    This is a really great idea for space saving. It could be used for so many applications too. In the kitchen for cookbooks, mail etc, or as a vanity in a bedroom, or if someone doesn't have a dedicated study/office, this gives them the space for working, and folds away when they're done.
    Plus, the cost savings over buying prefabricated, and it will likely last decades longer.
    Although, I don't have a table saw yet, so this is a project for the future.

    Enjoyed the video. I'm looking for ideas for putting a desk/table (Murphy style, maybe) on the back side of my kitchen counter that faces the living room. Small space living is new to me so need something that fold out of the way when not in use. I've seen a couple, including yours, that include shelf space which will come in handy for my smaller space. I will check out some of your other videos as well.

    Love this! Purchased your plan and am currently building it for my grandson. I did make one modification that may be helpful for others: I extended the back panel downward about 9.5" below the cabinet and mounted the arms to it, so the entire desk will be self-contained as a single unit (without needing to mount each arm individually to the wall). Oh, and I also used dovetail joints on the cabinet to make it pretty. 😊 Otherwise, awesome project and video - many thanks!

    I've been mulling over a similar project, and yours gives me some good design ideas. I'm going for a fold-down workbench top in the garage, mounted on the wall to a short fixed shelf (like the bottom of your shelving unit there attached to the other half of the piano hinge), and the bench to fold down flat to the wall when not in use. I have the 8" concrete stub wall around the garage perimeter, on which I can rest angled folding legs when the top is displayed, but yours gives me some ideas for those as well, and also the fixed shelving above it as part of the unit is an approach I had not considered. Thanks!

    • @Handyverse
      @Handyverse  Před 6 lety +1

      Thanks, it is a great saw. I honestly lucked into it; it was being discarded by a company I used to work for because it wasn't being maintained properly and was a safety concern. I got it for nothing outside of having to spend a bit on a few parts to make it safe to operate. I'm not sure how much it would cost to buy one used but I imagine it would still be a few hundred dollars. Good luck! I hope you find something. - Jason

      Thanks! Yes, we'd say it's possible with limited tools, especially if you can get some pieces pre-cut at the hardware store. We have the plans for free on our website; that will help. It is a fairly straightforward build. Good luck! Let us know how it turns out.

  • @leahnewyork
    @leahnewyork Před 5 lety +2

    Awesome. Found this while seeking something else, which I still haven't found: a wall-mounted shelf/box for a music keyboard so that the keyboard folds out and down, affixed to sturdy folding/extensible arms. Might you ever design such a thing? That would be great! Has anybody seen such a thing? Thanks for any/all tips, and thanks for this great vid of yours!

    • @Handyverse
      @Handyverse  Před 5 lety +1

      Thanks for the kind words! The keyboard housing is a great idea. You could probably modify these plans to make it work. Leave out the shelves in the middle, make the overall size larger if necessary, and affix your keyboard to the desk portion. Let us know if you try it out!

    • @leahnewyork
      @leahnewyork Před 5 lety

      @@Handyverse OMG thank you so much for responding! Maybe I *could* do it as you describe. Must think on it. My orig thought was something more flexible both for ergonomic purposes, and also in order to activate use of wall above existing desk ... so that I can essentially play the music keyboard without having to clear the regular desk completely. In that scenario I do need to find sturdy folding/retractable/extensible hardware to attach to the wall inside the kind of box you have designed... and g-d knows whether/where that might be available. But anyway, thanks much for responding!!! Will certainly circle back if/as I get this kind of thing built. Best wishes to you and yours including the kitty!

    • @Handyverse
      @Handyverse  Před 4 lety

      Thanks! I used three studs (six screws) to attach the main section. I would recommend that many as a minimum. Thats really nifty. Do you think it could be able to support the weight of a normal sewing machine? Or the usage of a sewing machine?

    • @Handyverse
      @Handyverse  Před 6 lety

      Thanks! It should support the weight of a sewing machine but if you're concerned, you could always make the "wings" that rotate out from a wider board. The greater the height of the wings, the more weight the desktop would support. Thinking about outfeed from your sewing machine though, you may want to consider one that folds down from the short side. If you search for tiny house tables, that might give you a better idea of what I mean. Thanks for watching!

  • @heshamhafez8954
    @heshamhafez8954 Před 5 lety +1

    Thanks a lot for the idea. I tried to do one but bigger, but I'm facing a problem that the studs are not touching the desktop and all the weight is only supported by the piano hinges, do you have a fix for that ?

    • @Handyverse
      @Handyverse  Před 5 lety

      Hmmm, you definitely don't want all the weight being taken by the piano hinge; the first time someone leans on it, it'll break on you. Maybe add some kind of spacer to the bottom of the desk surface that would make contact with the arms when the tabletop is down? You could even make it look decorative if you wanted. Good luck. Let us know how you fix it.

    Installed these on a riding mower czcams.com/users/postUgkxetgfkJxfdT_B2vGYP-uNTLaBbim9OKTD . They were sharp out of the box, although I've never liked blade edges that were coated...not quite as sharp as I personally want. Using my belt sander, I removed the coating from the cutting edges and refined the edge enough to shave with them. So far, after three runs, these blades are holding up as expected. Even after hitting a few fallen 1/2 inch or so branches, the edges are still sharp as heck. No edge dings, no warping, etc. As far as installing them, the cutouts were of the proper size and shape to fit my aging Craftsman mower. Very satisfied.

      He is telling you how awesome the desk is. and he is asking how did you mount the desk.

      @Handyverse  Před 5 lety +1

      Ah, thanks. We are sometimes limited to the powers of Google Translate which, while great, doesn't always get the message quite right. We mounted the desk by screwing it directly into the wall studs. قمنا بتثبيت المكتب عن طريق شدها مباشرة في قوائم الحائط.

    Great project. Though I think my best part was that slick edit at the beginning of the desk going from open to closed. You have to tell me, did you just hold really still whilst opening it and made a super slick cut, or did you use some form of masking in your editing software? I played with masking in my last video and had a lot of fun with it. (Link here if you're interested czcams.com/video/cNCm1lkvOiM/video.html
