Employer: “why do you want to work for this company?”
Employee: “money”
I've always been very passionate about not starving to death
Pie Flavor best answer ever 😁
that question always seems stupid to ask to me
I'm seriously considering Pie Flavor's answer: there's a lot of stupid questions that are best answered with humor.
Employee does it to serve the company and the company does it to serve the costumer. Nobody does it for the money:)
Honestly this channel is becoming my favorite to receive a new notification video for. Insightful.
Why does he pay lambda i didn't get that part ?
@@curiousgeorge6921 lambda is free until you land a job. Then you have to give them a percentage of your income to pay for your education.
Facts mn. He is calling it as is.
Once applied for a job and got to the face 2 face interview. Dude turns up 35 mins late saying 'lets get the show on the road, got a train to catch'...I walked out there and then. Know your worth people
I go one step further, I don't turn up in the first place...😊
🤣🤣🤣🤣
how disrespectful of them, just cause they interview you doesn't justify them being late and treating you like shit. Baffling
i have so many stories of bad hiring managers. i even had employers during covid who still wanted me to come in to the office to interview. and you can tell if you stand a chance from how enthusiastic the interviewer is. if they ask you random hr stuff and are late, and bored, just walk out or hurry. luckily online interview are nice because i don't waste as much time.
Welcome to the era of Millenials in management... ego maniacs with low self esteem that think they are doing God's work by coding creating toxic work environments where the product is secondary to their own ego... it's not about finding solutions to problems, it's about showing off and using the latest, coolest "stack".
Hiring people is about finding someone who can prop up and support the lead devs massive ego, your years of experience can be invalidated with lack of knowledge in one specific area. For example, you might have 15 years of experience as a web developer but if you dont have experience with Angular, you are useleess.
Did my first code test yesterday after a year of self-teaching. They gave instructions to build an application and what you can use (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and any Framework). I don’t know any frameworkes so I did the whole thing in HTML/CSS and JavaScript. It was very difficult but Patrick is 100% right. You have to keep pushing through even if you’re discouraged.
Did you make it?
you should definitely learn a couple frameworks, makes life 10000 times easier!
Space Meter yessir I was able to finish the whole thing and do everything they asked me for in the test :). The test even said that doing the latter half without a framework would be very difficult (which it was) but I persevered and was able to make the app do everything they wanted. Even if I don’t get the job I am at least happy I can put it on my resume as something I did (gotta remove the companies info/API stuff first lol)
Abir Abbas I definitely will bro. I’m almost done my JavaScript course and after that I will be jumping on React :)
@@maserati4000 Nice. Good luck.
This channel is pure GOLD.
Oh thanks
💯 for real.
@@JoshuaFluke1 No. Thank you.
Hey Josh, can we get more videos like this, with you interviewing people? They are really great and very helpful. It "pulls back the curtain" so wonderfully.
Hi 👋🏾 Joshua! That’s a ton of interviews! Wow! I remember when I was laid off in 2015, I applied for about 50 jobs, and it took me approximately 3+ months to get back in the job market. Congratulations to you bro! We need a series on lessons learned. There’s a lot of great “smaller” companies not just The Googles of this world. Keep up this great content!
Yo, Josh, I just wanted to thank you for making these videos. As a Computer Science student, it was extremely hard for me to ever feel like I truly had all the qualifications for a job in the industry but your advice has been enormously useful and I landed a job interview this monday! Regardless of whether I get the job or not (fingers crossed though), I really owe it to you and this channel!
Congratulations! I'm glad it helped someone out there
Congratulations, hope you will get job very soon. How long were you trying to find a job before started watching Joshua's channel?
Did you get it?
@@guitaripod I'm happy to tell you, I just got the call from HR and yes, I got it
@@ka-md8ue I was extremely passive about my job search for a year before I realized I needed to get active and start sending applications. About a month ago I started sending out CVs, always being honest about my technical abilities but making it extremely clear I was willing to learn anything they needed me to, and this morning I got a call from HR and was told I was hired.
But the doge chillin tho
Haven't finished the video yet, but it's already really valuable and interesting, keep it up man
Thanks for going straight to the point and the questions... From Puerto Rico , Keep up...
Good point about teaching. It's important to hear. Thanks!
Thanks that's very motivating. I just finished my first week full time in Lambda School and your channel and patricks journey has been a huge comfort and inspiration.
What's the schooling like so far? What do they send you and how do they schedule classes? I'm looking into it myself and would like to know how things work a little
Definitely a good video. Looking forward to more content like this.
It's not full of fantasy BS of undergraduates getting hired at some top tier company with little effort.
1000 applications, 50 interviews, including a 6 hour interview. I have respect for Patrick.
I rarely comment on youtube video but this is quality stuff. I am going through the preparation for a FANG interview and this helps a lot. Keep up the good work Josh!!
Finding a job is hard but this video keep me to look up and not to look down
Waiting for that stream....
You better do it man
The algorithm needs your videos
Thanks for including the dogs in this interview.
This is pure gold 🙏🏾
Josh do more interviews like these, theyre great
Great video sir!! Keep going!! I’m an undergrad CS major and this really helps people like me, deeply appreciate it!!
great interview, love hearing other peoples perspective in the industry
Filling the void Joma Tech left ever since he got a fancy shmancy FANNG job, keep it up.
Absolutely incredible. Thank you for this stuff.
Josh, you are the first channel I've ever hit that notification bell for. Well done.
I really like this person; they seem very honest and sincere.
Patrick is a good guy
Hey there, I'm french.
Far from me trying to be offensive, this is a real "Data" style inquiry is the singular "they" required, even if you have a strong impression (which could easily be an assumption, and a wrong one, I understand that) that the guy is a "regular" male heterosexual?
Really wondering, if I should begin to use this singular "they" 🤔
Even if we have exactly corresponding pronouns in France, this kind of usage has not appeared here yet (at least, not that I'm aware of- but true, for years I've been going only for english language medias of all forms, from books to youtube and tv shows, even down to news)
(I was actually going to correct you, then I remembered "ah yes, there's the neutral use now, I guess it's getting more widely used now)
(After listening to him speak for a minute, ...mhm, isn't using "they" actually making an assumption about how Patrick himself identifies? That could be somehow insulting too, no?)
Thank you so much! I really needed this.
This video was really insightful. Great stuff!
TONS OF GEMS! MUST WATCH. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK J
So true on the teaching end. I was a TA for data structures and that was great for interview prep
thanks for making this video. it's really genuine.
Josh, your videos are getting better by each upload! Good luck man, really enjoy waking up more everyday now :)
Love your channel Josh
Another excellent video. Very helpful.
Love the mixed-format content, Josh!

This is by far the best and most genuine channel about development.
You're reminding me of Joma now, when he was growing he started these sort of videos.
Enjoying this a lot dude, nice work
But Right he doing bullshit videos
I am not a coder but i am trying to enter this industry as a concept artist and this channel has given me a lot of info on what to avoid from this big corporations.
Good stuff!

Thank you, this was good.
After all this teasing I'm finally able to see Patrick! Love it!
It is great that this channel exists. Good Content.
"I'm just building side apps hoping this works.." . I couldn't have said it better myself. You just described my life right now.
Not gonna lie: discovered this channel like 2 weeks ago and til then i just CONSUME this life knowledge to dont get slapped on from the buiseness. THANK YOU Josh for this!! Ure a great person, u say what is needed to say, regardless of such ppl still swiping all the things under the carpet nobody talks about. THANK YOU for that!!

Edit: wish i would have my brother or father telling me those things.
Hey josh I have been a sub for a while but havent been active in the subs. I am going to continue to be active in the comments because I love your transparency. You're genuine to who you are and I cant wait to see what the rest of the year and 2020 brings to you. Thanks for your content bro
I really like this guy
Excellent video
I have been self-taught for about 7 or 8 months now with java, its difficult AF. The learning process. I find myself starting over more times than I'd like but, I love the language. I just wanted to say, you have become my fav CZcamsr, you're a real inspiration and just needed to share that with you. You have helped to inspire me and for that I thank you.
Patrick seems like a very nice guy and everything he said feels relatable. The interview process on tech is exhausting to say the least. The crazy thing as that we always hear that there is a lack of specialized workers, and that there is a high demand for software engineers, but then when you go search and apply for jobs company either ghost you or simply create a 1000 steps interview process with very specific questions completely unrelated to the job. This needs to change, and part of the problem is that we as candidates accept the absurdities that are practiced in this job interviews. Not every interview needs to be "FANG" style or have you to write a code in a whiteboard that runs in first try. You can be very competent but not be in a good day. Recruiters and companies need to be able to spot talent for the job, not talent for passing interviews.
Subscribed, This is very good for me. Thanks for the awesome video
Hey josh , trying to follow your footsteps here, engineer trying to make it as a software developer. Love the channel man
Thank you Joshua.
pure gold
Patrick, how much time did you spend on each job application? Did they all have cover letters? Did you try to contact someone at the company to follow up?
I tried to include a personal cover letter, if I interviewed I sent a personable thank you note and I made sure to follow up but otherwise not much more then that
@Titrate Logic yes, I have them all saved on my old computer haha

@@JoshuaFluke1 I always wondered what 100k in the bay area is really like. Crazy high rent, city and state taxes, cost of groceries and leisure activities. There can't be much left over.
I heard from bay area residences a year or two ago that 400k is considered middle class, no not upper, MIDDLE CLASS.
@@DividendFiend Minimum wage in USA would put you in the top 2% highest earners in South Africa. Interesting how drastically it can change.
Purchasing power overall needs to increase across the U.S.
Has this ever happened to you after you got hired within 1 year the essential duties of your job changed by company policies and you position morphed into you never intended to have and is outside your industry. Or they told you would do something during interview that they overstated that actually almost never happens.

Your RB face is so refreshing, you and The Tech Lead are two of my favourites because your videos don't come across as 'eternally smiling kumbaya' productions. Just straight to the point, very interesting content.
@Solve Everything Agreed. I would definitely watch.
holy crap man, you should have your own talk show, 4real...
Hi Joshua and Patrick, love your videos, keep it up. 🤘
Crazy to see how far Patrick has come!💪🏽
He livin that good life
The best thing I ever did was walk away from the job market 6 years ago never looking back. You have skills, talents, and gifts that will make you money.....START YOUR OWN BUSINESS. You can work out your car, home, or do house visits. You don't need alot of money.
how did you find your first clients / customers who paid you enough to get by? this is the challenging first stage I find...
Hey Patrick, I'm a Lambda student, currently in the advanced React section, and the difficulty spike has been really discouraging for me. I feel like I'm just scraping by and not fully understanding the material. If I recall correctly, it was around this point that you wanted to quit. How did you push through this point? Did you spend a lot of time outside of school time studying? Do things that you were unclear on before start to make more sense the deeper you get into the curriculum?
Thank you Josh. Your videos are helping me to fight imposter syndrome. Love from India.
What are some good project ideas to add on a resume? I mainly familiar with Python (somewhat familiar with html/css/JS and node.js, mongoDB, flask, etc). Right now I only have a To-Do web App, a CRUD app, and a weather app, but these web apps are probably too common and I find it hard to come up with something new/original, and actually complete it.
your sleeping doggos are so cute!
10:16 I started working ony first project a couple days ago because I felt exactly like this I was just copy pasting coding pretty much on these free code camp classes so the minute I finished the html and css basics I started making my first webpage, I wanna learn not copy pasta.
Patrick my man I'm glad to see that you've made it through. Any tips/advice you can give before I sign up? things you wish you knew before going in?
The thing to take from this is: If they ask you about testing be hyper enthusiastic about it. Tell them about how you tested your FYP and home projects etc. it's make or break that question.
Preferably also don't say "testing in a production environment" (as happened in the video) since that is what testing environments are for. Not sure about where anyone else works but over here testing in a production environment is strictly forbidden unless bugs cannot be reproduced in a testing environment.
Great info, would like to learn Some PHP after im sufficient in MERN stack. Lots of job offers here ! Keep up the good vids Guys !
I like how Josh’s dog is dead asleep lol
9:00 Now THAT is slaped me in a face (I"m looking for a first job over a 2 month and totaly exhausted)
Curious re the ~1000 applications. Just wondering if you have to cater your resume to each and every position, or just do minor tweaks? Still learning basic code stuff so I’m far away from applying, but just curious what standard practice is in the coding world.
Thanks!
I love the way Joshua just pops his head around too the camera out of focus "subscribe to the channel"
Subscribe, thanks!
@6:47 The problem is engineers don't have bro code like the MBA or finance guys have. Most of the interviews I gave recently felt like a showcase for who's smarter - the interviewer who is also a dev are always trying one up because they have leverage.
That's a lot. My record so far is just around 400 applications.
Audio tip: If you don't want the microphone in the shot you can stick the mic a fist or so away from the forehead and move it up until it isn't in frame. And then point it slightly towards the chest.
I tried to put above but then it was in the shot of the other auxiliary cameras, and the wide angle - no winning
eddie gomez Hahaha thanks! I’m trying not to see it.

As a software engineer with almost 5 years experience, I'm about to move abroad, currently preparing for another job hunt! This video has been surprisingly valuable to me!
From what country to what country do you want to move?
Are you leaving cause of work?
@@cutliss No man, I've been wanting a change of scenery for a while. Heading to the US, other than Switzerland it's the place to be in terms of $$$ so it's a win-win.
@@hs-hs-hs oh, I thought you were leaving cause of saturation in the job market. Good luck out there
@@cutliss Plenty of jobs to be had. In my 5 years I've had 2 jobs, each took less than 2 days to find! Saturation usually applies to junior level jobs and the number of unqualified candidates out there, anyone even remotely good won't have much trouble at all!
I live in Sacramento and I gotta say, the saturation is real. While not quite the bay area, it's still in California which gives employers leeway to pick and choose.
9:20 very helpful tip to get yourself into learning, growing, and doing
A better answer for the testing question is probably "well testing is a part of a developers job. To ensure that what you made before you send it off executes the way that its supposed to. I take actual pride in the code that I make so I would definitely want it to be working when I ship it off to QA. QA would be the final checks and balance to ensure that it functions and it was made the way that it was supposed to be made."
Not "well it would be interesting for sure"
How long did it take to feel confident about applying? I've heard someone say start looking a month before. And how did you stay motivated through all that? Any advice for newbies? 😮
That's not surprising. I mean I typically apply for 500-1000 jobs as a developer with 8 years experience before I find a job I want. It takes about 10 hours to apply for 500 jobs and I probably spend 30-40 hours applying and interviewing before I take a job. If there applications are complex or the require tests before they talk to you just skip it and move to the next job.
My experience is the places that try to give me a bunch of pre interview tests or take forever to fill out an application or want you to do some insane 4 hour coding test are usually companies that pay less and I don't want to work for them. I mean if they make you jump through that many hoop to interview then they don't respect your time and it will get even worse once they are paying you their crappy wage.
see you at 400k
