- Thanks for tuning in to watch my urban sketching, ink and watercolour tutorial! Don't forget to check out my channel where I have hundreds of different urban sketch tutorials, as well as other watercolour and ink sketching guides for everyone from beginners to more advanced!
If you'd like to support my channel you can buy me a 'Coffee' on KoFi - ko-fi.com/tobyurbansketch
When I reach my goal I'll upgrade my sketching tutorials with a new camera and use my old camera to give an extra view point in my videos! Perhaps my face, perhaps my watercolour palette, or some close ups of my process!
Getting the textures right in your sketches is important to get the character and feel of the place you're trying to sketch. But it doesn't have to be hard. And if you stick around to the end of this video, I'll give you my three absolute best tips and tricks to get your textures and character right.
In this urban sketching fundamentals guide, I'll show you a range of different easy tips and tricks, techniques and hacks that will get you sketching all the buildings around you, quicker, more easily and whilst taking your art up a notch.
I'll show you how I apply textures to my walls, roofs, buildings, fences and everything else I can think of - and how thinking about texture from the very first line you make can really help, and make it really easy.
It's also super important to not overdo it, and I'll demonstrate in this guide/tutorial the common pitfalls that happen when you overdo the detail, as well as if you don't quite get enough down on the page.
I'll also use a few reference photos, to give you an idea of the textures I'm aiming for so you can judge for yourself if I'm doing a good job or not!

So helpful, many thanks.
Great 😃
Found this out by doing exactly that lol. I did, as a beginner a relatively ok drawing then completely ruined it by too much detail and as you say paint did nothing for it at all. I’m learning as I go and watching your tutorials is such a great help. I never ever thought this type of sketching would appeal to me as I love soft watercolour paintings of flowers and landscapes. I just sit here and draw even what’s on my side table lol or photos. One day I might actually be brave enough to take a sketch pad out with me. Thank you Toby, don’t ever doubt the help you’re giving people. 😊
Thanks very much for this lovely comment

This video is great.

I like the fact that you are including which colours you choose in your tutorials as well as the perspective from which you look at your subjects.
