I loved this movie from start to finish, but I can't help but cry when I see the outcome of this beautiful love story, the hug between Tom and Patrick defines everything, finally after so long they got back together, I must say that It also hurt me to see that Marion leaves the house, asking Tom to take care and love Patrick since she felt guilty seeing that the two of them had been separated, knowing that they still loved each other. Without a doubt, it is a story worth reading and I hope to do that very soon, I would love it!

While I agree, the book did provide more back story.
And I feel they should have included the story of "Tom the policeman with a problem", and the part when Patrick moves to his mom's place (cos I didn't understand why he didn't go to meet Tom initially when I watched the movie only/before reading the book)
