Oddly enough, Danny having never read the novels makes his reactions a lot more Interesting. Being able to hear the perspective of an outsider looking in on a very well established fandom brings up a lot of unique points that I would have never thought of as someone who's completed the series. Especially how Danny views the internal conflicts between Xie Lian and Hua Cheng, and how he lacks knowledge of their pasts
Do the novels not follow the same storyline?
@@bluebelljingle the storyline is the same - but the novel is finished and out, and it's faster to read. In other words, novel readers (and manhua's too) _know_ everyone's backstories already! And hoo-boi, it's quite a story. A kind of story you will reread just to see how everything feels after You Know What You Know!

Ohhh, you haven't even scratched the surface of political or trauma yet. It get WAY darker in the books. Xie Lian is very much a badass, one of the THE most badass badasses. He's just had 800 years (give or take) to work on hiding it.

I just watched the series and then got to the first book, not willing to wait to long for new content. So I thought 'What is the backstory of the nice, sweet Xie Lien?'. And then the first chapter hit me with "So he basically ascended for the second time only to go on a killing spree in Heaven and see how many gods he can murder before being cast out again. And he DID manage to kill a lot. Like a LOT. It was a literal bloodbath." So yeah, can't wait for more darkness after the initial suprise.

Qianqiu breaking his arm was such a great moment for me. I’ve seen some people call him stupid for it but I really appreciate that despite how much he “hates” Xie Lian, he is an incredibly kind, fair and honorable person.

He's genuinely so earnest and cares a lot about fairness and honesty! Even when they were in Ghost City investigating Hua Cheng on suspicion that he (pretty likely!) had something to do with the disappearance of Ming Yi, I believe Shi Qingxuan suggested something along the lines of Xie Lian telling Hua Cheng he was just in Ghost City to visit him so he could get his guard down and then snoop around to investigate. And Lan Qianqiu was like 'Wait but you guys are friends right? You can't lie to your friends! It's not right to be dishonest with people who trust you!'
Like??? Even when they're literally in this realm to investigate a crime (which they have reason to believe Hua Cheng was involved with) Qianqiu still cares about Xie Lian not being deceitful to someone who considers him a friend, even if that friend is suspected of wrongdoing

Everyone's blinded by the soft boi exterior, but Xie Lian is so very badass and so very unhinged; he still has his cursed shackles from banishment--he doesn't have access to his spiritual energy/god powers and hasn't for 800 years now--so almost everything we've seen him do is a feat of pure physical strength and ability.
Also, Xie Lian doesn't technically control the ribbon. Ruoye is a sentient object/demon with its own free will, in much the same way as E-ming is for Hua Cheng. It just loves Xie Lian a lot and is very dedicated to protecting him.
We should have started him on Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation, I feel like that's way more his style and he's be super into the fights. I really hope he watches it in the future, it's such an amazing show.

@@Levsa399Jun Wu calls him by the place he was from for a specific reason. Technically Xie Lian is his given name and Taizi Dianxia is his title, or "his highness the crown prince." You don't find out Jun Wu's reasoning until much later in the series and who knows how much the Donghua will cover from the books.

That's the thing. We love the series because we know what happens in the books and we are willing to eat the crumbs provided by the show through censorship. Also, you can't approach it like any western series, the rules are just not the same. But I love watching you react to it anyway.
Also, Only Jun Wu calls Xie Lian Xian Le. That is the name of his fallen kingdom, but not his name. And Xie Lian is also Jun Wu's favourite, so obviously murder is nothing that can't be forgiven! His little baby must have a reason!
Xianle is Xie Lian’s heavenly title (and the name of his kingdom. It means something like “favored by heaven”) Wind Master and a few of the other gods also call him that.
He is also Jun Wu’s favorite. 😅

XL is a martial arts master. He’s better than any of the others, bare handed or with weapons. He doesn’t need to use the ribbon. HC would hesitate to take him on if XL was at full power. The two gods fighting in his palace were his subordinates when they were all mortal. When he fights, he is so fast you can barely see his movements. He knows that if he fought LQQ with his sword he would beat him easily. And might well kill him. XL is a total badass.
The flashbacks in season 2 are less tiresome than the ones from season 1 because they directly involve XL and/or HC. There’s no long-winded story that only peripherally involved XL (although was part of his life, eg when he was General Hua at Banyue).
THIS. I know it's bc Danny hasn't read the books but even HC wouldn't dare fight Xie Lian. He'd get his ass whooped lol.
Danny is missing a lot of context related to this chinese martial arts worlds we get used to. We know that any spiritual weapon can be more powerful that actual guns, and how strong cultivators, and gods in this case, can be.

I wouldn't fault you for not being gripped Danny. I genuinely think this show isn't meant to be watched casually. The slow pacing, characterization, and emphasis on drawing parallels between characters is mostly meant to satisfy book readers.
HOWEVER, I don't think you'd run into that problem with the author's other series, Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation (Mo Dao Zu Shi). It's a lot more plot oriented, action oriented, and fast paced. Genuinely I think you'd have a ball with it, provided you keep a handy list of all the names since that's the part that gets confusing. :)

Jokes aside, xie lian is in fact, a bastard. The thing is that you're seeing him in a period of his life when he wakes up everyday and tries to be better. Remember that he can break a tree in two and defeat a man without spiritual powers, he's strong as hell. There's a reason why he doesn't fight with swords, because if he did then the story would be over.
He's not afraid of Hua Cheng / San Lang because he knows that if he ever tried to hurt him Xie Lian could kick his ass. Yeah, believe me, Xie Lian is an amazing character, he's powerful, he's nice, and he's a bastard.

Yes, he always had others' best interests in mind when he acted, but he was over-confident in his own abilities while he was developing them and was.. well, just out of touch. He had and still does have remnants of major flaws, but that doesn't make him a bad person. He was targeted because x was jealous of his naivety and believed that anyone in a bad position would have their morals turned upside down. "Bastard" perfectly suits him to be honest. He looks down on others a lot as a bad habit; he just happens to be surrounded by the most gorgeous powerful beings he could be, which kind of overshadows how he thinks about regular people.
Reminder this is the same guy that looked at a young girl dying and was still pitying her for how ugly she is 😭

He’s the only one who chose to save a falling child who would’ve been killed, and not apologize for it.

But on the topic of that he was only one who showed her kindness, defended her, and made sure to protect her from further humiliation while the others either outwardly mocked her or did nothing because of how she looked.
He’s the guy who stayed with her during her final moments, tried to comfort her, and said he’d take care of her friend. He listened to her wish she’d had a better chance at life.
She died trying to save him because of how kind he was to her.
He didn’t have his followers kowtow at his altar, he had them stand because didn’t like the stance that humans were beneath gods.

A big part is Xie Lian’s core never changed. He learned some stuff along the way and learned to view things with more nuance but even back then, majority of the choices he made would remain the same.

Yeah so this one day I had to go sit in a waiting room all day for jury duty and I almost took one of the novels to read while I was waiting. And then I actually looked at the cover and decided I probably better not carry that one with me... :)

@@xielianobsessor I bought it with pride! I also found out that most people who aren’t familiar with Danmei don’t realize the characters on the cover are men. My sister thought XL was a woman because the lighting in the cover art made his robes look dusty pink, the long hair, and she thought the cinnabar on his fingers was nail polish. After I let her get a closer look, she realized her mistake. 😅
After hearing Danny's thoughts at the end, I think he'd really take a liking to this series during Black Water arc. Once the twists start and characters' secrets are being revealed the series really get really tense and deep and emotional. What we're seing now is basically the set up and the payoff is really satisfying (and painful at times).
My favorite thing about mxtx's writing is that all of the characters have so much depth that actually affects every choice they make (its more than just dramatic backstory for the sake of it). If you're trying to figure out the main throughline of the story atp (without spoiling any plot twists), you could say that its uncovering the past (mainly xie lians) to discover corruption in the present. Its kind of like a road trip story were we slowly uncover the secrets and themes trip by trip. (I also really love dissecting the themes but i wont get into that now)
As someone who read the books and manhwa I was screaming at the top of my lungs on some of his comments.

The reason why it feels so slow is probably because its an adaptation of like 8 books, each season being 1 book, so it's still setting up the main plot. Super fun seeing you react to it though !!

I'm a little disappointed that they didn't include the part about Xie Lian telling him that if he fights with him he will kill him because he was very cool at that moment.
This situation with xie lian and Hua cheng is actually really sad cause xie lian doesn't care that he was hurt he's so used to pain now, while hua cheng couldn't care less about the burnt building cause he enjoys rebuilding it, interior design is one of his many artistic hobbies, he'd love it if xie lian just came and watched him rebuild it all

Danny, you have meet the main antagonist.. there are just a bunch of minor ones you have to go through for that reveal .Yeah, Xie Lian seems really nice and he is, but he is a freaking martial god with 800 years of experience and there is a reason he is sky daddy’s favorite.with all the positive and negatives that entails. The censorship really sucks which is why the dub team tries to put in as much as they can.

Regarding the kidnapping bit, in the novel San Lang only grabs him by his hand and talks to FangQing duo. In the Manhua, San Lang grabs Xie Lian by his waist and just leaves. Essentially the animators did an amazing job and included both the versions!
And regarding the hologram thing, San Lang actually touched Xie Lian's temple (as it's seen that Xie Lian communicates telepathically through touching his temple and such) and invaded the space that way.
