  • This tutorial shows you how to make a laser cut box with a lid that slides out using engraved slots. We'll use a Cuttle template to make a box of any size and any material thickness. We cover material recommendations (MDF core), machine settings (including our recommended settings for Glowforge), assembly, and how to test your own materials to engrave a slot to the perfect depth.

    Super excited about Engrave Depth Tester. I've been working on a box with a similar groove and this is going to speed testing up so much.

      Yeah! Engraving is such a time-consuming operation so being systematic will save a lot of time in the long run.

    If you want to sidestep the issues with burning that groove accurately you could use a mini router, and you could even construct a mini router table to make it easier. This would also free you up to use any material you want.

    I found your video informative in that I didn't know that some woods use MDF in the middle? Thanks, I'll check for that....

    Would this work with acrylic as well ?
    Wondering whats the best way to create acrylic boxes with sliding/snap close lid.

    Thanks so much - I recently bought a pro membership and appreciate the outstanding tools provided - however, I'd love to see a box-making template that utilises a living hinge framework if possible. I'm not technically minded to create one from scratch myself just yet so a template would be fantastic!

    • @Cuttle
      @Cuttle  Před rokem +1

      Sure! Do you have something specific in mind for a box with a living hinge? I can imagine, for example, the bottom is a rounded rectangle, and the vertical edges of the box are then curved using a living hinge. Perhaps the whole thing has a top that goes on and off like the Heart Box. -Toby

    • @artistrobfuller
      @artistrobfuller Před rokem

      @@Cuttle Absolutely! You could apply the living hinge framework to make heart shaped or even rounded boxes too! In fact I'm sure you clever lot could allow users to choose from a selection of shapes in the template if you wanted to!

    @Cuttle Hello. Is it possible to make a box template with different thicknesses? I mean the thickness of the box lid will differ from the thickness of the box walls. For example, the base of the box will be made of 9 mm paulownia, and the lid will be made of 3 mm plywood. In this case, not only the thickness of the engraving will be recalculated, but also the height of the side walls of the box. Thank you. with respect to you, Alexey

    • @Cuttle
      @Cuttle  Před 9 měsíci

      While we don't officially support this on this template, I think you could do it with a bit of a hack on the settings. First you'd set your base box dimensions and material thickness (9mm).
      Then, in Advanced, there is a setting engraveTolerance. Normally this makes the slot slightly larger (by 0.2mm) than the lid's thickness. But since you are using a thinner lid, we can set this negative: in your case 3mm - 9mm + 0.2mm = -5.8mm.
      Finally, increase lidLip until you have your slot where you want it. By eyeballing the preview, I set it at 4mm and it looked about right.
      I haven't tried this and can't guarantee this will all work, but just wanted to get you this info if you want to go "off road"...

      @@Cuttle Thank you very much. That helped. I had to manually modify the layout a bit in CorelDraw, but it was easy. With a negative value of the groove width, the size of the front side (which is the smallest without a groove) will be larger by the thickness of the top cover.

    What laser cutter machine are you using?

    • @Cuttle
      @Cuttle  Před rokem +1

      We're using a Glowforge Basic in this video, but any CO2 laser cutter should work for cutting and engraving a slot into ~1/8inch thick MDF-core material.
