What a great video from a guy who obviously knows his stuff and gets straight to the point. Some other you tubers would have made this last 15 mins. Thanks!
What a great way to complete the work!
No ifs no buts straight to the point.
Many thanks.
I know it's not something that a diy person would have, but the quickest/ safest/ non damaging way is to use a wall trimmer, as a professional.. and I've never lost to even the most veteran installer who doubted it.. but the most useful tip for diy, imo is to double up the tackstrip on the 2 walls you're stretching the rug to, which will make the carpet stay held to the tacks while you're cutting & after you already stretched.. not needed for apartment grade material, but anything thicker is a good idea.. and try to use a power stretcher if at all possible vs the kicker, there's no comparison of the install between the two.
Thanks so much for all your videos... just finished carpeting my bedroom and it looks pretty damn good, even if I do say so myself! I found the back cut easier in the end as I could steady my hand against the skirting. Keep up the good work!
Don’t forget to subscribe 👌
Exactly what I was looking for! Cheers!
Great and quick explanation with demo!
Everything I wanted to know! Thank you! :)
Thank you!! I've been looking for good instructions for so long, my carpets been lying around for several months 😂 now I can get to work!! Thank you so much for sharing, I feel confident 💪😁
thank you for a brilliant demo...we will remember it in our carpeting endeavours tomorrow!
Just what I wanted to see. I replaced a carpet in a room once and miraculously it came out perfect using an entirely different and "lucky cutting" method. Did a second room and I completely messed it up. Looking forward for the 3rd times a charm correct way 😂
I have watched a few of these videos.
This makes the most sense.
Good job
I have never seen the tool your using to press the carpet to tackless and crease at baseboard… I need that I been doing carpet my whole life and learned from my father who owned business 40+….. never seen that 👌🏼…. Great videos
Thanks for this, was quick and explained all great!
Thanks so much for the helpful information!
This man is a true master of his trade.
I'm just going to trim where I've fitted a wardrobe. Didn't occur to me that you would stretch it onto the gripper & score it to a hard right angle before cutting. So I'm going to give this a go with the side cutting. (Might put a steel ruller behind to protect the wardrobe).
This was the first carpet video I found & it looks like it has quickly helped me.
Thanks
Top Man. Thanks for sharing your experience.
Perfection - thanks for these
Thats great, many thanks
Hook blade all day since i started fitting👌🏼
This video has helped me so much. Thank you.
A great demo. Cheers!
Alco Fibras thank you
Thanks bruv nice video yaar 👍👌
A man that truly works for a living. Expert Professional. Professional does not mean yo are good at what you do just means you do it for a living. This guy is a true expert in his profession. Absolutely awesome tips. Thanks
People will think I’ve paid you to say this. Very kind of you you
@@TrimTuckCarpets only stating fax as i see them. Do you want me to give back the money..
OMG, it looks so easy also thanks for explaining, bro!
Nice, brief and very useful. Thank you
Glad you have benefitted Cem
Cheers bud side cut took me while but worked sweet thanks.
Such skills....
cheers dude, gave me what i need
many thanks , very helpfull
Thank you for that, man!
Any chance you could put another video of the side cutting up? I usually use back or hook but quite like the look of the side cutting
Thanks for the info, going to try side cutting right now 👍🏻
Do us a video so we can see 😀
Amazing thank you
Used small yellow janser hooks for carpet and vinyl my whole apprenticeship and still do now front cutting and backhand cuts just what your taught I suppose
Goodly one - THANKS
Nice skills,mate 😏
Should you leave the skirting with a gap 6/9mm underneath before a carpet is fitted - especially a thick carpet, or will this leave a gap?
Brilliant video mate! Where did you learn? Any tips
More video please...👍
good video thanks for sharing
Harminder Singh glad you enjoyed it mate
Got a pretty square room, would be my first attempt at fitting a carpet.. you av just made it look even easier.. 👍🏽
Thank You
Legend
Thank you for the helpful video😂
You’re very welcome
My guy I saw you van today in London near Vauxhall’s bridge 🥳 Vauxhall van
Sweet Vuvuzela nice !! It was josh I believe as I was in the silver van 🤣
Thanks mate I like the second one because it is good for beginners like myself
When you’re using the stretcher, what’s that tool you’re using in your other hand? Looks to be beneficial. If you have a link, I’d appreciate it.
I had the same question! I think it's a speed Catt as this is also mentioned as one of his tools here czcams.com/video/O02VXD_E-pk/video.html
Speed Catt is expensive though so there's also
Roberts Rolling Carpet Tucker floormart.co.uk/roberts-rolling-carpet-tucker/
Speed Catt floormart.co.uk/speed-catt-tucking-tool/
Great video, what have you got wrapped around your Speedcatt?
Gym tape to make it softer to handle - he mentions this elsewhere in the comments 👍
Great video explaining what is the issue with hook blades bud ? Used your stair video as a guide to sort some stairs awesome result.
There isn’t an issue. The issue is if you haven’t mastered how to use it properly. You can cause damage to the skirting boards.
Also if you cut yourself with a hookie it’s really bad!
@@TrimTuckCarpets ahh I see it is personal preference but the way you showing in the video works really well.
@@sweetvuvuzela4634 yeah I’ve had my practice on it lol. I do use a hook a lot as I’ve got the hang of it now. After trial and error.
@@TrimTuckCarpets have you seen the Crain cutters a handle and two blades? It is popular in states? Also do you use power stretchers? www.contractflooringjournal.co.uk/archive/training/add-some-power-to-your-toolbox/
Thanks
Sal, do you use the roberts ez tuck? Is it basically the same idea as a speed Catt? that Catt handle design got my wrist warped.
I do use the ez tuck until it got stolen 😢 I did like that tool was good for certain areas.
How far should the "gripping" or tack strip be from the skirtboard/baseboard? Do you use carpet padding between the tack strip and skirting?
The distance is about a half inch I just use the tip of my figure to give me the distance. And the padding goes on the opposite side with the same distance. Good luck 👍
How much of a gap can be ok for Skirting boards ie i have a room that has beading to hide a 10mm or 12mm gap but previous people just stapled carpets without under lay or grip rods..
Not sure how common this is?
Yeeeeehawwwww 🤠
cool
Where did you get the handle for the speedcatt
It does not matter what you recommend or what you prefer when all of the results come out the same in the end. Everyone is going to do it the way they are most comfortable with. The first option you shown (Side cutting) can be very problematic for those who have not done it that way before or for newer installers due to it being very easy to have the blade slip and score against the trim while cutting. However, it's good that you shown numerous ways this can be done.
I noticed you said that it was a rental so not the best gripper - what is the best type of gripper in your opinion? Thanks 🙏
Rentals they just pay for is fitters to lob it down! So the grippers have usually been down donkeys years
I’ve seen a lot of fitters using the concave blades instead, I guess it’s just a different variation of the hook?
So you don't mark the skirting when you're cutting it freehand from the front of the carpet.
Concave more chance of marking
Changed days sal lol
Iain Bell what do you mean lol🤷♂️
Dont use a hook on anything apart from vinyl 🙈 straight blade at the right angle similar to how he used the hook , if your experienced you wont cut the skirt I could cut that in , in a few seconds
20 years using a straight and no problems. In Ireland we use a straight held the same as the hook in this video, cut it a few mil short and stretch onto the gripper. And it's just as easy with a hook. WTF is this video all about! 🙄
@@davidnugent9601 it clearly works in the video. I've worked with Irish "tradesmen" before thanks anyway 🤷♂️🗣🗣🍺🍻🗣🍺🤪🍺🥱🍺🍺🍺🥱🥱

Carpet trimmer?
Can you post a link to the tool that you’re using to mash it on the tack strip
FloorsbySouthernboys I’ve got a csrpet trimmer but never really enjoyed it. Might bring it out with very long hallways or rooms but generally I like my knife 😂. The tool is called a speed Catt you can find it on eBay or amazon.
Trim& TuckCarpets Thank you appreciate the info
Can't see it being any easier or as effective as rubbing on with the side of a trusty bolster. But as I've never seen or used one of these new gizmos, I could be wrong.
I'm put on some thick heavy gloves when I get ready to pull my carpet up
Awesome, could you come and show me in person, I've 6 rooms to do i think ill get the hang of it after watching you do all those first.
😂
Totally agree side cutting best way great demo bud
What’s the tool you use when you slide across the carpet to put it on the gripper before you cut it?
Speed cat
@@TrimTuckCarpets Cheers mate do you not use this to cut the carpet straight either?
What the name of tool, which you used to roll the edge inside before trimming?
I was wondering the same. Does anyone know? 🙏
im looking for a job in carpet fitting to get more experience but so far no luck
Are the snickers work trousers really worth the high price ?
Arran Brown they are quality but one hit with a blade, well... down goes 100£ 😟
Trim& TuckCarpets also I’m new to the flooring trade so what does NICF stand for ?
National institute of carpet and flooring
Where did you get the cover for your speed catt?
Luke Hatfield what do you mean cover ? The blue stuff is just some gym tape that’s just a bit soft so it’s more comfortable to handle.
Trim& TuckCarpets ahhh gym tape good idea. Looked like a blue rubber cover. Top man many thanks
can you list the tools you used with its names please,
Wall trimmer is the best. You should give it a go and see if you like it. Takes a few jobs to dial it in but saves time and cuts a great edge for tucking.
Yes I agree I have one. Just find the knife convenient, also to hand in my pocket.
@@TrimTuckCarpets Yeah I got ya...I have a few co workers that use knife as well. Probably has a lot to do with how you are trained.
Kushty thankyou
How long it take to do a basic room . Small room? Removing old n replacing new. About how long?
6months if you’re learning at least 3-4 days a week
@@TrimTuckCarpets what if you're just taking out old carpet then putting in new n the people already are experience? Seems more like a day or more?
@@Charles-tv6oi how long does it take to fit a room already prepped, is that what you’re asking?
If so,30 /45 min
@@TrimTuckCarpets well, if you just pull basic carpet up & leave the padding & put new on as you cut n fit it
Brother. What kind of shoes are those? I need to know. Toes would never wear out.
Hi-Tec Squash shoes
whats that tool you used to push on to gripper
It’s called a Speedcatt
@@TrimTuckCarpets brilliant thanks for quick response. just laid a few carpets for myself and your vids have been a godsend.
Hey man I'm an aussie carpet layer, can I come over for a couple months with you on a work visa?
Hi, you’re a bit far out to come work for a few months.
Where do you get your tools from? I was taught by an old school fitter and Havnt see these roller tuckers before?
Many flooring sites would have them.
Oh like a trimming the thing
From where can I get this carpet? Or what's the name of the carpet? Can I get this in India?
thanks _)
Which way do nicf recommend?
One this that has to be taken in to consideration is the fact that it’s real life fitting. If you can use a hook blade to a very good standard and don’t mark the skirting boards then feel free. If not then stick to the safe option.
Me personally I use a hook blade as I can control it, however I don’t always use it as I switch it up according to the circumstances.
Rule of thumb is. Make sure the carpet is fitted to a high standard and the customers walls / skirting boards are left the way you started.
You could use a stair tool aka boulster to tuck in. A lot easier
I do. I use both.
Wall trimmer?
Good tool, but this is more of a manual way….
Why does nobody use Wall trimmers over there?
Side cutting is slow and runs more risk of catching the skirts than any other way in my opinion.
back cutting is a no no as you are seriously close to cutting you finger tips off!!
Hook blades are the best out of the 3 as it's the safest and most efficient way of cutting in carpet.
I mean look back at this video and it's ridiculous when it comes to him uses the hook blade how fast he cuts the carpet With no damage to the skirting!!
Totally agree!! Hook blade all day long, faster easy.
31 years going strong
What about a carpet trimmer
Out of all those 3 methods shown, the hook blade was the quickest and didn't leave any marks on the skirting boards
So why not use that method all the time ?
To be honest. A lot of people frown upon fit as it can mark the skirting boards. And if you do cut yourself. It’s a really bad cut!
How ever saying that. I believe I have good
Control with the hook blade so yes I do use it often.
All depends how good you can use it. I have a few guys who work with me who don’t use it as they mark the boards.
@@TrimTuckCarpets thanks
Masha Allah
Much more experience
You missed one I use a straight blade and cut like the hook blade
Do is a video Shane. Show us how to do it with a straight blade.
@@TrimTuckCarpets Hi its wayne not Shane and ok I will sort one soon as got LVT for next 3 days
Yeah, wall trimmer
What’s wrong with the old wall trimmer ?.
Nothing. Just don’t use them.
I recommend back cutting because you can easily cut it short side cutting and your trimming rows
I’m always being monitored by 33 pacific avenue new zealand
Anyone else cut the just the carpet then stretch it then tuck in with bolster? Saves so much time instead of stretching the carpet then going round the room again to trim the excess?
Me I'm 60 yrs old & have been fitting carpets on& off since I was 18 yrs old & I've still got my original knee kicker & Stanley knifes etc
I know a few fitters in Barnsley that fit like that.... the problem with cutting it first and the stretching it on is you don't get enough tension and then end up going back to do a re-stretch..
I tried the 1st way and ended up with a hole in the 'MIDDLE' of the carpet! I then tried the 2nd way and cut my thumb off! So, I then tested the 3rd way on another piece of 'carpet'... And had to take my wife to the emergency room! (The Gynaecologist couldn't believe his eyes!)
😅
Why is a hook blade so frowned upon??
the same reason side cuttings frowned upon
You forgot one dah,, wall trimmer
Use all 3 ways ,all depends on the carpet and what your cutting against, loop pile and feltback need a little more care
