Richie Hawtin - DE9 | Closer To The Edit (2001, full‐length)

- After recording, sampling, cutting, and splicing over 100 tracks down to their most basic components, I ended up with a collection of over 300 loops, ranging in length from 1 note to 4 bars. I then started to recreate and reinterpret each track, putting the pieces back together as if an audio jigsaw puzzle- using effects and edits in between each piece. This 53 minute piece, consisting of over 70 tracks and 31 ID points, represents what those loops became, and how their interactions created something that had not existed before. Richie Hawtin

23 years later and this still one of the best minimal techno mixes ever made.
The best i think..
almost 20 years later and i still consider this the best mix I have ever listened. There is no doubt. The amount of work he put in this 53 minutes mix is unreal.
Me too
Indeed ✨
Muy cierto, pienso exactamente igual... 20 años después y es el mejor set que jamas he escuchado
Have u heard his recent album , Close Combined?
It’s a MASTERPIECE! Also listen to the set in Wellington New Zealand , the 121 festival 👍
It is still a reference for me
Best work of Richie Hawtin ever, a masterpiece, everyone who likes electronic music should listen this!
Exactly 🙏
100%
I dont mean to be off topic but does anyone know of a method to log back into an Instagram account?
I was dumb forgot the password. I appreciate any help you can give me.
soz im 70
Amen to that. So good even now. Always will be.
I preferred it when the future sounded like this.
for real
Jesus christ, this hits home so hard for me!
The future ain't what it used to be.
@@thorinteague989 There's something to be said about the fact that this was released on 9/11.
NEVER GETS OLD!
i miss the old richie hawtin :(
I remember a friend gave this album to me in 2003 and said: "You must listen it all and you will see a movie!"
It's from my favorite ones since then
and now is your turn to do the same with one of your current friends ! i dare you
Me to remember like this. Music at the world!
Maybe one of the best mix ever, We miss that Richie !!!!!!
the best ...
I still think, to this day, this was the best Richie ever produced. Flawless.
I remember seeing Richie Hawtin headline at DEMF in either 2004 or 2005 (it was his first show in the US in years).. I'll never forget how beautiful that night was..
This is by far the best piece of sound artistry I’ve ever heard…. Richie is a pure genius when comes to sound architecture in dance music!!!!
Genuis.
Possibly the most beautiful minute in the history of techno.
There are no words .. one of the most sublime mixes ever thx to the plastik
Fuck man. I forgot how good this was
melodic, hypnotizing, some parts are so emotional, others are just hypnotic and full focusing - he collected all the best bits and put them together in something that never exited before. respect to richie and love his old works plastikman 1990-2010...
Thank you r/OldElectronicMusic subreddit for bringing me here!💚
47:02 is so unbelievably good that it bewilders me. like holy shit the track LFO drive feels like it was created for this one specific moment in time. phenomenal
This is so similar to Re-moved by Guido Schneider.
One of the best mixes of everternity. Influential for me, for sure. 🙏🏼
Timeless grooves, the good old days of minimal techno
Magical. Can't believe audiences was ready for it in 2001...
I was there and I was ready
We weren't
This Work, changed my life since 2001!
Best Mix or Album or Project..ever!
It‘s a kind of everything!
De9 Transitions a Masterpiece too!
You can’t beat this mix!!!! The music was ahead of its time and so was the way Richie was using the technology!!!!!
20 years later still SUPER RELEVANT!
This mix is so good, the detailing and loop structure used in this mix is so beautiful, gives a futuristic sheen to the mix whenever you listen, guaranteed to still be played in the year 2101, it's so good.
I don't miss the 'old Richie Hawtin' or Plastikman for that matter... Richie is a person... a wonderful person, and an artist who immerses himself in anything that he chooses to do. These experiences change him as a person, he grows and so does his art... it's unavoidable. When i see/hear his work i see someone's journey... and his work travels me back and forth in time... through my own journey... and this is so special... and would have never been possible with sheet one or de9 in isolation...
i loved this mix back in the day...was young AF...dayum
U”re young in ur heart forever !
I remember this coming out quite vividly. We'd been following Richie closely and the change seemed extremely sudden to me; the few times we saw him in '99 & '00 he was still in the Minus Orange mode: slamming Techno, Disco/Electro/EBM references galore (Join in the Chant! You Spin Me Right Round). Techno was becoming Pretty boring (speeding up, everybody converging to the same production techniques).
None of the tracks he plays here were particularly new, it's just that most people simply weren't paying attention.
And when this came out it was an absolute bomb and the whole entire scene followed. Now everyone was playing minimal and the guys Richie played on DE9 were suddenly stars. I know that's a bit reductive, but that's how I experienced it.
Problem was, everybody followed and instead of experimenting how you could create great music with minimalistic techniques, producers went: 'what must I do to sound like Richie' and boom, Minimal had turned into a convention and everything was boring again.
And now we're in 2023 and we're seeing both faster techno ánd minimal making a come back. Let's wait until somebody thinks of something new again, and we'll be in for another great ride.
"To be in England in the summertime with my love; close to the edge-"
A tribute to the "inventors" of sampling.
the best minimal set ever made in life, every electronic lover should listen to it, work of art
This, Decks FX and 909 and Mixmag Live are sublime, a DJ completely at the top of his game. I agree that "DE9: Transitions" was boring, not a patch on this. Hawtin is Jekyll and Hyde in many ways, he has the capacity to be mind-blowing (he's in that mode here) or dull beyond grief, but when he's on form he's truly special.
The greatest Album ever. This was the real Hawtin !!
Best track ever got to be spastik
Sheet One might be his best album. That album changed my life. Thank you Richie
Thanks for uploading this Gem.
Sunday morning,
I type in Richie Hawtin,
and i click.
And this plays.
Fantastic.
Hi tech,
High.
Tek.
Sending electronic music to my ears.
So solid state,
digital.
Techno..................
Just discovered this masterpiece in 2020 👌
How great is that, I love that you have just heard and loved this I had two copies on vinyl to be able to mix bits 😍
In 2021 to..))
Lucky you
I would pay for didn´t know it, and discover again.
My favourite piece of techno music of all time.
some of this tracks bring so many memories to
me ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
If you like minimalist's techno, it does not get better than this.
About 21 years ago I randomly got this album from the library in Ghent. Still feels like yesterday. There's something very special about this album. It's like being the Bach of electronic music. Ricardo villalobos is also one of these artist that something gives me this feeling.
Word! Seen them do a back to back set at T in the park years ago! Ricardo drank a whole bottle of vodka 😂 legends
Ricardo not worthy of shining Richie’s boots!
Absolute Masterpiece
went on a nostalgic hawtin rabbit hole tonight - i see the same comments on every video. even back in the 90s people were complaining hawtin was never going to come close to plastikman again. lets all be honest here, not many rocks a show like hawtin, and not many ever will. outside of plastikman i've always thought his production was pretty weak... but his live performances are second to none. this music just doesn't make sense unless its being played in a proper environment.
anyone in electronic music should consider this piece as masterpiece and learn from it
Yes i do.
For me it’s the most relaxing cd of Richie !
My most listened to mix ever... hands down one the best pieces of electronic music.
Michael Mentessi same
I bought this Album on compact disc back in the days. Still enjoying the shit out of it
Simon Arthofer I still have the CD. I WAS OBSESSED
the best minimal-loop album..
I miss old hawtin, but he's definetly still rocking it... got some RIGHT bangers up his sleeve
one of the greatest mix ever:) nice to listen it once upon the time
minimal before it's bubblegum hype
Boris brej
If I remember correctly mnml and its quirky brother microhouse allready were alive and kicking scenes in 2001. But then again I was really fucked up and some even more fucked up bois and girls were still celebrating to stuff like schranz ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Rob Hood before Hawtin, WAY before
@@Organise_Space do you know any other tracks like these?
@@7k7yub7 Nice insight. I was literally 6yo when I first got to hear this thanks to my father, and by that time this kind of music just made me going anxious O.O Now I'm a buff.
Absolutely amazing, digital mix but however a lot of work. One of the best mixes of all time ⏲️ 🙌
my favourite mix of all time. cold cuts journey by dj, liam howletts dirt chamber session, dj qberts camel in a bobsled, dj shadow and cut chemists brain freeze.... THIS is the top of the lot!!!
What a stunning piece of deep minimal electronic music that's all you can say about this!!!
I listen to this and the world feels significantly richer as a result. This is music that enlightens rather than anesthetizes.
soo deep and clean ...
Raw and minimal, it does what it has to do, it makes you dance.
Great minimal! Thank you Mr. Hawtin!
I can't even imagine listen to it at a party, this would be so fuckin' good man!!!!
You'd clear the party pretty quickly unless everyone was a music snob like us.
I dunno, I saw him at The End in London when he was touring this, playing a lot of tunes from this set plus more in a similar style (and some Luke Slater), and it was absolutely brilliant. Some very serious dancing. I almost got thrown out for doing a handstand near a bouncer.
@@moealagha i mean sure it's relatively unknown at 400k views, but this isn't weird music. it's just a pretty good minimal mix.
and minimal is one of the most popular edm genres.
so IMO noone would clear the room if they heard this
Love this album, I lost my original copy and was so upset so looking forward to this...
Me too I bought 2-3 yet
Being sat down in front of the visual with this and listening (as in Listening) to this, taught me how to hear techno. Thank you!
Let it never end ! Class !
i listened to so much electronic music in the past 15 years but nothing compares to this. this is perfection, there is not one note to add or remove. for sure a masterpiece.
Much more akin to Basic Channel and Robert Hood, in the days when his Dex FX & 909 sets were slaughtering dancefloors, and Minus furthered that as the antithesis to +8, Richie has always been ahead of the curve
This mix is still inspiring to this day.
If you manage to own the original full Concept 1 LP on wax as well.... fair play.
I do :) Classic
If you mean the double lp with 120 loops, got them (2 pcs so i can intermix them all)
Wow. Every now and then the YT algorithm delivers. Wonderful!
In the land of the blind the one eyed man is king...... apparently.
Strange days for sure.
PEACE.
High quality! Very good times!
Totally agree......I love all the mixes you mention (and more) and this owns the number one slot for me. Spent many a session grooving late into the night/morning where this makes a 'polpular' appearance at some point!
True, Funky, Minimal. God Bless.
It's one of those go-to "albums"
Minimal but progressive, I bought two copies of the vinyl for mixing back in the day 👌❤️😘
menuda sesion! 11 años despues la escucho y todavia me gusta...esto no lo hace cualquiera! ya estaba cambiando el estilo de musica y todavia no sabiamos que nos deparaba..muy bueno!
Absolutely still a masterpiece that will never ever age, and it's a crime to start listening and interrupting it for any reason before it ends.
At second place, shifting a decade forward and into tech-house, another album I keep listening to is Marco Carola - Play It Loud (2011).
I wonder if somebody could suggest another masterpiece of work to add in the 3th place (or higher ;) on the podium, it will be highly appreciated.
(No livesets / single track)
A different genre but with the same faith the listener will get it: Renegade Continuum 2, by DJ Dara, disc 1 (iirc, the one that uses the "ultra" sample 🤷😅)
@@justinkennedy3004 During my 20+ years on dancefloors, I repent a little I never spent time in the Drum'n'Bass floors - this genre got definitely a larger spectrum of effects and variables to surprise, I was never able to "sync" my body / soul needs with it (for dancing)
I've found finally searching on my external drive another "Masterpiece" I could not find anymore, since all tracks and untitled ;) But I think it would be a nice add to the list of masterpieces:
Algorithm - The Forcelab Edition : Composure (2002)
@@Spiddo3 thanks! I'll give it a listen. EdM in the 90's was so much more futuristic and optimistic than today. I miss it deeply.
I used to get anxiety with dnb u til I was on maybe the strongest acid I would ever come across and someone took off Crystal Method and put on Dieselboy. I was so scared I was going to have a bad trip but I was too messed up to stop it from playing. 😂 Ended up being the night I had a huge breakthrough and dnb is my favorite over all.
Thanks again for the album tip!
thank you for uploading this! =) this is what i actually need.
Beautiful!!♥♡♥♡
Dank you very much for posting this up!
Absolutely legendary!!!
Discount...babe......discount..babe.... DISCOUNT.... DISCOUNT DISCOUNT - Yepperrrrrr :)
This album is sick, period. Still, his masterpiece is "Closer".
I love the "new" Plastikman (Richie Hawtin 2003).
Ten years ago... :)
really appreciate the upload!
Quel dieu, un seul live minimal qui apprend à tous, bravo !!!!! Général hatwin
Escuchando en vísperas de navidad 2019.
legendary mix!!!!
That's the one thing rich has over the all other dj/producers, he is always trying something new and loves using cutting edge new technology. i think he gets it from his father the rocket scientist.
One of my favorite tapes that played in my first car back in 2001
The best set of history
Best mix ever
The guy is a genius! amazing what he can do.
Masterpiece
Richie ist ein wahrer Meister ! Einer der letzten wirklichen Dj`s
This was one of the main reasons, why richie was switching from vinyl to digital.
And i have totaly no problems whit it.
love the locked grooves. X
29:41 jesus christ almighty that sound is amazing, dawwo. dawwo. dawwo. dawwo
The best man!!!
Never knew about the splicing amount method, really cool and must of been a great mission. Reading the "closer to the edit" article on it now in a 2001 Future Music Magazine. Fascinating stuff and an ingenious way of pioneering a new way of DJing on a whole new performance level back then.
I did this with a Drum n Bass mix around 2002 called Endgame. I called it a reconstruction; breaking each track down into its constituent loops and parts, and then almost reconstructing each track into a different piece and then mixing it all together. I had about 600 loops for a 72 minute mix. It was so much fun.
DiatomTheSuperCell soundscool
Un vrai chef-d’oeuvre. !!!
26,26m,optical way,Rino Cerrone, just brilliant.remixes from The Advent and Misstress Barbara
Incredible.
Thanks to the uploader!
He's the master in the sound of minmal!!!
beautiful
wow!! espectaculaaar... 💣👏👏💙
He was way ahead of his time.
& now the worthless millennials have the best sound systems capable of much greater variety and tall they can produce these days is lame dub-step gangster rap and repetitive xylophone and voice synths.

A real pioneer
I miss this !! Now Richie is more interested in how many wires he can hook up to his laptop !
