The Levante Trofeo is the Best Modern Maserati - Two Takes

    If you read the spec sheet to someone: a 590 HP Ferrari-built 3.8L V8, perfect 50/50 weight distribution, double-wishbone front and multilink rear suspension, heavily rear-biased AWD, and 0-60 in 3.8 seconds with a top speed of 187, they would probably think you were talking about an exotic sport GT, not a Sport Utility Vehicle. But here we are, and the Levante Trofeo, even with some of its typical Maserati quirks, shocks both Zack and Matt with its dynamics on the road. It's Maserati's most modern-feeling car by a mile. And with power and space comparable to the BMW X5M or Cayenne Turbo, but hauling just over the curb weight of the much smaller X3M or Macan Turbo, the Levante Trofeo isn't just a fun to drive SUV, it's a ton of fun, period.
    Maserati of North America provided the vehicle, insurance, and a tank of fuel for this review.

    It looks like you guys really did have a blast in this one. I've gotten used to Zack's One Takes and seeing you two review the same cars and calling it "Twok Takes" could be your next hit. Seeing Matt's analysis while Zack is driving. And reviewing Zacks reactions while Matt is driving puts everything together really well! Excited for the live cast. Stay Full and Healthy!

    • @TheSmokingTire
      @TheSmokingTire  Před 4 lety +47

      In fairness, Maserati lowered the price of the truck a LOT between when it was launched and now. At launch it was $175k. The window sticker on mine was $147k. Not sure if they changed the price for MY19 or 20, but I wouldn't be surprised if cash on the hood brings the leftover 19 model in line with the 2020 pricing.

      Because it's a Maserati. Maserati is the lowest ranked car manufacturer. You'll hear "you can get a $130,000 Maserati for $40,000" because Maserati are pretty horrible cars for the price. They are overrated cars with a Toyota Camry level interior with the reliability of a Mini.

    I watched this video and immediately called our broker about availability. In my opinion up until now the last great Maseratis were the Bora and Ghibli SS. I own a blue over saddle leather 1970 SS that is an unrestored survivor with 38k miles. With the exception of tires, tune up parts, a headliner and other maintenance parts is all original and beautiful. Not just one of the greatest Maseratis of all time but one of the best GT cars of the era. Quite robust too for and old car. I got it from an estate sale with 29k miles and after a refurbish to make it road worthy have put 11k miles on it with almost no issues whatsoever. Matt not only do l enjoy your show l have used it as a bit if a buyers guide. A few months after your review an Alfa Montreal found it's way into my stable (every bit as fabulous as you said if not more so!) and just this past Monday took delivery of our Taycan Turbo S. So l'm curious to see how the Levante Trofeo feels in person. Thanks!

    Typically when Ferrari and Maserati use the same engine between the two cars, the Maserati uses a cross-plane crankshaft which produces the typical v8 “rumble” sound. All Ferrari V8 use a race inspired flat plane or 180deg crankshaft. These engines don’t rumble but sound good!

    I hate how there's always some bullshit with Italian car reviews, like a clearly previously broken carbon fiber ashtray lid (which doesn't just break, some douche broke it on purpose because its a review car, and then just stuffed it in or superglued it in place so that someone else "breaks" it and takes the blame) , that gives the car a bad name and makes people think it has quality issues. It doesn't. Someone breaking something by misusing it is not a sign of a low quality car. Certainly not a car that has every single surface in the interior covered in finest leather, real metal, real carbon fiber, real wood, etc., and that doesn't have a single squeak, rattle or any feeling of lack of solidity. I've driven a 5 year old Ghibli with over 200k km's on the clock that felt as tight as a drum and whose owner literally didn't have a single expense for it other than regular servicing in his time of ownership, and I know the guy well and know he wouldn't bullshit me. The real quality is below the surface, in the mechanical parts and in the engineering. The drive-train is excellent from start to finish, the chassis is excellent, the body is excellent. It actually has the highest torsional stiffness of any large SUV. Italians are quite known for that, as the Alfa Romeos always boasted about it too, and still do to this day. For example the Giulia has the highest torsional stiffness of any executive sedan on the market, despite being one of the lightest. Alfa 159 before it was the same, it had a more rigid body than the E90 3 series, and you felt that when driving it. Same is true for the Maserati Ghibli in the large executive class. They make cars that are very, very solid, mechanically speaking, and then people ignore all that because of some small detail that happens to be broken on a review sample of a car that probably 100 people drove and abused just for the sake of it.

    I don’t know if it’s worth what they are asking for it, but used for under 100k after a bit of depreciation would make this excellent!

    Its sad that infotainment and tech is such a talking point. Maserati Ghibli, Levante and the GT are excellent driver cars. Same with the Giulia and Stelvio from Alfa. Driving= handling, braking, steering, cornering, acceleration and most importantly how big of a smile it puts on your face. The Italians do it right but unfortunately most people who drive cars don’t really know what’s important.
