Clemente caught Dedenne on behalf of his sister, Bonnie. He gave it to her. He said he'd hold on to it until Bonnie was old enough to become a trainer/raise it. But she took care of it from the moment he captured it.

I always thought it was weird that Misty had a Staryu and a Starmie. What was the point of that? Also, Starmie is my favorite Pokemon, and I disliked that Misty's never seemed to accomplish anything.
I never understood the point of giving May a Squirtle. She already had Bulbasaur. Squirtle was only caught to promote the Kanto remakes… but like I just said… she already had Bulbasaur who could’ve easily done that? Strange indeed. I don’t know why the anime misses opportunities they have right under their noses

@@brianodonnell4496 she already had a Bulbasaur. A starter from the remakes. It’s evolved form Venusaur was even on the box art for LeafGreen. I know Bulbasaur was caught in Hoenn, but they still could’ve used it as promotion regardless. It could have gotten much more focus and screen time in Battle Frontier… but instead they put it at the lab and replaced it with Squirtle.
