Yeah, I heard it as soon as she'd got it: that Strat has that subtle John Mayer tone.
And it takes the right player to get it out of that plank of course, but picking the right one is a good starting point.
Personally, I've been hunting for an affordable Fender Strat Plus from the 1987-1996 era for ± three decades.
Mayer uses a rare raspberry red one on "Queen of California".

I found a black one. A raspberry red one would have cost me €1100.- more, and I'm not such an idiot that I think I can hear the difference between the two finishes. But the difference beween regular AlNiCo pickups and the old Fender Lace Sensors is huge. The latter were already noiseless before the Fender Noiseless PUs, very subtle and never harsh. I wanted that. But it's not my only Strat. I've got a bunch: 4 of them came from Fender.
