Mad respect for the man who lost his leg. He's not bitter against sharks because of it. He understands that a shark is just doing what its evolved to do.

+James Banner No we're not. We have an ego which gets butthurt and then tries to compensate by proving something. Surfing and recreational swimming aren't necessities to stay alive for humans. Swimming and eating are necessities for a shark to survive. Humans can easily survive on vegetation, although it is a boring diet.

+James Banner That is the point. We do things that aren't necessary and must accept the risks/ consequences to said actions. There are people who fish to feed their families. You think the corporations that own Chicken of the sea, Bumble bee tuna are in it to feed their families? They fish on a mass level for profit that far exceeds their "needs". If you don't know the difference between a Polynesian fisherman and a giant corporation over fishing that's on you.
Of course there's a risk, but that doesn't mean you have to except it. That's why people put out shark nets. What are you talking about? And who's talking about corporations? I really like how the survivor of the attack looks at the whole situation.
It is obviously very sad when a surfer, diver or swimmer lose their life to a Shark, but the ocean is their domain, their world, and the risks are always present, the sharks are not to blame, if you want to play in their world, you know the risks.
Instead of trying to control everything, people should have the freedom to risk their lives if they want to. Freedom is God-given. If we want to take chances with our lives, its our right to. Does everyone who swims in the water get attacked? No. People should have the right to make their own choices. Otherwise, our freedoms will be taken from us, as well as the ocean.

Plenty of ocean, plenty of uninhabited beaches, there is no issue claiming areas for ourselves free of predators. Loosing a child is one of the worst pain somebody can feel in this life.
I think any parent would prefer to die instead of the child.
Time is a robber. It takes memories away... some memories you can't let go as a father. You go against the natural way... only keeping the initial pain makes this memory never fade away. A perpetual opened wound... until the end.
You can use to be a kid but you can't use to be a parent. Once you're a parent, it's forever, even if you child is dead. You stay the parent.
I am 38 years old. I've grown on this coast, lived their, learned from fishermen from my family and practiced all my life.
No one has never seen such a thing.
These waters became deadly as hell.
We are now surrounded by a deadly trap. Like in a jail...

@@savagequeen3798 We live in a tiny Island isolated by the sea surrounding us. These sharks are not endangered and very prolific. They were not there in the 40 little km of coast we have as islanders. And this for 400 years ! They are more prolific than tunas that the industries overfish ! They kill other endangered shark species like reef sharks and reduce the population of all fishes, including great hammer head sharks. The irresponsible policies made that.
For now 9 years, the risk of being eaten alive is so high that our 40km of coast line take every year more than 50% shark attacks in the whole world and 50% of the fatal attacks in the world. In such a way that shark had beached themselves on people to eat them while they were just the feet in the water. It happened to dogs also, just passing by close to the water.
It is so intense that swimming, bathing and nautical activities are banned for 6 years now non stop eccept in some tiny shallow lagoons. On a tropical isolated island where culture, economy and feeding rely a lot on the sea.
It made a social issue, divided the society, destroyed all umployements on the coast and tourism. Created a unprecedented rate of unumployment in an island higly touched by this plague and where leaving the island is very difficult.
And you count the intensity of a life loss in terms of number of dead only ?
A kid of a friend of mine died in these attacks, I lost two young friends, others of mine are highly mutilated, which does not enter in the count you do, of course. I've been charged by a shark in the lagoon, the last place the authorities made us believe safe in our tropical island.
I don't even mention the impact of the devoration seen and feared by thousands of people and the traumatic aspects in such a tiny area and population where you see thé sea from everywhere you stand everyday.
And you dare say you're sorry while saying in the same time some kids killed is not a real issue because it's not a great number ?

The life of a child or of a human is not a number. The life of your child is more important than the life of a tuna or a shark. Saying the opposite way would be the greatest hypocrisy possible !

... Elio's father, and the images of Elio, sure had me in tears more than once. I admire and envy surfers greatly; I totally lack their passion and courage. But when I was a little kid, what seemed to me to be a blonde, tan mountain of muscle must have seen the longing in my eyes, and gave me something I'll never, *ever* forget. He put me on his board, paddled out, instructed me on what we were going to try to do when a good wave came along ... and when one did, I was *soooooooooo* obedient, and he was incredibly gifted, and he got me up onto his shoulders for the ride of my Life.
I'm 66 now ... and if I'm allowed time enough to relive my entire Life as I pass on, I'll hold as closely as I can onto that sunlit afternoon when I was flying, and free, forever.

The money they need to keep living on the island can continue to dry up long past the point where they can support themselves and their families. Perhaps they shall leave the island for better places in the world to seek a living. Or perhaps they shall behave like any people who find their ability to provide food for their families threatened and so it shall become a dark day to be a bullshark in Reunion waters.

@@gilian2587 If tourism dries up because of a species that has always existed in the waters of the ocean, then that's the way it is. Its not sustainable if that is going to be the reason for the collapse of the economy. You can't let people get eaten by sharks, but you can't very well kill every threat of the sea you rely on. Sharks were here long before people, and yet some people continue with the misguided belief that their tourist traps are more important than the environment. You can call me a tree hunger, but the blatant disregard for nature and it's essential systems is what nearly every generation in recent history has done with the excuse of 'but the economy', and it's not really panning out too well for those of us being left to clean it all up. If indeed that is even still possible. Not to mention that the only reason they lived in relative peace for all those years was because of the over fishing and the destruction of the reef. Of course you will be safe when you've killed off all the fish and marine life. But that would have eventually translated to the island food chain and slowly it would have caused them other problems.

Surfed all my life. Most in Humboldt Ca. Seen several Great Whites in close proximity to me. Had several friends/acquaintances bitten. Any real surfer knows it is a part of the greatest sport on this planet. Keeps crowds down too. Without wilderness we are less as humans

My respect to the young man who lost his leg. It didn't make him bitter and want to kill all sharks. My heartfelt condolences to the people who have lost loved ones to shark attacks. But it is time to move forward and figure out how to protect our swimmers and surfers who find the ocean such fun. Good luck to all and let's find a good fix for both.

I really appreciate the balance of views presented in this documentary, it really highlighted how complex the situation is.
I like how they portrayed both sides of the argument, it's becoming increasingly prevalent in today's journalism to have extreme bias to one side. I hope people realise that it's not as simple as 'Just don't surf', or 'Just get rid of the sharks' because none of these ideas will ever work if they don't make comprises with the other one. There is also a lot of comments about 'The sharks are just doing what they evolved to do' but we are just doing the same, The community on Reunion island has evolved and grown over time and created a deep and beautiful culture based around the sea. It's like going to an un-contacted tribe and making them conform to your culture and your traditions, humans are animals too and although we have a vastly higher intellectual capability, we are still animals and as animals no matter how far we advance, we will always be subject to our primal instincts, and as humans we need the meta-physical (Culture, Community, tradition etc) just as much as the physical requirements in order to survive and live a full and bountiful life.

Not sure how 18 people attacked and 7 killed in 5 years constitutes a crisis. Pretty sure more than 7 people have died on the island from non shark inflicted injuries in that time period.
Death by a shark have much more impact on people than death on the road, which is far more common.
Hence, tourism drop in those lands, which cause direct economic problems to people living of it there.
You can compare this to airplane crashes. Air plane is by far the safest to take if you wanna go from A to B. But, even if accident are very rare, each of them is talked about for many many years, compare to cars.

It's a fucking ocean, one that has always had a large number of sharks. They took the dumbass risk of creating a business based off a dangerous activity. That's like me moving to the african safari and saying, "i want to create a tourism business to show african wildlife to tourists. if they want to see it though, they have to go walking around to enjoy the sites with nothing to protect themselves." Then when lions attack the tourists and you start losing business, you want to exterminate all the lions and blame them.

It doesnt become a crisis because 7 people died, it becomes a crisis when the island is seeing; tourism (one of their biggest incomes) rapidly decrease, the most popular and favourite beaches are shut from the public, more control is needed over the general public, the government is needing to intervene on peoples lives, many surfers and swimmers are not allowed in the waters, the island is seeing a loss of GDP resulting in less economic activity, and MANY other things that just result from this. Obviously 7 people dead isn't a crisis, but what is a crisis are the things that come from it which are impact hundreds of thousands of people's lives (literally).

that's the hubris of humans. Think the entirety of the earth was provided for us. No, many other life forms know how to live in harmony with it without destroying it.
Just watched a more recent documentary on this island and they have a theory that a recent water plant project within the time the attacks has spiked might have diverted rain runoff that used to drain on the other side of the island towards the populated beaches. This creates more murky waters which these sharks like. Before it was known that most of the sharks were more likely to be found on the other side of the island because that was the more murky water. It's a theory but it might explain the sharks migration towards the populated side of the island.
I would say that's very correct. Bulls and tigers love those conditions especially bulls they travel up brackish rivers and they can go deep into those types of rivers. We have a river that is fed by the ocean on both ends you can go to the place where the two meet here in my home town and follow our longest river all the way to Tampa Bay where it ends. The other is shorter and still draws water from the ocean but ends up ending not that far from here.
Sounds plausible. Surfers know to stay away from river mouths for this reason (and some others, such as debris and sometimes creatures washed out through the river also attract the sharks).
The pain that father (and mother I’m sure) are suffering, knowing his son suffered, it’s just unbearable. 😭

I mean it sucks but I have to agree. Im not some crazy animal guy but were already taking all the land, cant get mad when a shark bites in shark infested water. Thats the risk you take. Plus they can surf on the other side of that island if theyre worried about the reserve area.

I live in reunion island, we have a beach or sharks do not come. And it's rare a man dies here by a shark, we have panels to inform the surfers not to swim if he dies, it is not the fault of the shark. I live here and you can die most often by a bee than a shark

The sharks are just doing what they have been doing for MILLIONS of years. They have a rule; if it's in the water, it's food. Simple. And if they can find food around Reunion Island, well, that's where they will go. And they do NOT differentiate between fish and mammal. Being human does NOT put you off the menu. Humans in the water are food. That is shark logic.

Sharks don't attack humans out of aggression, it's usually because they mistake us for seals. And you have a higher chance of dying to a dog than you do to a shark.

It's like going out into the african wild trying to pet animals, then all of the sudden wondering why the giant jungle cat is eating the shit outta you. Sharks do not want to eat humans. We are not in their food chains, however tiger sharks are known to be very experimental eaters. But most sharks do not bite humans intentionally. It’s just a case of mistaken identity. Lying on a surfboard or bodyboard makes humans look exactly like seals, sea lions, and sea turtles, all favorite prey of large sharks (bull, tiger). In addition, the splashing of surfing/bodyboarding makes the shark think the potential seal/sea lion/etc is struggling, hence it is easier to catch. Sharks usually take a bite to investigate, realize it’s not what they wanted, and leave. But because their bites are so massive it can cause major blood loss, and death. Sharks do not intentionally bite humans.

Drones are better spotters than having divers in the water near the surfers.
Not for Reunion Island. It has proven to be dramaticly unefficient. As it resulted in several serious shark attacks including one fatal.
In South Africa, with great white sharks coming on a regular slope, with dark back on white sands, yes, drones and shark watchers outside of the waters are a very efficient solution.
In Reunion Island, we're dealing with bull sharks and also tiger sharks, coming from very steep slopes over coral reefs, hiding in complex labyrinths and coral caves.
I've worked for nearly a decade on this issue in Reunion.
The studies showed that drones are not able to prevent sharks from being close to people. Many Times, the sharks were there, people monitoring the drone pictures and even AI programs not able to spot them at time.
People underwater create a stress for bull sharks. They really don't like to be seen. They rely a lot on stealth. You break that, they will not be at their best. They percieve territorial occupation under the water as potential predators and threat to them.
It works if they fear people underwater identifying them as spearfishers. They're not affraid of them but fear them and keep them at distance. A kind of mutual respect and fear.
But we witnessed that these animals have great adaptabilty skills and tend to get used to the underwater watchers... The sharks come more and more closer. They're just loosing their fear, understanding there is no threat after all. We already had to evacuate several times.

Sadly the situation has not changed a lot. It's just a little bit less crazy as more and more people invest in individual shark reppelents and go in the water only in very specific conditions. It lowers a little bit the risk.
But all nautical activities are still banned on the whole Island except in the lagoons. The problem is more and more, bigger and bigger bull sharks enter in the lagoons. Making the authorities ban it also more often but not permanently.
As a local myself, from a native family, I can tell you that it's totally false that the locals did not enter in the water. The women in red hurted so much so many people and played with racist stereotypes.
The truth is more complex. Our people always had a complicated relationship with the ocean.
Due to the story of slavery, the majority in the past feared the sea.
But almost all the coasts were villages of... Fishermen. These people were in the water everywhere the attacks now happens without major issues at their times.
It was traditional fishing and not nautical activities. Recreative use of the ocean was not very developped.
There was a lot of drawning and some shark attacks. Most of the population of the local were farmers or sugar cane producers. So the population going daily to the ocean was not dominant.
Nautical activities were seen as introduced by strangers or people from France. It begun during the late 70s. In the mid 80s it was already popular and native people already had appropiated them nautical activities. Little by little.
I'm forty and when I was 13, nautical activities were not bound to exterior people. It was very popular and I practiced 20 years almost weekly in the zone of the attacks without any shark issue.
But older generations not coming from fishermen villages still believed native never go to the sea despite the obvious origin of their sea food... Denial.
These people represent many many votes. Politics don't care about historical rightness.
It's easier to think that if something bad happens and there are strangers, so that's their faults.
Adding to that, a sociological study showed that the majority of the population unconsciously have a bad representation of people going in the sea because in the past, they were people serving the people who having slaves.
Regarding to the shark representation in the population, there is still a taboo and a stereotypical view of the animal.
Seen as an angelic fish or a bloody monster.
Both are false. These are wild predators.
The real problem to me is that they blamed and destroyed small traditional fisheries in the name of ecology. While the same instances pollute and overfish in the Indian Ocean.
Traditionnal fishing never hurted the environnent and made thé dangerous sharks fear the zones where human were.
For all this zone, fishing has been banned for too long. It's a green business. I'm for a marine réserve which means regulation and preservation. Not ideology and politics to earn huge amounts of credits.
The elite of my Island is corrupted. They blame the victims and put sanctions on innocent people while polluting and overfishing.
And it works well. It's very difficult for the population to des what's behind thé certain in such emotional topics.
A classic story... Sadly.
I think there is no way back. It's over. It's been ruined for too long. WE won't get back to a balanced environnement.

Shark lovers, we just got to hope and pray, that the fishermen who are catching the sharks and told to kill any over 10m are a little..sane. Like maybe if its just barely stretching the tape measure to get 10m they let it go, and live.
we are not killing them for food, at least the scientists aren't. I hope that the fishermen are not being paid per head of shark they kill and haul in, by the french shark researchers, basically by the taxpayer at that point. Because that would create a positive feedback loop (which would not be good for the sharks.)
We just have to hope that the researchers they are good, and that the fisher man are not all about profit, and are paid for their time, not their results. Because to pay them for their results would be a very bad practice. In this case, sharks are not really able to be sold at market, besides the shark fins. And i think that is banned in most first world countries anyways at this point aside from East Asia. So, because the sharks cannot be sold, the fisherman really couldn't turn a profit then for the ones they haul, they just have to chuck them. But if the scientists paid them for the numbers of heads they brought back, and they also could be sold that would be making a good situation out of a bad one. Not good for sharks, but good for the economy of a bad process of killing sharks simply by fear and discriminating by length alone.

Well if he does indeed see a shark coming, simply resting his arms and legs on the board would greatly limit the chance of loosing one of them. That’s not stupid of him, and he knows of the risks anyways. Surfers will always go into the water knowing they can loose a limb or their life so there’s nothing wrong in trying to anticipate the risks when possible.

Any of you been that close to being shark nuggets, I have! 6 foot Hammerhead! Followed me all the way to shore, then followed me( and my two boys) a little over a mile. Throwing himself on the shore. We pushed him with boards back in the water once because he couldn't get turned around. They do not give up on a meal that easily when they get that big. I learned in front of my boys and other beach goers - respect. You want to share space with any animal large enough to swallow you... You best be ready to forfeit. I don't surf that area anymore. Walk it? Yes! Small sharks will come as far up as possible for smaller fish, nuzzle your feet! I don't touch them anymore either. Too much confidence is a dangerous companion!🖤

I understand as a father, the pain and grief, and the resentment, at the same time... But blaming the sharks, its only,fueling an already bad situation, for the islanders.

As a surfer myself, for 40 years, everytime i enter the water, iam aware, of the risks that might, come with it. And if something happens, its my full responsability.

Very good documentary. It's heart breaking seeing the father talk abt his son. This vid is 6 years old, is there an update in the situation? Did the humans find a way to protect themselves without harming the sharks who just live their lives.
We, humans, don't respect nature and we think that the PLANET is ours, but it's not...I really feel for the families that have lost someone, but this is a world problem, not only sharks, we dont respect envioroment, animals or even other humans and we pretend to fix the problem by killing "sharks" when the problem is human itself. When animals are hunted in certain areas they look for a new one but we manage to change nature, be the hunters not the prey, and we should understand that this behaviour chage all the ecosistems
I do believe the planet is ours but not solely ours. We share it with all the other living beings inhabiting it. It being ours should give us that much more incentive to take care of it, and when we take care of it should be in favor of all living things on this planet

"the ocean needs to be reconquered." i think the loss of his son made him lose his marbles a little. that being said, i think shark nets might be the best way to solve the problem. give the people a couple of beaches that are 100% safe, and surfers that want unprotected free waters will simply have to take the risk - like elsewhere. knowing surfers they're mostly fine taking that risk.

My heart goes out to all who have suffered pain and loss associated with shark attacks. Being from Florida in the U.S., I am fully aware of the danger involved in swimming in the ocean. I don't swim anymore, either in salt water or fresh water sources. If I want to swim, I swim in a pool. There's just too many critters in the water for me to feel comfortable.
Humans have felt comfortable and relatively safe in the ocean for a very long time, but times are changing now, and the ocean, unfortunately, is not our domain. Just like any other aspect of mother nature, we are not truly in control.
We must change our behavior, not change nature.
This documentary was very well done and communicated the concerns of opposing views. I do t think there is a simple solution to the problem but pleased t9 see how they are taking different approaches.
