  • In the annual press freedom ranking compiled by Reporters Without Borders, Belarus has for years occupied one of the last 30 places of the 180 countries listed. Following massive protests against ruler Alexander Lukashenko, hundreds of media professionals were arrested in Belarus in 2020 and 40 were sentenced to several years in prison. Many journalists have left the country. One of them is Maria Savushkina, who has been threatened several times by the Belarusian secret service (KGB) and now runs the successful satirical media project ChinChin from Berlin.

Sad that free speech is dying in Germany too. You can criticize the Eastern Block, but not Israel.

You can criticize anything in a democracy, including Germany. There are courts and ombudsmen and NGOs and organizations that defend the interests of employees, tenants, patients, inmates, students, immigrants, children, LGBT citizens, elderly citizens, disabled citizens, etc.
So you are sadly misinformed about life in democracies. I guess you have never lived in one.

the idea that Germany has no problems with free speech or independent media is deep hubris. Not being able to say somethign against israel is probably not an issue, though (unless you want a career as a civil servant or politician).

Belarus is not the last European dictatorship. It's' the last Russian satellite. Putin holds that title.

If we are to accept rating of the "worst dictatorships" judged by western media perhaps we should accept rating of "so called democracies" by "so called dictatorships"
