- Synthesisers have this image of producing machinelike, controlled sounds. In this beginners #sounddesign tutorial, let's set up a #synthesiser so it reacts to your style of playing in a more natural way, allowing for a more expressive, lyrical style of playing, like on a #piano. Table of contents:
00:00 introduction
00:13 what are "expressive sounds"?
01:07 control inputs your synth can react to
01:36 mapping velocity to sound level / loudness
03:24 mapping velocity to filter cutoff frequency
05:56 Filter /Amp envelope for more natural sounding patches
07:43 mapping aftertouch to oscillator 2 loudness and filter cutoff frequency
09:28 adding effects
10:05 short demo
10:57 other important things to consider

Some bands / artists I've been following for a long time are (among others) Massive Attack, Pink Floyd, Pet Shop Boys, Archive, A-Ha, Yes, Porcupine Tree, John Mellencamp, Jean-Michel Jarre, Metallica, Peter Gabriel and Perturbator. So my music will kind of sound like those (without ever reaching the greatness of those artists, of course). :-) - Hudba
I would recommend setting the velocity sensitivity of the amp envelope in the envelope menu rather than modulating oscillator levels in the matrix. The matrix can have some clicking/responsiveness issues when used for some velocity modulations, but the envelopes have velocity sensitivity built in.
You're right. But then again, it'd be more user friendly if Novation pulled all those "input options" into the mod matrix menu...
I subscribed because of your well written comment responces, I like a youtuber who engage with the audience. I just noticed this video, I have a Peak so I'll be using your tips.
Talking to like-minded people is a very big reason I'm doing this. Where I live, _everyone_ is into metal and hard rock. And don't get me wrong, I love those genres, but I also love being super nerdy on synthesisers. :-)
Oh, and thanks for subscribing. Always appreciated - getting this number past the 10k limit will perhaps help me to do some things that are on my bucket list. :-)
Very enjoyable listen!
Thank you!
Subscribed. Please feel better soon, Sad Piano™ 😂
Thank you very much! Sad Piano saw a silver lining on the horizon and stopped weeping. For now. :-)
I do love my Peak!
Me, too! :-)
Me, too!!!
Great video. Good job!
Thanks for watching! :)
My MAN!!!! Great explanation and video bro, loved it and very nice short demo in the end : ) loved the ending with the C and B notes ;) you Feel Hitter you
Glad you enjoyed it! :)
@@mr_floydst Oh i dod a lot
Nice sound design tutorial. It's truely impressive how expressive synths can be. Been recently playing with a friend and he was surprised how much the synth lead changed in timbre while I played.
Thank you! Did you use your self-made synth for that? (I'm sorry I didn't yet take an in-depth look at that, but I'll do! It's on my list of things. ;-) )
@@mr_floydst Yes, actually I did :). There is currently not much new going on with it because I'm having my finals exams soon. So no hurry ;)
