How Long Should Your Workouts Be? (45, 60, or 90 min)

  • How long should your workouts take to see the best results? Does working out for longer than 45 minutes diminish muscle growth and fat loss due to hormonal changes? Or is this a myth? Find out what the scientific evidence has to say about exercised induced changes to testosterone and cortisol, and if there really is an optimal workout length for building muscle and burning fat.

How long should you work out during each training session? Is there actually a time limit for your workouts that you don't want to exceed. After all, I'm sure you've heard some people say that that working out for longer than 45 minutes to an hour will have a negative effect on your hormones, and do more harm than good, ultimately limiting your progress. Meanwhile, others say that there's no need to worry so much about overtraining and the more time you put into your workouts the faster results you'll get. So which one is it? Well, that's exactly what I want to go over in today's video. And not only will I provide my personal suggestions, but I'll also go over exactly what the scientific research has to say on this topic. So let's start first with the very common belief that you should never exceed hour-long workouts and preferably even keep your workouts under 45 minutes. This idea is mostly based around what happens to hormones like testosterone, growth hormone, and cortisol during exercise. When you start working out your body will respond by naturally boosting testosterone levels and the theory is that this boost is supposed to help improve our performance, help us build muscle to a greater degree, and it's also supposed to help us burn more fat... So far so good, however, the idea is that after around 45 minutes your Cortisol levels will start rising while your testosterone levels start dropping putting your body into a catabolic mode where you're more likely to breakdown muscle tissue for energy, and store more body fat. So exercising past the 45-minute mark was always thought to be at best a waste of time and at worst something that could undo all your hard work at the gym. Now, is there any truth to this? Well, there have been a couple studies that looked at this topic directly and one of the first ones was a small study back in 2001 that involved a small sample size of only 16 men. The researchers divided these men into two groups. One group only trained one arm for 9 weeks. While the other group trained their arm the same way, but also included 8 sets of Legs at the end of their arm workouts, to stimulate more testosterone and growth hormone to be released. Sure enough, after each workout, blood tests showed that the group that also trained their legs experienced higher spikes in testosterone and growth hormone levels. And At the end of the 9 weeks, the group that worked both their Arm and legs increased their strength in their trained arm by a whopping 37 percent while the group that only worked their arm without training their legs increased their arm strength by only 9 percent. So this study clearly showed that you should ideally limit your workout length to that first 45 minutes while testosterone and growth hormone is elevated since in this study it led to more gains......... or did it. Well, it actually turns out the study was flawed. The participants in the leg's and arms group started off 20 to 25 percent weaker than the participants in the arm only group, giving them the opportunity to take greater advantage of newbie gains leading to a greater change in their strength levels throughout the study. (1) So it was ultimately inconclusive

Also. What about shit like GTG training? I know everything Pavel Tsatsouline broke the mold and while most of us don’t necessarily have time to train that way, it’d be cool to know why the 80’s Russian Olympic team records still haven’t been beaten (apart from the state sponsored steroid program...power lifting teams still use roids). fung whyou 100% agree. Mainly curious as to how GTG works, more so WHY. Same w all Pavel’s methods.
I’m fully aware we have better equipment, nutrition, science, and studies at our disposal. My question overall is more involved. How healthy were these participants to begin with? What were their diets like? Was that even a consideration? Bc we all know that nutrition is about 80% of training to begin with. Are there ANY controlled studies available taking men like us (I’m assuming you’ve been training at least a year and have been following a regimented nutrition plan - I just count my macronutrients and consume healthy fats, proteins, and carbohydrates). I only supplement w a multi, b complex, and use whey and creatine. Caffeine pre workout.
Why don’t they study ppl like us? I’d be down.
I’m about to start NASM’s nutrition program and their certified personal training program. Anyways. Hope you’re well brother! Thanks for the reply!

What can you do in 45 min? Three sets each of three exercises, at best? I lift heavy weights and I need 2 or 3 minutes between sets. If you can squat 110 kg after a minute again, or deadlift 150 kg after, again, after only one minute, congratulations. But, at 36, I can't. I rather lift heavy weights than lift lightly and race against the clock.

Most important aspect of proper training is Check your ego at the door when you walk in. Lifting so heavy that you can barely do any workouts in a full 45 minutes session while you're at the gym isn't efficient. Go just a little lighter, keep your form clean and you should be able to do significantly more reps in that amount of time. There are very hard cut-offs when it comes to weight, just a few kilos too heavy and suddenly you're at 1/3 the total reps and 3 times the amount of rest you may need. I train hard and heavy 2 hours a day 4 times a week. 3 clean sets at a heavy weight to where I'll probably fail on the last one. Then a solid 3-4 reps of a heavier weight, then I drop down to my old standard and go till failure. Allows me to continually progress the weight I work with, get used to heavier weight and use my old normal weight as a good motivator in my last set for progress. Went from benching 100kg as my standard to 125 now in a couple months. Yet even though I do 5 sets for bench, It takes me at most 12-15 minutes even when I have my friend with me and we alternate. I'm not saying don't take breaks, but lifting so heavy that you break longer than you train, at least for me, leads to really slow progress with the exercises I have time for and almost no progress for the exercises I don't typically like, but know I need to include.

@@dt7197 Perhaps check *your ego* and don't be so condescending? Most studies show a 3-minute recovery is optimal and heavy-weights with proper form are the best for hypertrophy. Seriously, what can you do in 45 min? Sometimes just setting up an exercise at my gym takes five minutes. You can't do any abs work or calves, or anything else if you are limited to 45 minutes. That only works for full-on bro splits.

My goal was to shed weight, and build strength. I have a staff fitness room at work. I use it for during my unpaid lunch break. 30+ minutes (occasionally sneaking in an extra 10) a day every day I work. Since July I've dropped nearly 40lbs, and notice improvements in my body. @@DragracerSA Hi Krauss, that is awesome! I wish you all the very best with going to the gym. You will be healthier, stronger, and feel better about yourself.
My advice would be to follow a full body program, 3 days a week (Mon, Weds, Fri).
As a beginner, a full body routine will hit each muscle group 3 times a week, which is optimal for building muscle.
Just Google full body programs or look on CZcams, and find one you like.
Make sure the workout includes exercises like squats, deadlifts, bench press, barbell rows and overhead press.
These exercises are compound exercises, which work a lot of the muscles in your body.
Make sure that someone teaches you properly how to do the exercises or look on CZcams for any tutorials.
The massive iron channel on CZcams has some good workouts and tips.
With your nutrition, just try to eat plenty of protein (1 gram per pound of body weight).
Complex carbohydrates like potatoes, sweet potatoes, rice etc.
Healthy fats like olive oil, eggs, sardines, etc.

I’ve been doing a full body routine 3x per week and it takes me two hours to complete. I’m going to change to 6x per week and hopefully go for 50-60 minutes each session. I think I’ll get more volume for each muscle group doing this.

That only happened to me when I first started lifting. Baby steps if you're a beginner. Go easy on yourself cause your body needs time to adapt and cope with the stress. Don't eat big meals (or at least have a 2-hour interval) before working out. Keep yourself hydrated all the time when working out but don't drink too much to the point you feel like puking.
If these can't help, go see a doctor.

  • @Arcaryon
    @Arcaryon Pƙed 4 lety

The question is really not about exercise alone but mostly about your life. I walk 3 minutes to my local gym, which means that if I workout for roughly 90 minutes per day from 6-7:30 am - I effectively spend 2 hours to workout. That's definetly something to take into consideration but what's probably even more important if the type of workout one chooses. Some people may work out 3 days/week, some 6/week - it absolutely depends on the type of training you so. If I do a lot of full body and little isolation, I can workout for less time but actually hit a lot of the same muscles I would in a more complicated push pull legs split. If you struggle with time, consider what your options are and what exercises are effective and fun for you to do.
