  • Maroons catch Warriors Napping (August 16, 2004)
    by Peter Atencio
The University of the Philippines Maroons caught the UE Warriors on one of their worst days yesterday in the 67th UAAP men's basketball tournament.
They took advantage of the absence of top gunners Nino Canaleta and Paolo Hubalde for the most of the game to hack out a 66-57 victory over the Warriors.
Toti Almeda fired 16 points, including six in the third quarter period, as he joined forces with Marvin Cruz for a decisive 20-10 run, which enabled the Maroons to take charge with a 50-40 spread when the last quarter started.
It was the Maroons' third consecutive victory following wins over the NU Bulldogs and the UST Tigers. UP thus improved its record near the bottom of the standings to 3-6.
I made a promise to my players that we will go after the teams, which beat us while I was gone," said UP coach Lito Vergara.
Despite the loss, which came three days after UE upset the Ateneo, 64-59, the warriors remained in third at 5-4.
UE coach Dindo Pumaren said he found little inspiration in the games of Canaleta and Hubalde in the third quarter. So he had them pulled out and replaced by Marcie Arellano and Robert Labagala, two cagers whom he thought would provide a spark in the last canto.
His gameplan didn't work as the Maroons came out stronger, and after UE threatened to within, 46-52, UP bounced back on Almeda's inside plays.
Arellano showed the way for the Warriors with 18 points, 3 rebounds, an assist and 2 steals while RJ Masbang fired 11 and Labagala had 10.
