  • The German healthcare system explained! In this educational video on UroChannel, Dr. med. Dr. phil. Stefan Buntrock, a board-certified urologist and sexologist from Göttingen, delves into the complexities of the German healthcare system, emphasizing the dichotomy between public and private healthcare. The presentation explores the cultural attitudes surrounding success and envy in Germany, particularly how these perceptions influence opinions on healthcare privileges. Dr. Buntrock addresses the often misunderstood aspects of the dual healthcare system, elucidating the exclusive conditions under which individuals can opt for private health insurance-mainly available to self-employed persons, civil servants, or those earning above a specific income threshold.
The video details the financial advantages of private health insurance, especially for the younger demographic, highlighting the lower costs due to fewer health risks. However, Dr. Buntrock also outlines the growing disparities in costs as one ages, with premiums significantly increasing upon retirement. He touches on the operational differences between the two systems, such as the ability for private patients to bypass long waiting lists and receive more frequent consultations, and the compensation structure for doctors treating private versus public patients.
Dr. Dr. Buntrock concludes by discussing the broader implications of private healthcare, including its role in subsidizing public healthcare and fostering medical innovation. Despite its benefits, he also notes the substantial challenges private insurance holders may face, such as escalating costs and issues with claim reimbursements. The video serves as a critical resource for expatriates and residents navigating the German healthcare landscape, offering insights into both its advantages and potential pitfalls.

Private insurance is the same everywhere, expensive and with limitations, only for those who can afford the payment and the the amounts not covered by the insurance, and sometimes they can decide not to pay at all. Those people who live in countries with good public healthcare systems are lucky, only a few places in the world. In poor countries, people can’t pay for private and the public healthcare is almost non existent, when they get sick, they suffer so much..physically and emotionally. There is nothing worse than feeling ill and not to have any option
