I know it's not something that a diy person would have, but the quickest/ safest/ non damaging way is to use a wall trimmer, as a professional.. and I've never lost to even the most veteran installer who doubted it.. but the most useful tip for diy, imo is to double up the tackstrip on the 2 walls you're stretching the rug to, which will make the carpet stay held to the tacks while you're cutting & after you already stretched.. not needed for apartment grade material, but anything thicker is a good idea.. and try to use a power stretcher if at all possible vs the kicker, there's no comparison of the install between the two.

I'm just going to trim where I've fitted a wardrobe. Didn't occur to me that you would stretch it onto the gripper & score it to a hard right angle before cutting. So I'm going to give this a go with the side cutting. (Might put a steel ruller behind to protect the wardrobe).
This was the first carpet video I found & it looks like it has quickly helped me.

It does not matter what you recommend or what you prefer when all of the results come out the same in the end. Everyone is going to do it the way they are most comfortable with. The first option you shown (Side cutting) can be very problematic for those who have not done it that way before or for newer installers due to it being very easy to have the blade slip and score against the trim while cutting. However, it's good that you shown numerous ways this can be done.

One this that has to be taken in to consideration is the fact that it’s real life fitting. If you can use a hook blade to a very good standard and don’t mark the skirting boards then feel free. If not then stick to the safe option.
Me personally I use a hook blade as I can control it, however I don’t always use it as I switch it up according to the circumstances.
Rule of thumb is. Make sure the carpet is fitted to a high standard and the customers walls / skirting boards are left the way you started.

Side cutting is slow and runs more risk of catching the skirts than any other way in my opinion.
back cutting is a no no as you are seriously close to cutting you finger tips off!!
Hook blades are the best out of the 3 as it's the safest and most efficient way of cutting in carpet.
I mean look back at this video and it's ridiculous when it comes to him uses the hook blade how fast he cuts the carpet With no damage to the skirting!!

How ever saying that. I believe I have good
Control with the hook blade so yes I do use it often.
All depends how good you can use it. I have a few guys who work with me who don’t use it as they mark the boards.

I recommend back cutting because you can easily cut it short side cutting and your trimming rows

Anyone else cut the just the carpet then stretch it then tuck in with bolster? Saves so much time instead of stretching the carpet then going round the room again to trim the excess?

Me I'm 60 yrs old & have been fitting carpets on& off since I was 18 yrs old & I've still got my original knee kicker & Stanley knifes etc

I know a few fitters in Barnsley that fit like that.... the problem with cutting it first and the stretching it on is you don't get enough tension and then end up going back to do a re-stretch..

I tried the 1st way and ended up with a hole in the 'MIDDLE' of the carpet! I then tried the 2nd way and cut my thumb off! So, I then tested the 3rd way on another piece of 'carpet'... And had to take my wife to the emergency room! (The Gynaecologist couldn't believe his eyes!)

Use all 3 ways ,all depends on the carpet and what your cutting against, loop pile and feltback need a little more care
