thousands of my photographs, and lots of explanation about the scoring system, and what it takes to compete at this level.

    In 2019 I happened to be headed to the LeMay Museum in Tacoma, WA when I realized I was there when the Great Race cars arrived at the last stop. I had more fun, and it was awesome!

    Great coverage my friend. From the cars to the points of interest along the way. Really impressed with how well 50+ year old cars faired. Special note to the people in open cockpit cars and the people on Motorcycles. Special breed! Keep up the good work.

    Good stuff right here. This video must have taken a good 8 hours or more to edit. Nice work Mr. Byrd. Musical selections were great as well.

    This is probably a dumb question, but if this is a slow speed timed race. Why were some cars coming in hot in the turns?

    • @IEchuckie
      @IEchuckie Před 2 měsíci

      If you were behind time, broke down and had to make up time, etc you might have to go faster in certain areas

    • @HotRodHoarder
      @HotRodHoarder  Před 2 měsíci +1

      The instructions have turns and speed changes and all speed changes are assumed to occur instantly, so the teams have to do the math to figure out how much time it takes to accelerate or decelerate on the given changes. There could be 100-plus maneuvers per day.
      In the case of the fast corners, the instructions may state a 30 mph corner, so MOST racers will cut speed to slowly and consistently take the corner and then make up the lost time on the straight away...lots of math involved to stay on time. However, a select few racers will hold speed around corners...the yellow '33 Ford truck with the flags is famous for it. As a photographer, I'm always searching for good corners to capture these fast turns because it provides a lot more excitement.

    So, are you Required to have stickers and/or magnets all over your dam car? ....🤔

    • @HotRodHoarder
      @HotRodHoarder  Před 2 měsíci

      Yes, they are sponsor decals and they are required. They are specially designed for easy removal but a lot of the Great Racers leave them on year round.
